DUSTING OFF (photo) & THE GLUE TRAP (dream tanka) by Roswila

THE GLUE TRAP

gobsmacked! again!
the more one tries to come clean
the more needs washing
maybe what most needs cleaning up
is this gluey sense of shame

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

VIEW FROM THE DARKSIDE (photomorph) & UNTIL THE MURDER (dream tankas w/2-liner) by Roswila

UNTIL THE MURDER

it was as if
she'd not really existed
until the murder,
until a few of his blows
also hit her as he pummeled,
until the whizzing
of his knife past her own ear
as he aimed for
and pierced the shadowy heart
of that stranger next to her

yes, it was as if
life only started with the
death of the unknown,
that enigma that rises
quickly again from the grave
leaving her to yearn for another murder
so that she can breathe, if only for a moment

[three tanka capped by two-liner, partly run together, on a dream of 2-26-15. This is one of those that I hesitate to go into, but not because of its dark aspect. Because it would be like explaining a joke, it would lose its punch. And I've explored one of its issues here before. However, I hasten to add it also addresses other deep issues that are difficult to acknowledge much less own, therefore the attention demanding intensity of the images. WIND RIDER (photomorph) & HOME FOR HORSES (dream tanka series w/2-liner) by Roswila

HOME FOR HORSES

surrounded by trees
the open rolling field's
a home for horses
for ailing mounts to recover
in freedom and peace

as we wander around
we come across a brown horse
lying flat on its side
I seem to recall horses rarely
do this so it's not a good sign

then I realize
that it's died and reach out
to touch its long neck
quite some time must have passed
it's not even warm anymore

I ask that my friend
call the owner of the field
when a straight stiff leg
of the horse springs up
I gently push it back

and laughing sadly to myself think:
you can't keep a good horse down

[tanka series capped by a two-liner on a dream of 2-25-15. Don't ask me! Dunnoh! Well, not exactly true. I've loved horses since earliest childhood. And I'm sure that association will take me on a long, wandering ride that will be too much to go into here. Just typing (excuse me, "keyboarding") this took me down a couple of dusty paths already, one right into my present life. Photomorph "Wind Rider" (12-7-14 006v7a) by Roswila]

CROSSING (photo) & BRING ON THE ROSES (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

BRING ON THE ROSES

"Everything's coming up
roses ..."* I float myself into
morning singing this song

well, yes, I guess so,
even in the middle of my
renewed cynicism
this applies, for each rose
has its share of thorns and shadows

not to mention how
soon each joyous bloom dies ...
a bit like life, ey?

no escaping it
even as it begs the question
of usefulness
(I won't touch "meaning" with that
proverbial ten foot pole)

though one can always choose to view it all
from the land of the surreal, where joy and pain,

sensical and non-, all those opposites that
chase after each other in endless cycles,

calmly cohabit
defying sense and gravity
easing the brain's
cramped demand to find clear
purpose and import to it all

a form of transcendence I suppose -- so here's
an end to all this rambling: bring on the roses

[mix of tanka, dreamku, and two-liners on thoughts about lyrics sung in a dream of 2-24-15. *Lyrics to "Everything's Coming Up Roses," that I woke myself up singing this morning. As the image of surreality came to me while drafting this dream poem, I realized this may be why I've always loved surrealist paintings. Another dream from last night offered a different approach: silliness. (Three different celebrities were doing an exceedingly silly new dance.) Photo "Crossing" (6-10-09 2014) by Roswila]

DANCE FOR THE DAY (photomorph) & THE PHOTO (dream tanka series w/2-liner) by Roswila

THE PHOTO

in the dream she sees
her nine-year old self, posed in
that fading photo
she no longer has, a nervous
ballerina, pre-performance

the angle from which
the photo was taken makes
her arabesque look
like a flamingo's stand, her raised
leg hidden by her tutu

that tutu sewn by
her mother, while she hovered
curious and happy
to have her mother's attention
so focused on her costume

the photo also shows
the stage make-up that her father,
the singer/actor,
had carefully applied, slightly
maturing her child's face

and what a great gift
this dream photo's rise quickly
proves to be, even
though seeing it prompts memory
of her mother's death a year later,

and the subsequent
loss of her father to forever
mourning -- for this
dream version holds what its
lost physicality never did:

the recognition that there'd been a time
she'd danced lightly in a family's embrace

[tanka series capped by a two-liner on a dream of 2-23-15. This was prompted by a dream in which I saw a photo I no longer actually have but recall clearly. All details are autobiographical and were recalled in the dream, as well. And that ending insight is what hit me as I was waking up and beginning to sketch out this poem in my mind. LIGHTING THE WAY (photomorph) & THE MORE THINGS CHANGE (dream tanka series w/2-liner) by Roswila

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE

as Yogi Berra said
deja vu all over again:
there's plenty of room
on the white sand beach for folk
and their paraphernalia

I carefully choose
a spot for all my stuff
near the lifeguard
then wander unencumbered
toward the ocean's lacey edge

but the surf's way too
close, too much beach dragged away
in last winter's storms
or is it just an extremely
unseasonably high tide

I turn back around
to head up to my blanket --
the mountainous beach
rises before me, so bright
in the sun it hurts my eyes

not this, too, again!
I've lost count of how many
times in dreams I've been
hotly faced with this same climb
up a crumbling wall of sand

as another old expression goes: the more
things change, the more they stay the same

[tanka series capped with a two-liner on a dream of 2-23-15. I was aware as I was dreaming that I'd dreamed it all before, many times. Things have been slightly different in each dreaming in their details, but not in what they are. And the detail that I find interesting here is the thought that it might be an "unseasonably high tide." Which in itself could very well be the point of the entire (re-)dreaming. A NEW TWIST (photomorph) & LANDSCAPING (free verse poem) by Roswila

LANDSCAPING

do we retrieve a memory intact
from storage, at most slightly
wrinkled or dusty, or maybe
browning at the edges
like an ancient family photo

or does the energy of recall
flood the river bed, cut by
experience and left high
and dry by the passage of time,
sculpting new meanderings

the debris of older turnings
left behind like seeds on its banks,
and the sun of remembering slowly
drawing out a new landscape

[Free verse poem written 2-22-15. Though not directly dream-based, I suspect forgotten dreaming heavily influenced it, as I woke this morning already writing it in my mind. Already fussing at the question of whether memories are true/accurate. And also whether remembering and even perception of the present moment might be more like dreaming: an art. Not static but an on-going creative process. Not that it's a new idea that simply by remembering we change the memory in some way. I just haven't ever fully explored the implications of this. Largely, I suppose, because I am rather attached to what I understand to be what I remember. (LOL, this all gets very difficult to express the more I think about it.) I also keep recalling that expression "You can't step into the same river twice." Photomorph "A New Twist" (8259ev5c) by Roswila]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.
