HEATED WORDS (photomorph) & BUSINESS (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

BUSINESS

my young woman friend
announces her intent to print
a colorful volume
of her own poetry and photos,
charging a reasonable price

and today's question
enters here: why do I care
and then even say
that she'll be quite disappointed,
my past experience the proof,

since I'm actually rather grateful
this is no longer any business of mine

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

HOOKED (photomorph) & THE QUESTIONS CONTINUE... (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE QUESTIONS CONTINUE...

of all the questions
she's had recently about her dreams
this one takes the cake
(though to be honest, a cake she's
dreamed about in other ways before)

why, oh why, oh why-oh is she seeking not only
an awful man's attention but his approval

and then as if just yearning for his A-OK stamp
weren't enough, she debases herself further

here, she says, let me undo this double brassiere
I'm wearing, just watch how flexible I still am

and reaching behind her back she unhooks hook
after hook, ignoring the one gripping her heart

DEWFALL (photomorph) & CHANGING (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

CHANGING

the question today?
why this on-going lack of recall
of the dreams sleep brings?
as I skim last night's skimpy images
I wonder what's been changing

true, it's not so much
no dreams, no, not that for sure,
bits always dangle
like fog patches caught in trees
by the sudden morning sunlight

but evaporate
as soon as I grasp after them,
no fruit in my fist,
at most a chilly unreflective
dew dampening my lined palms

last night's soggy remains raise memories of childhood,
a time when someone else made choices for me

like that permanent my mother gave my soft wavy hair
that did not take, what was already fine resisting change

A WISH FOR WINGS (photo) & THE REQUEST (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE REQUEST

a female vampire
fills out a request form in the store:
"Why not give a class
on the mutated fruits and veggies
the younger folk eat these days,

as we old folk, vampires and normal people alike,
have no idea of their names or how to prepare them."

then she picks up her
fanged lover, putting him on her back
beneath her burgundy
velvet cape, and skims down the stairs
to the street (vampires fly, of course)

leaving the worker
who accepted her completed request
looking very puzzled:
why would a vampire care about fruit
and veggies of any kind, that normals eat?

hm, he wonders, maybe in these frightening
times even vampires hunger to be helpful

CONVERSATION (photomorph) & CONVICTED (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

CONVICTED

what's he guilty of,
he thinks, knowing only that
he's been convicted
well, at least he can graciously
serve out the sentence given

after all, he's not
totally housebound by it,
each morning he gets
to take a long walk on the pier
to report to his case manager

an elderly gal
who sometimes gets confused
and finds him scary
but her fugue passes quickly
and their talk turns to pleasantries

he'd always deeply yearned to live by the sea, so what's
a puzzling conviction compared to this wish granted

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION (photomorph) & "home improvement..." (dreamku) by Roswila

home improvement
she moves her dinner table
out to the hallway

[dreamku written and posted in July of 2007, and slightly tweaked today. Yeah, I could use some of this sort of home improvement now. Have been having a devil of a time with how I'm choosing to eat. Though I am making sure I'm maintaining, not gaining. Which is all to the good, since for all of my adult life up 'til now, if I wasn't losing I was gaining. Maintenance was only a concept. However, I do need and want to lose more weight, but have not gotten myself back into that particular gear yet. Maybe posting this old 'ku will help spark that shift. Photomorph "Round Table Discussion" (8-18-15 005v2f) by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

For more in-depth exploration of the dreamku forms specifically and one post in which I also address my photo choices:

-- very brief comparison of dreamku and haiku: DREAMKU ARE NOT HAIKU

-- a brief post about both dreamku and my photos THE AREN'TS OF DREAMKU & ACCOMPANYING DIGITAL PHOTOS.

-- detailed three-part post about dreamku: "A DREAMKU PRIMER: Writing Haiku-Like Poems About Your Night Dreams": PART ONE: Introduction & Writing Dreamku as Dream Work; PART TWO: Elements of the Haiku Form Used in Dreamku; and PART THREE: How to Write Dreamku (the second and third parts have some overlap).

-- a short up-dating post about the three-part "A DREAMKU PRIMER" -- Important Up-date to A DREAMKU PRIMER....".

ONE, TWO, THREE ... (photomorph) & THE THIRD (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE THIRD

things happen in threes,
or so it's said, and so this dream
would have it, also:
the third teal tuxedo's way too big
and the third vine can't reach the light

some magical underpinning to the universe
or just a number we note to feel prepared

even while other multiples weave their ways
unnoticed as they slowly upend our lives
