LONG STRANGE TRIP

the aliens’ eyes
shine a gelid pale gold
their limbs, pseudopods

why did my family
trick me onto this spaceship
with cavernous halls
and why this email from Mother
that there’s nothing wrong at all


[re-posting of a dreamku and tanka on a dream of 7-11-11. Comment excerpted from the previous posting: ... "A line from a song -- 'Lately it occurs to me: What a long, strange trip it’s been' came up on recalling this little dream. (The song is “Truckin’” by the Grateful Dead.) So that’s embedded in the title and may actually be a big part of the point of the dream." What can I say? That title still pretty much says it all, these almost 4 years later. Especially after the dream I had last night. Don't feel like writing about it, but I will at least say my woman friend and I stood up to the situation, rescuing another woman who was being attacked by a man. But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. MAYBE THIS IS ENOUGH

"Only make believe...
others find peace of mind
in pretending..." *

to her surprise, though,
the scene that opens out of
this old show tune's
not on skirting around romance
but recalling how she mothered

to be more exact
a re-doing of her largely
failed mothering, one
of the young boys in question
now in her care again briefly

she's found them a room
to stay in and softly asks him
about his Mom's care,
did she give him vitamins,
and other such details

only now does his
little face pucker and tears
begin to well
she picks him up and holds him
against her own aching heart

for she mourns Mom, too,
and maybe this is enough,
maybe it's healing
to touch hearts in the long ago,
back past the void of his own death

if not, it's still been a bright bittersweet moment,
this making believe that one can re-do the past

THE PAINTING-PHOTO-COLLAGE

assiduously,
yes, that's the word to describe
the way she's working,
her painting-photo-collage
having hooked her like a fish

well, more like a whale
but that's beside any point
to all this fussing
then the title comes to her:
Life As A Hardboiled Egg

she flips off a laugh
and continues moving things
around in the frame
her art isn't finished, no where
near fully cooked, if you will

as she lift corners
and flaps she sees older layers
she'd plumb forgotten
shapes and shadows suggesting
the past and some a future

an unknown future
that she hopes isn't as hot as
the bed she wakes in
time to get up and remove
the blanket or turn off the heat

back to bed and dreams
in which this art's retitled
More Global Warming --
seems there's no escaping
the world, not even in sleep

even here harsh portents boil up
from beneath the shifting fragments

SEEN AND UNSEEN

the eyes neither fully see nor rest
as they sample the intoxicating world
tiny flickers refreshing
each perception ...

the palms stilled against the sky
the empty shadows
sunlight lounging on the white brick walls ...

there, what's changing now
each flicker tumbling behind the others,
both seen and unseen, water into water

UNKNEADED DOUGH

the foal keeps running
around the paddock in tight
circles ... backwards!
like all of its workhorse kind
it's inexhaustible

I know, because I've
turned into a clay-like puddle
just racing after
this stubborn little tyro
trying to catch and slow it down

mind you, I mean an
actual puddle, lying
like unkneaded dough --
I recall a children's story
in which this also occurred,

but cannot recall
the fate of the doughy pile,
and there'd been no foal
spiraling backwards everywhere,
still egging it on to rise


[tanka series on a dream of 2-28-15. Another horse dream...hm. I will put this much out there: I've been using a "cross country skiing" exercise machine several times a week for quite some time now. More hoping to develop a bit of supporting muscle for my arthritic joints than to lose weight. And as I do so it does sometimes feel like chasing something in circles. I've also been thinking about my past even more than usual. Referenced I think by "backwards" in the dream. Then, there's that possibly meaningful homophone for "unkneaded" -- unneeded. And, as always, there are other levels that I won't go into here. BTW, I did actually remember that little bit from the mostly forgotten children's story while dreaming.
