SHADOWS MAKE THEIR POINT (photo) & ULTIMATELY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ULTIMATELY

she often ultimately gets
what she most deeply
and persistently wishes for,
but not in a straightforward fashion,
nor in a timely way, nor even whole
or fully satisfying, rather,
what she's coveted for so long
takes its own sweet time to float in,
by then bloated and twisted
in ways she'd never have expected,
or the object of her desire
trails pointed, weighty problems
that pull on its tender skin
puncturing it till all the air
drains out of having gotten
what she wanted at last

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

RELEAF (photo) & A NEW LEAF (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

A NEW LEAF

criss-crossed with dark scribbling
the page flips
to its blank side in a puff of breeze
would that it were as easy
to turn over a new leaf

MIRAGE (photomorph) & NEVER THE TWAIN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

NEVER THE TWAIN

... and never the twain shall meet,
this wannabe Ado Annie,*
and the morphing mirage:

she only craving to say yes
again and again to him,
and he, whichever intriguing
male has stepped to the fore,
wavering before her eyes
then vanishing from her grasp
like fog when she reaches
yet one more time
after what she'd dared to hope
against hope was real

VIEW FROM THE EDGE (photo) & THE NOURISHING STEW (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE NOURISHING STEW

"All shall be well, and all shall be well,
all manner of thing shall be well"*
and how could it not be when something
from somewhere grabs her by the collar
each time she comes close to the edge
of the cliff driven by a desperate
desire to jump and make an end
to all the sturm und drang,
and since now there are times
when the rise of storm and stress
takes on an odd flavor, as if
it were no more than the passing
unpleasantness of one unground
pepper seed she's inadvertently chomped
on in a mouthful of nourishing stew

[non-dream free verse poem written 7-16-16. *Said by Julian of Norwich, a 14th century anchorite nun. And, yes, I used this quote in a previous recent poem. It's really resonating for me these days. BTW, I'm not a pepper aficionado by any stretch of the imagination. I've got a wimpy Irish palate. Smile. Photo "View From the Edge" (7-20-16 017v2) by Roswila]

MEMORIES OF MIDNIGHT (photomorph) & AT LAST (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

AT LAST

like a succubus* propelled by the twin tortures
of long time famine and an object of intense desire,
I would swoop down on you through
this bright afternoon, a haunted huntress forced
out of her masking midnight element by hunger,
and have my way with you, our long limbs
tangled until I'm sated and at rest
in the open light of day,
nothing hidden or held back
between us
at last

DON'T TOUCH (photomorph) & FRAIDY CAT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

FRAIDY CAT

he rushes away,
saying over his shoulder
that I can pay later
for his original painting
should I decide that I do
really want to keep it

it's particularly
beautiful, impressionistic,
mostly sunrise yellow
I smile wryly, associating the color
with its meaning of cowardice

but who's the fraidy cat here? he, rushing
off without waiting for my reaction?

or me? not even attempting to call him back
to the unknown hanging fire between us

[two tanka and two two-liners on a dream of 7-16-16. Even more than the presence of fear in relationships, I've been thinking about that third line in the first tanka. It feels like a warning: consider the cost of acceptance. Photomorph "Don't Touch" 6-5-09 1837v4a) by Roswila]
