SYMPATHIC (photomorph) & GETTING HER NUMBER (dream tanka series w/2 2-liners) by Roswila

GETTING HER NUMBER

he wanders by her
letting his hands casually
brush her curvy butt
after all, most women don't
bother to react at all

but not only does
she react, she lets him know it's
unacceptable
behavior, and for the first time
he experiences rejection

she senses his hurt
and tries to mollify it,
she doesn't fully
succeed and leaves for the nonce,
as he checks his little black book

he dials three numbers
not sure he's gotten them right,
the longest one hers
and the one he's admittedly
most hoping will connect

not realizing that he'd gotten her number the moment
she'd let her empathy outweigh his scuzzy behavior,

nor that the hurt feelings still nagging him
could very well be viewed as a gift

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

SONG OF THE ARCTIC (photomorph) & THERE'S NO UNRINGING (dream tanka w/2-liner) by Roswila

THERE'S NO UNRINGING

there's no unringing
the ancient bell of the cosmos
nor predicting
the coursing of its ongoing
waves of hairline fractures

the ringing and the waves -- melody and lyrics

WHAT'S NEXT? (photo) & TREADING THE BOARDS (2 dream tanka w/2-liner) by Roswila

TREADING THE BOARDS

the aged veteran
of many a musical show
treads her rooms floorboards --
she's just moved in, the rooms echoing,
empty as yet of any furniture

she deeply wishes
she could sing and dance her way
through each one of them:
sounding for its hidden presence
its abiding raison d'etre

but walking will have to suffice, for her body
can't keep up though her spirit sings out in delight

[two tanka capped by a two-liner on a dream of 3-24-15. BTW, "treading the boards" is an old expression for being a theatre performer. And as I've mentioned here many times before, I come from a theatre family, going back to my grandparents who were in Vaudeville. I've an additional strong, different association to that image that reaches decades back, and will leave it at that. Only adding that this little dream was a huge and happy surprise. Especially given my recent persistent, very blue mood. Photo "What's Next?" (3-2-15 2703e2) by Roswila]

NESTED (photomorph) & "the cawing of crows..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

the cawing of crows
in the post-shower breezes
her cane keeps the beat

[non-dream haiku written 7-16-14 & tweaked in March of 2015. I have a vague dream memory from last night I may write about for some other day's posting. But right now it seemed good to put up a small poem, given how lengthy my most recent ones have been. Additionally, this one has been hanging fire for quite some time. I also like that it implies walking, which I'm starting to do more of (in addition to using that ski machine I mentioned, several times a week). However, to work up gradually to longer walks I'll need to use my walker as it has a seat. One can't count on benches being where one needs them to be. In fact, close to six years ago when I was able to walk a mile in each direction from where I live (to/from the beach overlook! sigh), there was only one spot to sit along the way. A bus stop bench and I didn't always need to sit at it. Ah, well, we shall see how it goes, these several more arthritic years later. Photomorph "Nested" (3-3-10 10002v6) by Roswila]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

until next time, keep dreaming,

IN THE BEGINNING (photomorph) & THE STORY LINE (dream tanka series w/2 2-liners) by Roswila

THE STORY LINE

my young boy cousin
proudly shows me the birthday
greeting he's written
for our great-grandmother's
ninety-something-odd celebration

he quickly declares
he printed it all in pencil
so "don't hesitate!"
to offer comments on content
or spot any grammar goofs

it's a missive
I know anyone would be
happy to receive,
anyone but our great-grand,
that is, yet how can I explain

how can I tell him
his affection's not only
unwelcome by her
but repellant, she wants nothing
to do with her descendants

for we're all the fruits
of a husband who turned on her
and though she'd not been
an angel, her behavior
did not warrant rejection

yet she in her turn
rejected each of us for even
less, just for being --
it seems sometimes deep hurt sets
an unreasonable pattern

and so here I am harboring painful knowledge
I choose not to share with this loving young boy

for fear of disbelief? maybe, but more certainly
I don't want to risk this story line continuing

JUST HANGIN' ON (photo) & THE SACRIFICE (dream tanka series) by Roswila

THE SACRIFICE

if those in power
find out we've got the little
monkey-like alien,
trouble, even to the death,
will be our middle names

we hurry to put
the sweet male creature safely
away in hiding
yet we can't keep him from hearing
about this danger he presents to us

and when he does
he immediately starts to morph
into female form
though this is years earlier than
he'd normally make the shift

it seems the powers
that be could not care less
about aliens
of the female persuasion
only the males get their goat

and our morphing friend
is willing to take on the
maternal phase years
too soon to protect us,
its strange human allies

as I watch her curl
up quietly in the nest
she's finished building
I pray that our human friendship
proves worthy of her sacrifice

THE WAY (photo) & THE DREAM OFFERS AN ANSWER (3 dream tanka w/4 2-liners) by Roswila

THE DREAM OFFERS AN ANSWER

my question answered:
an all too familiar dream
scenario rises
of another flight of stairs to climb
without knowing where they lead

a soap opera
star -- that much married one
from her now defunct show --
has even dressed to the nines
to accompany me

she doesn't stay
beside me long, though -- simply
vanishing, poof!
I'm also surprised to be able
to go on bending my arthritic knees

so, on I go -- rare for this sort of dream climb --
in bright daylight and between clean white walls

and unheard of, this flight's not broken or unfinished,
but extends to a landing with an open doorway

while just to the side, a tall male acquaintance waits
like a sphinx -- do I trust him? should I turn back?

yet does it really matter who stands this watch?
it's the doorway that beckons me on

[three tanka with four two-liners on a dream of 3-19-15. I incubated this dream by asking just before sleep for comment on my on-going deeply blue mood. (See dream poem of yesterday.) This dream was vaguely lucid as I did actually keep comparing this stairway climbing dream, as I was dreaming it, to the many others I've had over the years. I'm also struck at the contrast between going up in an elevator (the dream of yesterday) and climbing stairs. The former a public vehicle and not under one's control. The latter individual and using one's own power. And the dream poem of yesterday was focused on the past. While today's is about going into the unknown future. The ending reminds me a bit of that famous F.R. Stockton story, "The Lady, or the Tiger?" There's a whole lot more here, but I'll let it rest at this. Photo "The Way" (2-18-10 19927v6) by Roswila]
