BLUE BAYOU (photomorph) & WHAT WE NEED (dream writing) by Roswila

WHAT WE NEED

the youthful, slim senior
tells me about her ex
and how they had a "let's see
how it goes" date last night,
the twinkle in her eye
announcing quite a story to come:

"Do you remember that pretty
pale blue nightgown with the slim
lace straps and trim I told you about?
well, the rotter took it! yes!
it was hanging in my bathroom
and he just bundled it up when I
wasn't looking and off he went
in his little black volks

but his conscience must've gotten
the better of him 'cuz he was back
before I'd noticed the theft,
asking if he could wear it
around my home once in a while

well, when I stopped laughing
I said, sure, why not, maybe
that's just what we need
during this time of possible
reconnection

you, standing there (he was putting
it on already!), your hairy chest
muscles cupped by bursting lace
and silky pale blue

after all, we've agreed that what we
need most if we're going
to start over, is something
titillating, and a great deal
of laughter"

PERCEPTION (photomorph) & LIGHTNING STRIKE (prose dream poem) by Roswila

LIGHTNING STRIKE

the woman I'd thought would be the kind
of friend I've missed having, who turned
out to be the "same old, same old"
disconnect, agrees with me about Florida

how although it resembles our California
landscape at times, there's just something
quite "off" about it, and I think sadly
to myself that this just about describes
our near miss friendship

we go on, getting more specific about
the "offness" ... the trees are not only
rather scruffy looking but they're mostly
like northeastern trees, far fewer palms
stir the lazy sky with their variety
of fronds, and the roads don't so much
roll on in Florida as move in awkward
fits and starts and sudden right angle
turns, and, oh, don't forget the yawning
sink holes

I miss what she says next as I wonder
why this state of my birth and first five years
is even under discussion, I've not been there
in many years and will never go back again,
California's my home and stomping grounds
'til the bloody end

and out of nowhere a question cleaves
my maundering like a lightning strike:
have I ever really succeeded in leaving Florida
behind, or does its divergent views, sudden
turns and sink holes filter everything I see,
including this woman next to me,
casting a distorting light on it all

SO MANY CHAINS (photomorph) & IN THE BASEMENT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE BASEMENT

how the blazes did she know that!?
"that" being which plug to pull
to stop all that incredibly noisy,
wobbling and shimmying machinery,
as it clunked and grumbled away
in this dreary basement?

all I saw, still see, is a maze of wires
looping back and forth over each other,
and across and beneath and snaking
from behind, every one of the boxy
whiz-bangs in this complex
(and probably totally unthought out)
array of endlessly busy machines

and why all this underground machination
anyway, what could it possibly have been
supporting above ground, since now
that she's pulled the plug nothing seems
to have changed (no cries of surprise
or despair trailing down the steep
basement stairs) except for this
oh-so-welcome
silence

[free verse poem on a dream of 3-9-16. LOL (a rather wry one at that), this is very much a wish fulfillment dream. And not for silence in the objective world. Photomorph "So Many Chains" (3-3-16 002v10a) by Roswila]

COINAGE (photomorph) & THE LAST RAW ONION (prose dream poem) by Roswila

THE LAST RAW ONION

There came a time when all she could think to do
to save the two young sons she still had living
was to run, and so she did ...

even had she known she'd wind up in the desert
eating only the onions that (thankfully) grow here
she'd still have gone on the run

her sons huddle around her as she reassures
them her tears come only from the onion
she's eating (a small lie, but sometimes better
than a big painful truth)

she goes on to explain they're headed for Mexico
where she can freely spend from her purse
of gold doubloons for shelter and food
(that she'd thought to steal from the house
of horrors when they'd escaped)

it not occurring to her in the rush and heat
of escape that doubloons would be traceable,
standing out distinctly from paper money
and silver coins

and so across the border they will go, where
the form lucre takes varies almost as much
as the person laying it out, therefore,
not traceable to the spender

she takes another bite of (hopefully)
the last raw desert onion she'll have to eat,
vowing yet again that they will not take
anymore of her children from her,
and prepares herself to start the long trek
to the border through the cool of the night

her resilient, dark haired sons
chase each other laughing lightly
under a soft sunset, while saguaro cacti
thrust their silhouetted arms to the sky
as if in silent celebration

