CAPTAIN'S CHAIR (photo) & TIME WARP (dream writing) by Roswila

TIME WARP

The Past:

Captain Kirk* fights with the strong,
determined woman to keep her
from wreaking world-wide havoc,
while another woman,
young and vague, watches
from the shadows

Kirk must not let her get
to the colorfully winking control panel,
but he fails when to his utter dismay
she twists around in his tight grip
and quickly slams down the fiery red
"Total World Destruct" button ...

Centuries in the Future:

this world of transporter beams
and instant cures, cities under the sea
and whizzing by in sky orbits has been destroyed
in internecine war, is there any coming back
from the ashes this time?

yes, there'd been a mass annihilation
once before in ancient times ...

The Present:

Captain Kirk fights ...

[written on a dream of 2-12-16. *Captain of the galaxy traveling Starship Enterprise in the T.V. show, Star Trek (Sept. 1966 to Dec. 1967). The "Classic" first series as it's now called, since there were several spin-offs. The one that is still my favorite after all these years. I dream about Captain Kirk or the actor who played him every so often. Photo "Captain's Chair" (1-12-15 001v2) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

SHADOW BIRD (photomorph) & A BANG-UP SHOW (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A BANG-UP SHOW

his son's giving a bang-up show
at the piano, not only playing classics
like a pro, but making well-timed
and appropriate jokes as his fingers
prance across the keyboard

the apple sure didn't fall far from that tree!
his father must be so proud ... speaking
of whom, ah yes, there's his Dad
in the front row

but why's he looking away from his son's
delightful display of talent and skill?
and what is that look on his face?

the father actually seems embarrassed
or at least disappointed ... how sad
that he holds such unrealistic
expectations that he can't appreciate
his son's night in the limelight

or maybe it's that strong resemblance
between them that's unconsciously
disturbing the father so,

a mirror reflecting not only the light
but the shadows that he'd rather not own

THE BURDEN (photomorph) & COMBINED FREIGHT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

COMBINED FREIGHT

he stands looking out at the ocean,
a familiar silhouette against the bright sky

as I pass by I say to his back "It's a beautiful
day, isn't it?" and without turning he softly agrees

I do not even slow my brisk pace along the beach
edge path, though still unsure who stood there

for the hushed tones could have come from either
of two men, one from the past, the other from now

it's only clear that I'd disappointed them both,
never becoming who they wanted me to be

and more painful yet? I was, and still am,
even less the person I want myself to be

the noon sun burns, and my feet and legs
begin to hurt almost as much as my spirit

as it bends under the combined freight
of three fantasy women stuck to my back

STORM LIGHT (photomorph) & OF ROOTS AND RAIN (dream writing) by Roswila

OF ROOTS AND RAIN

As he holds the wooden panel away
from the hillside garden's extensive roots
he grouses, "I told you, here's the problem,
behind this new retaining wall."

Adding quickly that "Rain can't do much
to any further hurt, nor even help,
this already deeply troubled system.
It's not what falls or does not fall,
but walling off the roots."

Another male voice erupts in the winter air,
"Can you believe he's dismantling some of this
crucial storm preparation work!?" He leans
the large logs he'd been hauling against
a tree trunk, and brushes off his hands.
"There's no time for his know-it-all moralizing.
Not with the line up of huge storms
chomping at the bit off the coast.
We gotta prepare!"

The first man rolls his eyes in frustration at
this impassioned interruption of his own
honest, if sad, assessment of the day's
challenge, each man then returning
wordlessly to his separate work.

While leaves in the sprawling garden start
flipping in the rising morning wind,
nature's storm warning.

WHEEL OF NIGHT (photomorph) & NO ONE EVER SAID (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

NO ONE EVER SAID

like a frame out of an old Busby Berkeley
movie dance number, the women's legs
spread out in the air, thighs at the center,
feet at the edges, spokes in an odd wheel
of fortune awaiting its next spin

from behind, a woman's puzzled face
peers through the spaces between
this suspended array of bare gams

is she exploring? hiding? can she
even breathe from way back there?
what will she do when the inevitable
rapid spinning starts up again?

well, no one ever said
that this life would be
a walk in the park

WORRIMENT (photomorph) & RECLAIMING THE BIT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

RECLAIMING THE BIT

the friendly, obviously physically fit
woman expresses deep concern
about folk going right from lunch
break gym exercise straight back
to the intense mental stress of their jobs

that can't be good for them, can it?
she queries of no one in particular,
won't they stroke out, or at the very
least wind up even more anxious
with all that new energy rushing around?

I surprise myself by piping up
from the corner where I've been
sitting, wondering if I'll sign up for
the next aerobics class she leads

well, I say thoughtfully, it seems
to me that the opposite's probably true,
physical exercise has so many benefits
that it can't but help our busy brains,
even when they run wild on us

the oxygen supply alone could rescue
a hospital ward full of needy folk,
not to mention the vacation
from thinking, thinking, thinking

the body relishes any chance
to assist the brain, the trick inheres
in reclaiming the bit
from between the teeth
of the runaway mind

[free verse poem on a dream of 2-6-16. This dream was the result of a request I made of my dreams for help with my on-going despairing mood, as I turned over to go so sleep. Photomorph "Worriment" (12-8-15 1689ev4) by Roswila]
