WAVING SO LONG (photo) & THE SUNDAE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE SUNDAE

a clattering orgy of throwing away:
candies, ice cream, any-and-everything
sugary, into large garbage barrels behind
the endless row of harbor side restaurants:
the most spectacular, a huge can of chocolate
syrup without a lid thudding into the biggest
receptacle, splattering its gooey contents all over
the addictive sweets already crowding the barrel
and dripping in dark rivulets down the fat
curvature of its outside: a massive and
gloriously messy good-bye sundae

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-28-17. I've been working at losing the very last of my "avoirdupois" for a few weeks now. A journey that started back in 2001 at 356 lbs. During the past 100+ lbs. loss, I have been considering myself an addict and have found much of 12 Step philosophy and approaches to be supportive. But I've never (to my conscious recall, of course) had a dream quite like this one. It carries such a punch that I'm also sure it has to do with much more in my life than food issues. It makes sense, as I have not ever believed the substance is addicting but something in ourselves, a combination of our brain chemistries and psychologies. And I have noted my other addictive tendencies for some time now. (Not to mention that I quit drinking 35 years ago when I somehow managed to read the handwriting on the wall. There must have been some sort of spiritual intervention. As otherwise I can't see how I would have wanted to do it, much less actually done it.) However, this dream having been couched in food terms does make it largely about what I'm doing at present: approaching the slimmest I've been in almost 40 years. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

STRUGGLE TO THE LIGHT (photomorph) & ONE RAINY NIGHT (dream-based prose poem) by Roswila

ONE RAINY NIGHT

a small group of us meet up in a nighttime street,
there's a cute, rather young new guy in our midst,
I can't believe that there's a spark between us;
it gets late and we each head for our homes;
he stops me, putting his arm gently around me,
then pulls me closer, bringing his face to mine,
a kiss? I think, but, but ... yes, a soft little kiss;
I return it gently, how delightful, but that's it (sigh);
as he heads for his home, I stand alone in the night;
my own home's a long way away, and rain's coming;
I look for shelter, a place to sleep away the night,
all I can find is an empty storage box/room
that's leaky and very cold, though I consider it;
the young guy returns with his father and a friend;
the father's reneging on some show business deal,
backing out and leaving the young guy high and dry;
the young guy, his friend and I try chasing him down;
a festival parade has filled the nighttime street
which the father enters and disappears into;
I'd like to enjoy all the soggy costumes and hoopla
but we need to call the young guy's father to account;
determined to collar the faithless, fleeing father
(whom I begin to suspect is actually luring us on)
we three struggle through the length of the parade
like salmon fighting their ways up stream

HUNT FOR THE SUN (photomorph) & MEN ON THE HUNT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

MEN ON THE HUNT

why do so many men seem
attracted to her at a distance,
their attention clearly hooked
when their eyes meet, but once
they're in a little closer lose interest
(is that ancient jealous god she can't
even see anymore, still hovering
at her shoulder?) and why, oh why,
do they move in further
only for the kill,
not for the kiss

LEONINE THIRST (photo) & THE THORN (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE THORN

he calls out the names of Runes
only after I've already moved far on
through the chilly evening

if he wanted to connect, to touch
in some way, why didn't he just talk
to me, rather than toss these ancient
words behind me in a hail
of unclear meaning

at which thought the last Rune name
lands on my ears: "Thurisaz," The Thorn,*
and an association instantly rises
that, oddly enough, it's pointing to
a need, as if he's the hurting lion
and I'm supposed to be Androcles**

and I think, ah, if only it were so simple,
I would brave this lion's maw anytime
to try to remove whatever thorn
it is he bears

but life is not a myth, nor encompassed
in a Rune reading, and here, once again,
he's let me pass on by, as I wonder if
this thorn of my own, rooted beside
my heart, will ever be extracted

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-25-17. * About Thurisaz. **In the myth, Androcles is a runaway slave, who has the courage to remove a thorn from the paw of a lion. The lion is befriended and later when they meet up again, the Emperor is so impressed with the power of their friendship that he frees Androcles. BTW, I've been pulling a Rune a day for some time now to refamiliarize myself with them. Yesterday I forgot to pull one and had this dream last night still not knowing I'd forgotten to get a daily Rune. Then, as I started working on this dream poem this morning, I discovered my forgetfulness and realized that here in this dream was my Rune for yesterday! HER MIND GOES UP IN SMOKE AGAIN (photomorph) & IN HER BED (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IN HER BED

the vivid imaginary affair
she's had with him
has gone on so long
that should they finally
hook up in reality
it might turn out to be
a rather discomfiting awakening:
who's this stranger in her bed?

AT CROSS PURPOSES (photomorph) & THE HOARDER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE HOARDER

he walks in the large room ... omigosh!
has he become a zombie? I mean, literally,
as on all those horrific T.V. shows, but for real?

as I stand worrying silently, he orders me
over to him and as always I don't even
think to say no

up close he looks just as unwell, drawn,
pale, vaguely sweaty, his beard
days old, I'm surprised
when he pulls me to him
that he doesn't smell days unclean

and as ever I have no idea
what he truly wants of me
other than to jerk my strings;
even more troublesome, what do I
want from him beyond satisfaction
of the intense and nigh on to suffocating
sexual yearning I've suffered
for him for so long

my women friends stand
a short distance away
watching us with their usual
curiosity, and I briefly wonder
what they will turn this incident
into later in their gossiping,
much less what I will
make of it

he continues to hold me close
and far longer than he ever has,
then takes my face between
his large hands and kisses me softly
... shit! even under these conditions
my body responds and I crane
to get as much of myself flat against
him as I can, to feel all his maleness
against me, especially those crown
jewels that have tortured my dreams
and fantasies for so long

but he won't even give this much
more to me, just as he's never fully given
me his physicality, only teased me with it,
this ailing monarch still jealously
hoarding his power to please

I struggle to smother my sexual arousal,
thinking no matter how hard I try
this man is never dead to me,
but quickly squelch that thought,
since the way he's looking today
the grave may be exactly where
he's headed all too soon
and way too sadly

BARRING THE WAY (photomorph) & LOOKING (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

LOOKING

tiny bird at the top
of one of the few bare
branches in the lushly
leafed bush, tweeting
a sporadic aria
silhouetted against
the powder blue sky:
see-me see-me
Look-at-me! Look-at-me!
LOOK!
Don't-see-the-nest!
Don't-see-the-nest!
DON'T!
