LOOKING IN ON THE DREAM (photomorph) & LOPSIDED LOPING (on a dream) by Roswila

LOPSIDED LOPING

the last safe homes left in the debris of this destroyed
world of cities: two old three-story wood-frame houses,
on opposite sides of the single surviving city block,
connected by over-lapping, large back yards; in both
houses reside extended families -- created by mixes of
genes and chosen affiliations -- two distinct groups
that interact only on the blended playing field of their
back yards; as I watch the dream unfurl, a small dark
haired boy climbs off the back porch of the home
on the left, limping and then running rapidly if
lopsidedly across the wide yards toward the tumble
down porch of the other house; I somehow know
this sprint of his is the start of a running game
he's played many times before -- with or without
the participation of family or neighbors --
even as I wonder about the essential wound
that must underlie this back and forth,
lopsided loping

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

RIDING THE WINDS (photomorph) & "she hooks up as ..." (dreamku) by Roswila

she hooks up as
the butt end of a centaur
ancient masquerade

[dreamku (simply put, a haiku on a dream) from July of 2006. I started writing this morning about how difficult it is to stay in touch with gratitude, but it went nowhere viable. (Doesn't usually when I'm trying to force a thought, rather than follow a feeling.) So I turned to my extensive archives for something to re-post, starting my search at the very beginning years of this blog. Well, this one above was maybe the third or fourth I stumbled across and did I get a good laugh! A very wry one, but a laugh nevertheless. Photomorph "Riding the Winds" (9-28-18 001v14) by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

For more in-depth exploration of the dreamku forms specifically and one post in which I also address my photo choices:

-- very brief comparison of dreamku and haiku: DREAMKU ARE NOT HAIKU

-- a brief post about both dreamku and my photos THE AREN'TS OF DREAMKU & ACCOMPANYING DIGITAL PHOTOS.

-- detailed three-part post about dreamku: "A DREAMKU PRIMER: Writing Haiku-Like Poems About Your Night Dreams": PART ONE: Introduction & Writing Dreamku as Dream Work; PART TWO: Elements of the Haiku Form Used in Dreamku; and PART THREE: How to Write Dreamku (the second and third parts have some overlap).

-- a short up-dating post about the three-part "A DREAMKU PRIMER" -- Important Up-date to A DREAMKU PRIMER....".

BLOWN AWAY (photomorph) & A MATTER OF TIMING (a dream) by Roswila

A QUESTION OF TIMING

another repeating dream image:
hurrying to make it back in time
to avoid being shot by that man --
yeah, seemed silly even in
the dream, one would think
one would run away from and
not toward the gunman,
especially not again and again

then comes a change to the repeat
scenario: I and my usual vague
companion are running late; we're in
a bit of a panic as we might not
make it back to the scene of the
threatened shooting in time
to prevent it this time

and we don't; as we arrive it's clear
from the commotion we're way too
late, and then we hear the even worse
news: the shooter's taken down
twenty people instead of his initial
and repeated threat to shoot just two --
myself and my rather already
ghost-like companion

as I look up and down this all too
ordinary suburban street for the shooter
my panic rises, but again, not as one might
think to avoid being added to that deadly
toll, but in a gut wrenching concern for
the shooter himself

the tentative feeling of freedom from the
repeated threat that begins to fill my
limbs turns quickly leaden: could
my companion and I have prevented this
horrific end simply by arriving on time?

[on a dream of 12-3-18. Yep, talk about a sense of over-responsibility. There are also levels of anger and fear of it (both my own anger and that of others, especially men's). I was curious about the esoteric meaning of the number 20. I associated it to The Judgment card in the Tarot, which bears that number. But somehow I didn't resonate much with that card with respect to this dream (BTW, one of its flag words is "rebirth"). So I Googled and what jumped out at me was that 20 is primarily concerned with relationships. Lots to chew over there and in the rest of this disturbing dream. I hasten to add that I've also had the thought that it may not be as dark as it appears to be. BTW, in the beginning of the dream writing I mention "another repeating dream image" -- that's something that's been happening on and off for a while now. I.e., I keep going back to and over something I've just dreamed. Photomorph "Blown Away" (5-13-18 034v5) by Roswila]

BYTES THE RUST (photomorph) & DEFINITIONS (non-dream tanka pair) by Roswila

DEFINITIONS

by definition
a pun has to be bad to be any good,
follow that logic
and her life -- being such a bad pun
on that word -- should be a great one

but it's also said
that self-pity stinks and there's a smell
to most of her thoughts
these days that might prompt a wiser
woman to brush them off as so much dust
