DEW FALL (photomorph) & "sunny day ..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

sunny day
the distant foothills go out
for a smoke

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

FLARE-UP (photomorph) & FRACTURES (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

FRACTURES

he argues defensively and loud
on his cell, his broken reflection
trailing him from street puddle
to street puddle, and I'm hoisted
on the petard of his angst, my own
fractures widening in reflexive
response, but I quickly remind myself
it's not all that's going on at this
crossroads, and raise my head
toward the sky just in time to see
blue slip through the enclosing clouds
and welcome the advance touch
of sunlight mending the ragged edges
of the chill

MAY I TOUCH YOU? (photo) & A DISTURBING PAIR (dream narrative pair) by Roswila

A DISTURBING PAIR

In the first dream, a fair haired, aging actor that I have no particular feelings about now but used to thoroughly dislike when he was much younger, comes to my apartment to try to fix the square white typing machine on which I produce all my writing; he does not succeed though he tries for some time, while I begin to wonder why I don't stop him as the machine is so out of date anyway and should just be trashed; as I tell a woman friend later about his visit, I'm embarrassed to, so don't mention the attraction he and I clearly felt, a pull that titillated but even more so disturbed me, as if it were somehow both as practiced and insubstantial as a performance in a love scene from one of his old movies.

In the second dream, an aged soap opera actor I've started an intimate involvement with and I enter and take seats in a large empty theatre, he sitting several seats away from me, then telling me to get up and sit next to him, that this way we can cuddle beneath my jacket with his arm around me; I neither like nor understand his sitting so far away from me, nor do I like being told what to do, especially so imperiously; but I move quickly to sit next to him anyway as cuddling under my jacket sounds delightful, both for warmth, and for the touch of a man I like -- something I'm still running on a deficit for; however, no matter how I fuss at it, once we're settled in, my jacket covers my mouth and nose, precipitating an anxious memory of having to wear an oxygen mask after surgery that, to the contrary, made me feel as if I couldn't breathe.

WHICH CORNER OF HELL DO YOU PREFER (photomorph) & PRE-SHRINKING (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRE-SHRINKING

Go away! Get off my back! isn't it enough you've
already ruined much of my life and severely limited
the rest of it? your cowardly appetite deserves no less
than any horrendously crowded corner of Hell,
forever afire with excruciating memories of the children
you abused on earth; why won't you leave me be? let me
sink or swim on my own, without your ghost
at my back and threatening breath in my ear;
I can fail as readily and far more creatively without
your haunt rising out of the past to assault me
as you did long ago; and although one might think I'd
prefer you to be sentenced by some cosmic court to go
straight to Hell, a quick stop to stand in full view of me,
right up front so that I can curse you out to what's
left of your long ago face, well, this would suit me
extremely well indeed, a sort of pre-shrinking before
you're tossed into the fiery forever wash of Hell.

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-26-17. It may seem odd but I'm finally ready to post this one because I feel exceptionally good today. And, yes, maybe someday I'll heal enough to be able to wish his soul well. But I'm not there yet, clearly. Though I have prayed for a great many years that he didn't go on to abuse other girls because his threat to kill me if I spoke out worked and I remained silent. FRACTURED SKY (photomorph) & THE WOLF (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE WOLF

anywhere she wanders, there's
that wolf with the broken sky
in his eyes, watching; maybe not
her, and maybe not anything
even of this earth calls him
to attention, but there he stands
each time she becomes aware
of an arresting animal shape
in the periphery of her vision,
his head turned vaguely in her
direction with ears on alert,
islands of sky shining blindingly
bright in his black eyes like
shattered mirrors

TREE OF HEAVEN (photomorph) & DELTOPIA 2017 (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

DELTOPIA 2017*

I toddle along with my old lady walker,
back from a visit to the beach overlook,
passed by an increasingly turbulent stream
of celebrating University students:
this spring's street party has begun!
the music from balcony parties bursts louder
with each block I wheel down, the bass beats
thrumming in my breast stimulating memories
of my own spring ages ago and that college break
weekend in the infamous Fort Lauderdale;
as I head slowly toward my retirement
community, I'm only rarely acknowledged
with an hello, mostly I'm totally ignored,
no more than a rather vague obstacle to be
gotten past in their youthful surge to be
rebellious and intensely sexy, little do they
know something inside me is still, even at this
late date, no different from they, but bears
compelling passions, and a desire to party
and propriety be damned; as I start to crane
my neck way up to view a balcony blow out
whose booming music has suddenly started,
a vast number of small dry dead leaves skitter
across the black top ahead of my walker wheels
in crisp bursts of leaf after leaf, as if large
invisible fingers were texting us all, old lady and
students alike: this is how each of us winds up --
fallen or ripped from the Tree of Life
and blown home on the will of heaven
