A MONOKU -- Response to One Single Impression Prompt of 2-08-09

It was monarch "overwintering" season* here in sunny California a few weeks back, so this is a current monoku. I spotted this gorgeous bush at the beach overlook. It made my entire day.

A monoku (sometimes written mono-ku) is a one-line haiku, usually having less than 17 syllables, but still containing two distinct parts. The fun is if you can somehow make a word (often where the change between parts occurs) create an ambiguity in how it or the line is to be read. In this one, for instance, there's a vague sense that maybe the writer also intends: "the bush burns sunlight," in addition to the intended picture of sunlight through moving monarch wings making it look like the bush is burning. I'm not sure if this ambiguity is a requirement of the form, or just something to be worked in should a monoku clearly suggest it (the latter has been my approach). I'm looking forward to learning more about this fairly new haiku form as it develops.

BEAUTIFUL

I feel beautiful
beauty filled

This week’s prompt at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION is “faces.” The above poem was the direct result of sitting on a bench by a garden after dinner, as fellow residents walked to/from dinner. I was wearing a long pale green skirt with a slightly darker green blouse. And when someone would comment on how nice that combination looked I’d joke “I feel like I should be in a terra cotta pot.” Each passerby had a radiant smile to my hello, and many stopped to chat, some even sat down for awhile to schmooze. It was one of those rare and incredible times in which I felt that one-ness with everyone and everything, my personal "I" muted within connectedness.

A DREAM BASED HAIBUN: Response to One Single Impression Prompt of 7/19/08

THE HOOK UP
(a dream haibun)

I have cut my hair severely short and bleached it white blonde. I'm wearing bright red lip stick, high heels, a tight skirt, and a black and white striped blouse.

the handsome young man
clearly likes how I look
we hook up

Enjoying feeling so magnetic, I nevertheless explain that I completely change my look every few days. He is not deterred.

too good to be true
I worry my next overhaul
will turn him off

He takes me to a large dark and private back room of a classy restaurant. We have it to ourselves. We inch toward each other in the booth.

The prompt for this week at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION is “Rest.” The dream on which the above haibun is based is in large part about the yearning to come to rest with certain fears. So much so, that at the end I cry with relief, though that was a surprise within the dream and is probably also to any reader of this haibun. Given the set-up one would – as I did during the dream – expect a more specifically, um, shall I say, romantic ending. :-)

A MYTH/MOVIE/DREAM

Night after night he has summoned her
to his dark forest kingdom,
to quake before the cold throne
of his love.

Silent and brooding, he dips
his horned head in a massive
swoop of entreaty.

One taloned hand grips a stone arm
of his throne, the other trembles
vaguely toward her.

The pale wraith of her soul
flutters before him.

Why do you call me here, she cries,
night after night, stealing my soul
from the sleeping flesh of my body.
You know I will never love you.

Her small face waivers faintly
alabaster beneath the stars.

Yes, this I know, this I know.
He shakes his head sadly
and boulders leagues away tumble.
He shifts his goat thighs, and mice
and owls and lions flee for cover.

Yes, this I know. I have called you
one last time ... to set you free.

She burns briefly brighter, a pale
pink rose, under a sere moonwind.

He spreads his black wings, utterly
blocking stars, moon and sky
from her sight.

Then folds them around himself again
with a sound like a universe
of crumpling leaves.

You are free. And I ask only one thing
of you. He reaches toward her again,

There in its center glows a small pearl,

The prompt this week at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION is “Myth.” The above poem is based on a dream I had after watching a fantasy movie sequence on T.V. about the myth-like character Calibos in "Clash of the Titans." I wrote it in 1986. It came to mind when I read the prompt for this week, inspiring me to finally do the heavy revision I always knew it needed. So I am more than usually grateful for the prompts ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION offers. TAIGA: Response to One Single Impression Prompt of 6/29/08

The prompt this week at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION is “Doorway.” The above taiga (illustrated tanka) is The Empress (III) from my work-in-progress, The Taiga Tarot. In Tarot the cards are sometimes corresponded to letters from the Hebrew alphabet. The usual letter associated with The Empress is “Daleth,” which in noun form means “door.” I’ve always found that highly appropriate for the archetypal mother card, as our mother is our doorway into this life. I also tend to see The Great Goddess in The Empress, so “doorway" is certainly appropriate in this respect, too. (Please note that the information below the card design above speaks to the dream it was inspired by, and that the taiga I am designing for the Taiga Tarot are rather non-traditional.)

