ROAD TO A VIEW (photo) & ON THE EDGE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON THE EDGE

nearly tripping ass-over-tea-kettle on it:
no longer focusing intensely on the past
or accessing some other tangle of dendrites
in what passes for a brain but staring down
at hurting feet as they carry on, trying to
figure out what, if anything, can be done
for them: an awareness of the sidewalk
ahead rolling out from under aching feet,
when spirit suddenly skips ahead
of the plodding, down the ribbon
of cement like Dorothy on the yellow
brick road, utterly delighted by this
brush with what's always here,
if rarely recognized in all the hue
and cry: the innocent edge of tomorrow

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

ROSE FROM THE SEA (photo) & THE CHOICE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE CHOICE

which of these two new
non-representational
photomorphs of mine
do I want to hang in that blank
space on my freshly painted wall

neither may be of
anything actually in existence
but each resonates
at a deep level hooking my
emotions and memories

so, the black and white
one with lots of charcoal grey?
that hurts my heart
putting me in mind of the one
who stalks and bedevils me?

or the one in dark
aqua shades that verge on black?
prompting memories
of the ocean out of which
the one who stalks me arose?

the one I can't shake?
or the other, its monumental source?
surprising myself
I take on the risk of not knowing what
will rise this time and choose the ocean

RIDING THE SUNSET (photo) & THE COWBOY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE COWBOY

"To the rodeo!"
my new cowboy date grumps
and I sigh heavily,
"Can't I even ask a question
seeking clarity?" I think

I rush home to dress
(yeah, even for a rodeo
there's a preferred style
of outfitting one's self) only
to find all my lighting's dead

well, that just frosts it
as far as I'm concerned:
dressing, an exercise
in reading Braille? I don't think
so, and especially not in a rush

I decide not to go
on this rodeo date; I'm
not that desperate
for entertainment, not even the kind
my cowboy companion might offer

though an old country
western song says "Don't call him
a cowboy 'til you
see him ride," sometimes even
seeing isn't necessarily believing

I'd much rather determine his riding skills
here in my darkened apartment anyway

sensitive touch can be applied
to much more than reading Braille

THE JONESING BRAIN (photo) & DARK ANGEL (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

DARK ANGEL

who tarred and feathered you
and flung you at my back
as I finally gave up on on you
and walked away,
and what crime did I commit
to suffer you like this,
a dark angel stuck to my back,
shadowing me from head to toe,
bringing tears of frustration
each time I try to shake you
and an agony of loneliness
even as your constant phantom
writhes on my shoulders,
your stygian heat
and crumpled wings
plastered firmly to me,
like a curse for ever having
yearned for you at all

OPENING TO THE NIGHT (photomorph) & HE ESCORTS ME (dream narrative) by Roswila

HE ESCORTS ME

he escorts me politely but firmly
through the large basement to a low
table he's using to give massages,
explaining very briefly as we walk
that he's just taken a course and wants
to do some hands on work on me

I'm very surprised as he usually keeps
a definite distance between us, both
metaphorically and literally speaking

he doesn't say it, but I also get the strong
impression he thinks I'm in great need
of being massaged, which I am, my life's
been more stressed out on every level
than it's ever been, so much so I'm more
than a bit surprised he would even feel
like approaching my bristling tension

of course, the thought that he's going to
touch me (my current unrequited crush!)
starts my body warming and softening
before I even lie down on my stomach

his hands on my lower back are, as I'd
always imagined they would be, heavenly

however, he doesn't massage, he simply
briefly holds both hands over the lower
left of my back, and then only his right
one on the lower right, where he leaves
his large hand, still and warm, for what
feels like a long time, but may be only
a couple of minutes

when he indicates (non-verbally,
as he often communicates) that our time
is over, I get up and go over to his desk
that's littered with brochures and notes,
hoping to find out what type of massage
he's just given me

he follows and feels as distant from me
as ever, and though I hesitate to even
ask, I do so anyway: what type of hands
on work was that?

I can immediately tell he doesn't want
to answer, his usual low tolerance for
questions apparent in his body posture
and eye shift

I don't press for an answer (I learned
a long time ago not to do so), thank
him instead and walk away,
wondering why he offered me
the massage to begin with

ON A SPIN (photo) & IN ANISQOYO PARK (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IN ANISQOYO PARK

ah, the blesséd silence!
but, no, not complete, for in
the distance, as if questioning
my hobbling passage through
these lilting shadows, an owl's
"who-WHO-who? who-WHO-who?"
and to my utter delight the answer
rises in me like the next line
to a soft song the tires
of my walker sing as they spin:
" I don't know ... I don't know ...
I really ... just ... don't ... know!"

ON THE WAY TO MORPH (photomorph) & THE LYING DREAM (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE LYING DREAM

why am I telling this woman
I'm becoming surprisingly
comfortable with
to trust the stories
her memories tell her?

it's all a big game and I know it!
(take a memory out of the closet
and you can be sure it's not
the one you originally hung there,
just taking it down has messed
with it in some way)

but, damn it, I'm so tired of paying
the price of loneliness for being
a truthsayer (or biting my poor
tongue to keep from speaking)

why can't I, for once, tell a few
sweet little lies that comfort
someone and, more to the point
of this lying dream, myself
