TAILWIND (photo art) & REMEMBERED SKIES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

REMEMBERED SKIES

in the remembered October skies
of childhood -- those endless skies
that yielded not a wisp of the future
their farthest edges brushed -- plane
after large passenger plane lines up
like migrating geese, their precise
twin lines shining in the sunlight
as they swoop off and vanish
into the distance, followed swiftly
by a rag-tag fleet of private planes
that adjust to form another wedge
in the spreading sky, mismatched
in size and shape they queue up
neatly, glimmering brightly
in the morning light as they too fly
out of sight trailing the commercial planes
like younger siblings, awe hangs behind
in the suddenly empty air prompting
the question: why this display of prowess
as if there'd been a homeland threat

[free verse poem on a dream of 6-13-14. Maybe it's just that yesterday was Friday the 13th? :-) Seriously, there's a lot in this layered dream/poem. Enough to keep me busy following down its clues later tonight when I have time. Photo art "Tailwind" (4-19-14 005v12) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

EGG OF UNREASON (photo art) & THE ENDLESS FRAY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE ENDLESS FRAY

Dream One:

she exits the elevator leaving me alone
with all her garbage strewn
like gargantuan confetti
across the checked tile floor

my anger's quickly usurped by a certainty:
I'd better pick it all up, no matter how difficult,
for simply seeing me standing here
when the doors open will lead others
to assume I'm the one who dropped
it all like hot potatoes

Dream Two:

somehow I know I'll be blamed for this horrible
late night break-in, for this nameless
thief in the night, as if simply
surviving the tornado of his passage
were proof enough of guilt

Dream Three:

he's drawn a bead on reuniting
with his estranged wife, my best friend,
but neither she nor I feel
he's any less angry than before

when he embraces her I sense she's relenting
and about to let him in again,
even as his cutting intent glints
in his hooded eyes

how can I ever hope to separate them,
this dear but weak-willed woman
and this huge abusive man?
yet I know how guilty I'll feel
if I don't risk life and limb
and stay in the middle
of this endless fray

[three part free verse poem on three separate dreams of 6-9-14. This dream/poem is from the height of my PMS (pre-moon syndrome) three evenings ago. I'm grateful the full moon is finally here today. I'll now feel better. Probably only a wee bit, but I'll take every little improvement offered. Photo art "Egg of Unreason" (9-15-13 007v15) is one of those pix of mine whose shapes have enticed several versions, a couple previously posted; by Roswila]

HAVE A BALL (photo) & IT'S A TOSS UP (dream tanka) by Roswila

IT'S A TOSS UP

breaking the boredom
cats toss dry food in the air
catching and gulping
the kitchen like center ring
in a travelling circus

[tanka on a dream of 6-10-14. Photo "Have A Ball" (6-2-14 004v3), this is a football lily in its natural color and shape, all I did in Photoshop was try to make it look like a painting, by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

For more in-depth exploration of the dreamku forms specifically and one post in which I also address my photo choices:

-- very brief comparison of dreamku and haiku: DREAMKU ARE NOT HAIKU

-- a brief post about both dreamku and my photos THE AREN'TS OF DREAMKU & ACCOMPANYING DIGITAL PHOTOS.

-- detailed three-part post about dreamku: "A DREAMKU PRIMER: Writing Haiku-Like Poems About Your Night Dreams": PART ONE: Introduction & Writing Dreamku as Dream Work; PART TWO: Elements of the Haiku Form Used in Dreamku; and PART THREE: How to Write Dreamku (the second and third parts have some overlap).

-- a short up-dating post about the three-part "A DREAMKU PRIMER" -- Important Up-date to A DREAMKU PRIMER....".

MOONBEAMS (photo art) & "moonlight through ..." (non-dream monoku) by Roswila

TORNADIC (photo art) & "no matter ..." (non-dream scifaiku) by Roswila

no matter her perpetual cyclones
the empaths see right through her

[Scifaiku written 6-9-14 in response to another scifaiku on a Yahoo group I've been participating in, on and off, for many years. Scifaiku are basically haiku/monoku/two-liners with sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or cosmological themes. In this email group (posts can also be made on the website) we often respond in long strings to each others' 'ku. The response (much as in the Japanese renku form) can be very subtle or direct, or even a punning one. Forgive me if you've read my previous explanations of scifaiku, but it's been some time since I posted one so clarification could well be due. BTW, I tried posting a link to info on the scifaiku Yahoo group I'm with. But anything Yahoo these days can be frustrating to deal with. Suffice it to say I kept getting an error message, though the link I used was absolutely correct and coded fine on this blog. So if you'd like to get more info on it, search for "scifaiku" at Yahoo groups and click on the one with a feathered orange icon. Photo art "Tornadic" (9-13-10 10104v7) by Roswila]

NO WAY IN (photo art) & THE KEYS TO IT ALL (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE KEYS TO IT ALL

ah hah! so that's why she's visiting me
after all these years: to let me know
she's being stalked by a known
serial killer of women

well, yes, it's unthinkable
that she's between the crosshairs
of such an awful creature,
but as always there'd been no contact
at all from her until she needed
something from me

yet I hug her long and close,
love still living beneath
my accumulated cynical crust,
and ask her to tell me
about the massive chain
of keys she'd mailed to me,
labeled "backup copies"

she carefully points to key after key
on the heavy necklace-size chain,
telling me what door or window
each is for in her new house

by the time she's completed
this dark rosary I feel as if I've
taken a tour of the home
she fled to in secret to try
to shake off her stalker

no, nothing much has changed,
beyond her being stalked,
for like the house to which
this huge jingling key ring
belongs, she's always been
locked up inside in fear

[free verse poem on a dream of 6-7-14. This dream offered a possible insight into one particular person in my life, and maybe others. But I hasten to add that the final point may apply as much and maybe more to me as to anyone else. Of course, there's the fact that I was given all those keys. I'll be pondering that for some time to come. Photo art "No Way In" (9-13-10 10081v3) by Roswila]