WATCH YOUR STEP! (photomorph) & THE SOUTH ENDS OF TWO MAGNETS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE SOUTH ENDS OF TWO MAGNETS

they meet in front of a vending machine,
seemingly by accident, but given their cunning
and seductive personalities, it's highly unlikely

very much alike in both their dark hair and eyes
and magnetism, they immediately start to flirt
heavily with each other, their energies almost
visibly colliding like intense weather fronts

"like the south ends of two magnets" might
be more accurate, leaving one to wonder
what could possibly hold them together
long enough to engage in monkey-business

even as the younger, the female of this odd couple,
begins to feel the pressure from "too much alike"
while the male continues on in his self-
congratulatory way about how their intelligence
beats even their good looks

she backs away from him, thinking that he
and the others haven't seen anything yet,
if anyone believes they've seen trouble from him
just wait 'til she's fully developed and launched,

as if she were a silent heat seeking missile
it will always be over before they even know it

[free verse poem on a dream of 3-7-16. Phew! This is one of those multi-level dreams, that also manages to be both a recapitulation of the past and a warning about what's beginning. And all with respect to both outer and inner relationships. Also, at one level, here are the weak King and Evil Fairy of the Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale I referenced in yesterday's post. BTW, I can't resist pointing out that vending machine in the first line. Leaving aside a host of associations, just it's reality as a costly food dispenser gave me quite a mordant chuckle when I recalled it -- given my food (call a spade a spade...) addiction. And, of course, that's just one of the threads that can be drawn all the way through the dream/poem. Photomorph "Watch Your Step!" (9-13-10 10047v2f) by Roswila]

A LONG SLEEP (photo) & SLEEPING BEAUTY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

SLEEPING BEAUTY

first, she invites me
over when she's very tired
but doesn't tell me
then, asks me to leave my art supplies
in her room so that we can chat

and now she's gone into her room to nap,
asking that I not disturb her, and shut the door

well, just how am I going to retrieve my supplies
from this long time friend's off limits bedroom

take a chance and tip toe in? she sleeps light
and readily cries inconsideration

I could join her in the arms of Morpheus on the couch
but I've had enough unconsciousness for today

I will find something else to do while she naps,
and just let this sleeping beauty* rest

[a tanka with two-liners on a dream of 3-6-16. * Here's a psychological interpretation of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is rather rich. I've only done one quick read through and I'm looking forward to taking more time later tonight to see how it further informs this dream/poem. BTW, the Sleeping Beauty image was not explicit in the dream, but surfaced with conviction as I was drafting the poem. And the "she" in this dream was an actual friend of mine from many, many years ago. Between writing this poem and reading the fairy tale interpretation linked to above, I've stumbled my way into some very sad and deep but freeing empathy with her. WINGS OF THE VAMPIRE (photomorph) & THE ARTISTIC VAMPIRE (dream monologue) by Roswila

THE ARTISTIC VAMPIRE

lookit! lookit here! huge binders
of their art, what a wonderful record to have!
(yes, "their" being that woman and man
whose work you and I so admire)

let's open the woman's first ... hm, it's packed
with only her writing (well, if I recall correctly,
isn't she also a visual artist?) but we don't have
time to savor it right now so I'll just leaf through

ah, a hyper-link to the man's art ... wow, just
a glancing look and it's jumped us to his art binder

and here he is, stuffed between pages but
still live and in person, his hair trying to outshine
both sun and moon, his eyes, the morning sky
... oh-my-oh-my, a buff and butt naked young vampire
(yeah, you didn't know that last about him, did you?)

oy, he's in some sort of difficulty ... see?
he's locked out on a high, narrow building ledge,
guess he hasn't had a drink of blood in too long
or he could just turn into his bat self and fly off
(no, as real as this scene is it's not real enough
that we can actually help him ...)

what's happening? he smells and hears something ...
that's good! there's a human wandering behind
that dark window, maybe they'll unlock it
and let him in off the ledge ... (sigh, you're quite right,
I'm forgetting the nature of both beasts: no human
can risk inviting a vampire in)

then again, maybe this is just another example of his
carefully crafted stories, and for this talented
vampire's sake, I certainly hope so, since even
vampires can be stranded and starve
until they fade away
into nothing
