DANCING WITH THE SUN (photomorph) & TRAVELING CIRCUS

TRAVELING CIRCUS

the small traveling family surprises us
when they agree to join the act my mate
and I take on the road regularly

they bring a great deal to our small show,
especially their two energetic teens,
who climb and dangle with skillful abandon

my mate and I celebrate with the family
when a baby boy's born to them,
a tow-headed dynamo who grows rapidly
and runs around within days of birth,
his large head easy to spot even at a distance

then as suddenly as they'd joined us
the family's flown, leaving their new babe
behind like an egg in some other bird's nest

I know I can't give this bundle of growing
delight over to the so-called life
that Social Services would afford him

yet dare I risk keeping him myself
and becoming ever more attached,
when it's likely that one day
the family will return to claim him,
all the hard, moment to moment work
of raising him done

and oops! there he goes as infants do
haring off after something only he
can see, galumphing down the sidewalk

I hurry after the beacon of his blonde
head as it bobs in the afternoon sunlight

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

RED RAMPANT (photomorph) & ON BEING FRAMED (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON BEING FRAMED

each Knight -- male
and female alike -- stands
awkwardly posed in a thick
brown wooden frame, a living
breathing portrait

each also wears bright red
chain mail, contrasting sharply
to his or her unhelmeted head
of wild white hair

the picture frames along the
wall begin to look more
like a row of dog houses,
each Knight peering perplexed
out of its own doorway,
a mutt muffled by an intricate red
sweater crocheted by an owner

puzzling over these hung up Knights
the observer wonders
how she herself is framed

STAVING OFF THE NIGHT (photo) & BRING IT ON (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BRING IT ON

yes, there's a chance
there's always a chance
that liveliness will out again,
not even the past's immutable,
hardened like footprints in concrete

yet the dream pushes the point
that he couldn't see, much less respect
boundaries, and that my search for a box
big enough in which to stash away
the memory of his transgressions
was eminently successful,
as if choosing a coffin

so then, the dream quizzes,
what's this awful blankness been about?
shouldn't there be at least
an abiding sense of relief,
even a certain happiness?

sigh, I guess it's better late than never
to get that one cannot compartmentalize
one's mind except at a great loss
that buries one whole

more simply put
box living away
lose liveliness,
so

bring on the mud and the muck
maybe someday a lotus will grow

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-30-14. This poem is a bit muddy, too, I'm afraid. I've been working on it steadily since I had its source dream two days ago. I'd thought to post a non-dream haiku or tanka instead. That maybe another day's work on this one would help me clarify it. But something urges me to put it up today. So here it is, in all its murkiness. An interesting way to start the New Year. BTW, it's not murky to me, the dreamer. It's just that I don't think I've made it clear enough for some other reader. And any way I've tried to further clarify requires too much explaining and winds up sounding preachy, which I don't like. Photo "Staving Off the Night" (12-2-14 011v6) by Roswila]

DOWNSTREAMING (photomorph) & "the soft slosh-sloshing..." (non-dream tanka pair) by Roswila

the soft slosh-sloshing
of a lazy swimmer,
light dappling the pool,
a New Year's resolution:
to remember gratitude

it's been said that what
one does this day, one does
through the coming year
may it be so: drafting tanka
by the pool in warm sunlight

BOILING OVER (photomorph) & THIRSTY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THIRSTY

she goes to sleep in a welter of anger
of course she knows it's only an overwrought
cauldron filled with hurt, but this awareness
has never made any difference,
the anger just cooks on,
blistering her dreams as it had the day ...

this man's judgment, that woman's betrayal,
a parade of abandonments,
her own damning actions

so much burning ire makes her thirsty
she fills a tall glass with the last of the milk
in the refrigerator, but no, the boy
will have none in the morning
to go with his breakfast

she pours back all but a couple of swallows
surprised to be able to milk any kindness
at all from this burned out husk

DANCING ISLES (photomorph) & STILLER WATER (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

STILLER WATER

stiller water out
beyond the heavily
breaking waves
beckons her

she lifts the surfboard
holding it at an angle
trying to get past        get past
slip over and through
what is already broken

to wait in the shimmering
stillness of the possible
for a wide curl
to ride artfully
down

UNRAVELING (photomorph) & AFTER ALL THIS TIME (dream narrative) by Roswila

AFTER ALL THIS TIME

as I arrive to visit her after all this time
her ex-husband shoves by me in a rush
to leave for some appointment

before she and I even exchange opening
pleasantries, she explains that they've
just remarried and are already fighting
just the way they used to, endlessly

she looks drawn and rather ill as she
goes on to tell me the back story
for a T.V. show that's on right now,
"Bringing you on board," she says,
"so you'll not mind waiting till it's over
to reconnect with each other..."

humanity has emigrated
to a far distant planet, leaving behind
on the ravaged, depleted Earth
those pitiful few people who refused
to relocate out of sentiment or fear

now, unknown numbers of generations
later, the star travelers return
to visit the earth of their almost
totally forgotten origins

they stand stunned on the lush green
and wildly overgrown landscape,
attempting to communicate
with Neanderthals, the only human
forms to be found on this globe ...

my friend then adds in a tone
that brooks no disbelief:

"It seems when the pressures
and conditions producing
evolution are gone long enough,
ancient genetics will out ...
things will always revert to type."

[narrative on a dream of 12-27-14. Yes, there's some cynicism and some fear in this dream. But it's more about acknowledging how dreadfully hard it is to make deep changes that last, either societal or personal. Given how embedded we all are in much wider and deeper circumstances. A subsequent dream about my deceased younger brother (he died just a year ago) addressed this latter issue with respect to us both. Ultimately, the way I understand them, both dreams urge a more encompassing compassion. Photomorph "Unraveling" (5-6-10 10005v5b) by Roswila]