The prompt at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION this week is “transience or permanence.” The four haiku of mine above all reflect the former, and my sense that – as one meaning for the Two of Disks in The Tarot says – the only stability is change. As this is Father's Day, I also wanted to share a very old dream-based poem of mine about my father. In terms of today's theme of "transience," what is more transient than a night dream? The particular dream this poem comes from was the beginning of the healing of my internal relationship with my father some time after he died, and I am grateful to be able to offer it here in loving memory of him:

THE DREAM

She swirls with her father
above a winter sea.
A welcome absence rests between them.
His smile sad and open to the starlight.
His ghostly fingers barely brush
her back, her hands, as they glide
together through the silence.
Following her lead at last,
he asks no more of her than this,
this one sweet dance,
this accident
of grace.

The prompt for this week at ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION is "reflecting." Each of the moments I reflect on in the above haiku prompted (and still prompts) a sense of gratitude in me. And since today is the Memorial Day celebration, I offer them in grateful memory of all who served and are serving.

DREAM HAIGA: Response to One Single Impression Prompt of 5/18/08

P.S. Several hours after making the above post: I went to the library on the grounds of the retirement community I live in, hoping to find poetry that is outside my usual "poetry comfort zone." The first book I picked up is one of English and American Sonnets (sonnets are waaaaay outside my comfort zone :-D). When I opened it, I felt compelled to read this first sonnet that caught my eye, by Archibald Lampman:

THE LARGEST LIFE

Nay, never once to feel we are alone,
While the great human heart around us lies:
To make the smile on other lips our own,
To live upon the light in others' eyes:
To breathe without a doubt the limpid air
Of that most perfect love that knows no pain:
To say -- I love you -- only, and not care
Whether the love come back to us again,
Divinest self-forgetfulness, at first
A task, then a tonic, then a need;
To greet with open hands the best and worst,
And only for another's wound to bleed:
This is to see the beauty that God meant,
Wrapped round with life, ineffably content.

This sonnet addresses the query my unconscious mind was making in the dream/ku above. Even also using, ultimately, an image of blood. Synchronicity always amazes me, no matter how often it graces my life.

Every once in a while a member of the scifaiku writing list I participate in will suggest we "morph" a haiku by a haiku Master into a scifaiku. So first is the haiku, then my scifaiku "morph":

The scene of this haiku is one of the first things I savor each time I walk out of my building into the courtyard. Sometimes it's in bright sunlight, sometimes in shadow, but it always catches my appreciative eye. The delightful woman who has the studio next to mine tends this particular beautiful garden of the many gorgeous gardens on the grounds. After many years of careful planting and tending, she can no longer do the work herself as she's too physically frail, but she does supervise the work lovingly.

May 4, 2008: At the request of Storyteller (see comments) I'm posting a photo that is somewhat similar to the succulent plant referenced in my above haiku. Though the one in the garden here is more star- than roseatte-like, and has longer "stems."



I could probably have found an image of the succulent in the garden planter here, but I don't know the exact name, so had to search gazillions of google results for "succulents" to find even this similar one. :-)

What gave me a surprised giggle was I had originally thought to post a lengthy, very funny prose piece by someone else today, when I recalled that the new prompt for OSI would be up by now. So laughter was in the air!

BTW, the words on the image above are a scifaiku, a haiku-like form with scifi/fantasy themes. The image is a figurine of Medusa from the old film "Clash of the Titans." And I'd like to add that I have had a great fondness for Medusa from childhood, learning many years later that in her most ancient form She was an earth Goddess, so I am having fun with Her from a place of great affection.

Now that I'm living in southern California (I moved from New York city in February), the difference between winter and spring is not as obvious. But the weather is getting warmer overall and the sunlight a bit stronger. In fact, just becoming more lovely. :-) (The haiku on this haiga is a slightly revised version of an older one of mine.)

Daffodils have special meaning to me as they were one of my mother's favorite flowers. So that "spring in her step" was supported by more than just spring beauty.
