END OF THE ROAD (photomorph) & MAKING A MOVE (dream narrative) by Roswila

MAKING A MOVE

all of us -- two men, I, and a vague fourth
person -- pack our personal stuff in suitcases
and bundles in a rush to move out of the place
in which we've been living; our huge, still
back-firing jalopy squats by the side door,
as the other three fill it with the artifacts
of their lives; but I'm not able to finish packing
my entire kit and caboodle fast enough before
the other three take off in the grumbling old car
with its shot suspension, leaving me in the smoke
and noise of its wake, wondering if the three
of them even hear my cries to, at the very least,
wait for me to get in the ancient auto (much less
load all my stuff); the obese guy in the driver's seat,
wearing not much more than his usual impish grin,
suddenly pulls over at a sharp angle with the front
end up on the curb so that the car's all a-tilt
and the stash of suitcases and bundles shifting
with squeaks and shushing; I'm surprised that they
(or maybe only he) had actually noticed I wasn't
on board; I squeeze myself into the car, no longer
sure that this change of residence will be worth
it, not to mention having to abandon most of my
belongings as well, as it's clear they barely have
the patience to let me get on board, and who knows
how rough the trip in this dilapidated car will be,
and yet I begin to enjoy the increasing feeling
of being a rebel, as none of us seems concerned
with appearances or making this move in a more
organized, socially approvable way, only
with going some place new

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

RETURN OF THE SALAMANDER (photomorph) & SKITTERING (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SKITTERING

one of those sweet little lizards ... ooops!
as my American Indian friend recently
informed me ... salamanders crosses my path,
skitter-waddling even faster off to the left
when it becomes aware of me ... ah, I always
recall you, Anne, when one of these tiny twig
brown creatures surprises me; in your love
of nature they were way at the forefront
of your caring and I would hope still are,
wherever you may be, still in assisted care
as your mind continues to skitter away in fits
and starts; and I wonder have you tried to write
poetry again in the years since I've last seen you,
our friendship obscured even before it was clear
you needed too much care to live independently
any longer; I sometimes think that had I realized
pieces of you were shearing off inside you, our
friendship might have survived a bit longer;
but all I saw were the shadows cast ahead of
your changes and took your angers personally,
and with a heavy dose of defensive puzzlement:
what did I do wrong? or with a sad and irritated
hurt: what is wrong with you? as I now stare after
this salamander, this shy reminder of the love you
have brought to this life, it quickly darts out
again and as suddenly scuttles back into the dark
bougainvillea shadows, as I finally accept, with
a bittersweet sigh, that we both did nothing less
and nothing more than be who we were

FISHING IN THE LIGHT (photomorph) & ON THE FLY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON THE FLY

I should be grateful for "catch and release,"
you say? be thankful you didn't keep me on
the hook just for the fun of it? and show me
off to your friends: "See, she's as stuck on me
as a woman can get"? hells bells, man,
fuggedaboudit!

I've never liked dangling in the wind, my feet
way above the ground, not knowing when the line
by which I hang might unravel or break, fearful
a pair of strong arms won't be there
to prevent a shocking plummet

no, I'm what could be called "a keeper," maybe
not the gem that expression implies but certainly
worth enough to take hold off and not let go, not
toss back as you hope that the fresh swirl
that's caught your eye already in the glittering
offing, will accept another of your on the fly,
oh-so-manly hooks

[non-dream free verse poem written 8-29-18. Not sure quite why this one came up at this time. It's pretty much an old issue, but maybe it's a warning or a wake-up call. Or even (and this is most likely) unfinished business. Photomorph "Fishing in the Light" (9-15-16 004v4) by Roswila]
