ON THE SURFACE (photomorph) & BUT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BUT

he's not the one for me
he holds no urge or need to plumb
the depths
but
he might be good for a surface
ride ... or two ... or three ...
or ... maybe more ...

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

ALL FALL DOWN (photomorph) & WAY TOO BIG (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

WAY TOO BIG

the hat's way too big on me, a huge
latter day sombrero, intricately
embroidered in silver and black,
providing endless shelter
from exposure, even as it forces
me to balance, keeping me
from falling
ass over tea kettle
for you

IN AN ELEPHANT'S EYE (photomorph) & ON OUTING (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

ON OUTING

yikes! I'm way behind
schedule, I'll have to leave all
this stuff on the floor --
but no worry, my new roommates
will surely tidy it nicely for me

and I'd do the same
for them, the way I have for each
roommate in the past --
it's an accommodation folk
make for each other as needed

but when I get home
all my stuff's just where I left it,
though my roommates have
been here and moved their own things,
rearranging them around my small piles

I talk to them both
later, but all they do is verbally
hog tie me, I feel
as if I'm in a straight jacket again
I can't stand when people do this!

I'm so tired of this crap: being
related to as if I'm off the wall

when all I'm ever trying to do
is out the elephant in the room

AND THE DEVIL GRINS (photomorph) & THE SURPRISE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE SURPRISE

it's a bit of a surprise when
my nearly life long friend
sings out full voice as she's so
shy about any sort of performing
for others; I can even hear her way
over here in the dingy grey office
hallway; I rush to her sunny,
wall-less work area,
to tease
her about
her sudden
brazenness,
brandishing
a costume
devil's pitch-
fork in front
of me; as I
approach
her I start
scribbling
magic sigils
in the air with
the pitchfork
that I make up
as I go along;
her tension
when she sees
me turns
immediately
to amusement;
a bright smile
lights her dear
face: I guess it
really is OK
to play
devil's
advocate

MISPRINT (photomorph) & ON PLAYING A ROLE (prose poem on a dream) by Roswila

ON PLAYING A ROLE

I'm suddenly concerned that the new printer
someone gave us for the office might
have been stolen while I was off
performing a role in a play

yeah, it wasn't my responsibility only, but
I am the resident of that office and I'm
the one who uses the printer the most

when I arrive at the office two other
co-workers are sitting there; neither
seems to notice the empty corner
where the printer had been

I knew it! I think; it was just like leaving
a sign on it: I'm compact, barely
used, and free for the taking

I quickly check the closet, hoping an office
mate had seen it was unattended and put
it safely away, but of course
it's not there either

my two co-workers don't seem at all upset
even once I ask them outright if they've
seen the shiny new black printer

they assume whatever problem comes up
that someone else will take care of it:
a life attitude I'd never had the guts
to spout, much less believe

and just what was so important to me
about the role in that play anyway?
... another gift stolen away

[prose poem on a dream of 8-7-17. I won't go into it here, but a computer printer -- especially one that's a gift -- is a loaded image for me at this point in my life. Having everything to do with what the psychologist Alice Miller's THE DRAMA OF THE GIFTED CHILD suggests (which book I'm re-reading now for at the least the third time in a few decades). Link to wikipedia info on Alice Miller: just scroll down to the section on the book. It's the only description I found online that I liked at all. Her theory just above the section on the book, about "the roots of violence" is worth a read, too. (There's an odd dearth of good writing about this book online. And most of what there was was so shallow I couldn't believe we'd read the same book.) I don't recall what tipped me off it was time to read her book again. But it's making a certain sort of deeper sense out of the agony I've been going through for at least a year now, and so much more. Photomorph "Misprint" (6-4-17 038v3c) by Roswila]

NIGHT MUSIC (photomorph) & FLIP FLOPS (prose poem on a dream) by Roswila

FLIP FLOPS

as evening draws near, a man I like but don't
know very well approaches me gallantly;
we head off for a lazy stroll along
the summer city sidewalk;
I have my arm looped through his for support
as I'd forgotten to put on shoes and want
to be able to quickly adjust my trajectory
as need be to avoid rough spots
along the way;
he briefly stops and bends forward to read out
loud from a flyer in a store window: a country
music band's going to start playing
soon in the tavern maybe a block
and a half away;
I'd forgotten they were to appear tonight, and
when he and I excitedly agree to head there,
I recall I probably won't be allowed
in with bare feet;
I say that I bought a pair of flip flops at
Trader Joe's not long ago, maybe they still
sell them, they're cheap, and there's a
Trader Joe's right over there;
we hurry to it, he very carefully supporting
my hobbling bare foot shuffle, his hand
cupping my left elbow;
in the store he guides me, hand on my lower
back, into an empty changing room
and says to stay there;
I chuckle: privacy to put on sandals? but it
feels good to be so thoughtfully taken care
of for a change;
when he returns with a pair of yellow flip
flops I see they're a different style from
those others I'd gotten, thicker soled,
which is great, and not as large so
they won't flop around quite
so much;
he starts to place them in my hands, then puts
them on the floor in front of me instead so
that I can readily slip them on: how little
it takes for a man to make me
feel like Cinderella

PARTY WAVE (photomorph) & IN THE SWIM (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE SWIM

I'm swimming at the ocean's edge, back toward my home;
it's a lovely sunny day and lots of people are swimming
but all are headed in the opposite direction; I would
like to swim all out, doing the Australian crawl as I
haven't done in too many years, but find I must
mostly dog paddle to keep from colliding
with these other swimmers whose
trajectories tend to the erratic;
however, it's no problem
as I'm more than content
just to be in the swim,
and making steady
progress
