DAYBREAK (photomorph) & SMALL SUNS (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

SMALL SUNS

these children, you see,
are my responsibility,
not by birth but by life's
many happenstances

so please pardon me
if I rush by as I go about
my many errands
I'm now off to do my banking
a long tiring excursion

but I must exchange my wrinkled money
for handsful of shiny golden doubloons

I like for all that I spend on my kids
to shine brightly like small suns

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

ENJOYING THE FALL (photo) & GRAVITY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

GRAVITY

how did she ever
wind up here again, she thinks
as she looks at the night ...
that first leap from this high window
to outside the front gate had been easy

maybe gravity will release its grip this time, too,
letting her land with as little impact as a dust mote

she puts her focus
on the same goal beyond the gate
and takes the leap
the night air sings past her ears
as she falls gracefully feet first

but something pulls
her off course to deep inside
the gate's dark compass,
though the landing's soft as before
and the hushed garden welcoming

she's grateful for the easy alighting; nevertheless
she worries: what if that huge rod iron gate's locked?

and what if gravity won't release her to make
the long climb up and over its stern lattice

ah, well, there's a considerable walk just to reach
the gate, and it's a beautiful autumn midnight

she tosses her worries behind like her long braid
is it the moonlight that smells so sweet?

DISPERSAL (photomorph) & A GAME OF MARBLES (dream tanka w/2-liner) by Roswila

A GAME OF MARBLES

the night's dreams roll on
like glass marbles skittering
across a table,
making only pale impressions
of shimmer in fast motion

each waking reveals the milk glass marble
of a full moon, its own roll in blurry slo-mo

[a tanka capped by a two-liner on a dream of 11-5-14. Very frustrating night of dreaming and waking. Waking periodically is normal for me. But not the inability to recall any of the many dreams I knew I was having. Though I have noted my dream recall can be damped a bit under a full moon, and it's just coming full today. MOON ROSE (photomorph) & ALL SHALL BE WELL ... (dream tanka series w/2 liner) by Roswila

ALL SHALL BE WELL ...*

one:

I've lost my purse ...
again! I really won't miss
anything in it
though what a chore to have
to call all the credit card banks

two:

as I stand to leave
the subway car I grab for
my tall walking stick ...
oh no! I left it at home!
I wobble, my friend reaches out

three:

the opening night
for my family's new home-
cum-restaurant
by the sea, is here at last
but the cleaning's still not done

I mop the muddy
parquet floors, determined
they'll shine again
under the bright moonlight
coming in through the bay windows

maybe I should ask Mother what time we open
I'd love not to rush this pleasant rhythmic work

INTERSTELLAR (photomorph) & THE FUTURE OF DREAMS (5 non-dream scifaiku) by Roswila

THE FUTURE OF DREAMS
(Five Scifaiku*)

earth's refugees
they ride starships
we, dreams

* * *

centuries
of frozen dreams
haunted cryo-ship

* * *

invaded by bodies
the dream ship fades
lost in space

* * *

strange dreams, these,
the elders say they are of earth
genetic flotsam

* * *

seventh generation
dreams of earth burn away
under the constant sun

[five (not dream based but about dreaming) scifaiku written at separate times in 2007 or earlier, and posted here in slightly different form in April of 2007. *A scifaiku is a haiku-like form with a science fiction, fantasy, horror or cosmologic theme. I came across these when looking for something to post today as my dreams from last night have not generated any writing. They are strung together in an ever so vaguely sensible way: from leaving earth, to the trip across space, to life on a new planet. Which all together can be read as a "life of the human species" sci-fi story. And I now realize is a sort of hyperbolic recapitulation of my own life so far. PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

THE SPELL IS CAST (photomorph) & WITCH OF THE WILLOWS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WITCH OF THE WILLOWS

From the heart of meditation’s flame
I transport to a treasured time,
a childhood place
where ancient powers gather
like underground water
welling to pools on the leaf strewn surface.

And the willows, how they writhe in the winds
that bring the fall rain.
The sweet hair of branches serving as reins
as I ride a storm willow,
and the pools draw nigh to silver lakes.

How the quiet delight of awakening power
climbs up my spine like wax up a wick
then bursts into flight, an impossible flame
on the whipping wet wind.

I give warning to all of my impending arrival,
bare back and bathed in the aura of fire,
dripping with silver:

I, young sister of Hecate, and Witch of the Willows,
will someday change the world!

[non-dream poem written in the late 1970's, based on a childhood memory (previously posted a few years back). Ah! Would that I were still able to access such grand and energetic optimism. Failing that, still be able to climb stairs in lieu of trees. But I'd settle extremely happily for walking without a cane. Changing the topic: I always choose the photo to go with the poem. Today I've done the reverse. I wanted to share the morph I made of this selfie I took in my Halloween witch hat. It's called "The Spell Is Cast" (11-1-14 010v5). Click here to see another version along with the unfudged original pic and one with a different focus altogether. Photo & Poem by Roswila]

FITTING IN (photomorph) & ON MATCHING UP (dream tanka series w/dreamku) by Roswila

ON MATCHING UP

our President,
backed by a secret service guard,
stands at the kiosk
at first I figure even
Obama needs cash sometimes

then I realize
he's at a public computer,
keyboarding away
doesn't he know he's exposed,
what a risk he's taking?

but I have no time
to worry further as I'm late
for work already
and have yet to get dressed
for a day in the office

as if by magic
I'm back in my small bedroom
rummaging quickly
through my crowded clothes rack
for something proper to wear

what fits doesn't match
the color of my shoes, what
complements them
is still way too small or short --
whatever will I do

easier by far
to believe that appearances
really don't matter
but I know from long experience
how dangerous that can be

only the innocent
or deluded buy into it,
the rest try to match up
