ANOTHER SPRING (photo) & "old, young ..." (non-dream monoku) by Roswila

old, young, in between the wind plays with them all

[non-dream monoku (one-line haiku) written 4-14-18. Had no viable dream recall (well, maybe an extremely vague fragment to work on later), so decided to choose a new pic and write a 'ku or tanka to go with it. And here 'tis. BTW, I also just worked on this photo, that was taken only a few days ago. So both are really fresh (at least in the sense of being new, if not unusual or different :-D). There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

A SLEW OF PHANTOMS (photomorph) & TOO MUCHNESS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

TOO MUCHNESS

youch! the truth crashes into her
like a wrecking ball, taking her breath
and hard-won composure away:
she really is "too much" ...
but, whoa!
wait a minute, she thinks,
as breath returns
with a modicum of focus, maybe
this just means she should seek out a
"too much" man (there has to be at least
one such creature in the slew of men
around here) who will not only be able
and willing (you should pardon the pun)
to handle her, but grasp with his intuitive
heart whatever may be the creative
possibilities of their complementary
"too muchness"

[non-dream free verse poem written 4-12-18. ). Sigh, seems I'm sort of "fated" right now to not even vaguely like the poems I'm producing. Because today's is another I'm extremely ambivalent about (most of the extreme-ness landing on the negative side). Photomorph "A Slew of Phantoms" (12-30-17 009v12d) by Roswila]

HEART BUD (photomorph) & I HATE TO ADMIT IT (prose poem on a dream) by Roswila

I HATE TO ADMIT IT

yes, I really hate to admit it
(being this secretly cynical old woman
I've become) but this only weeks old
kitten is adorable; I even let evidence
of this affection slip from me on a
soft "awww..." as I hold the wriggling
black and white challenge to my breast,
hoping my heart's steady beat will calm
and reassure it; the kitten slows its
vigorous leg shoving and back arching
long enough to look right at me: oh!
its blue-grey eyes are clouded over,
does it even see me? I begin to talk
to it, really more a shushing, and then
find myself singing, hoping sound
will soothe where touch and sight have
fallen short: ♪ shoo, shoo, shoo-la-rack,
shoo-la-rack-shack, shoo-la-babakoo,
♫ when I was a Sally Sally beel ...
come bibble in the culsac Laurie ♪

[prose poem (?) on a dream of 4-9-18. The nonsense (phonetically written) lyrics at the end are from an old Irish song called "Shule Aroon" -- and I was singing it to the kitten in the dream. These lyrics, and other versions, are how the original Gaelic words evolved once here in America. I gather there are various versions and that it's sometimes sung to other tunes. The version I know does not exactly match what I found today online, but it's clearly the same lyrics. The original Irish translates to a sad song, and the tune (the one I learned many, many years ago) is like a sweet lull-a-bye. BTW, that question mark after "prose poem" at the start of these comments is because I don't feel I can call it a dream narrative, but I'm no more comfortable calling it a free verse poem. So, once again, I settle (not very happily, and probably not very accurately) for calling it a prose poem. Photomorph "Heart Bud" (1-18-18 006v4b) by Roswila]

EMERGENT PATTERNS (photo) & ON PATTERNS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON PATTERNS

startled, she is, she is, when
it hits her she'd rather search out
patterns already there
than make them on her
own

it's such fun, she points out
to herself, to herself,
to point out the repeats and mimicking
shapes, and the rare surprise of a
twist

(all this said sotto voce,
to herself, can you imagine that?
to herself in that inner voice of hers
to her own inner
audience?)

and, better yet, she goes on,
she goes on whispering in her busy mind:
I'd like it even more, to simply be aware
of my place, my place
wherever it may be in the weave
of life at any odd
moment

to be clear, she quickly notes
(still in that imagined sotto voce),
I'd rather see, rather see
what I bring to this art;
and, yes, it is an
art

for where was it I read that we
are all deeply creative? as deeply
creative I'd say, as silk worms who
extrude both the threads
and the patterns
of their own
lives

all while being held, being held
and invisibly shaped by
that larger pattern
in which everything's
cocooned

ah well, come to think of it, she
thinks, she thinks, I'd rather just keep
moving forward, attending to the
needs

of each moment as it unfolds, unfolds,
and let any emerging pattern be a
surprise, when, and if it
will, if it
will

[non-dream free verse poem written 4-9-18 (posted 4-10-18). Another poem (like one posted here the day before yesterday) that I'm not all that content with. But it'll do on a rushed, blue mood day. And later on I may see what it needs. Hm, seems there's a pattern emerging of greater than usual dissatisfaction with my writing .. and, honestly, not only with my writing. DOUBLE EXPOSURE (photomorph) & FAITH (non-dream senryu) by Roswila

FAITH

close community life:
we walk a labyrinth whose
center stays unreached

[non-dream, (kinda, sorta) senryu written 4-9-18. Senryu are kissing cousins of haiku, though they are usually humorous and/or about human foibles. So this is really more (maybe) an aphorism written in the senryu (and haiku) form of three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. One also would not normally title either a senryu or a haiku, but this one needs it (IMHO) to have a chance of being grasped. This amount of explanation for such a little piece probably means it's not worth much to anyone but it's mother... :-) BTW, it was written sitting in the shadows of a wonderful old tree, looking out at a sunlit, round labyrinth laid out in stones (some painted in various patterns and colors, and some not), each about the size of a small loaf of bread. COSMIC WINDS (photomorph) & I WILL NOT GO THERE ANYMORE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

I WILL NOT GO THERE ANYMORE

I will not go there anymore

no, won't even try that ever again

and don't think I could go there now
if I should be daft enough to give it
another thought

most things have only one time,
one place, one hook-up
that might succeed

yes, I know, all you and I have left
(hell, ever had) is for you to be the flame
to my dazzled moth, but only after I've
finished exploring this wide, deepening
night on my newly unfurled wings

the likelihood of this just released
moth, whose iridescent sails bear
brilliant eyes, ever returning
to that isolating cocoon
... well, you get my drift, don't you?

there are universes to explore, in which
(never fear) you will still be burning
at my back like old Sol in the far
Milky Way, and to which,
when I am ready, I will give over
at last to the cosmic winds,
and sail into the heart
of your fire

[non-dream free verse poem written 4-5-18. Been working at this poem quite a bit, and it still doesn't feel quite "right." Maybe it's one of those that won't fully manifest until I've actually posted it. Yeah, that happens. I'll put up a poem I'm not sure is "here" yet, then see it a few days (or even weeks or months) later and it will hit me what's missing or off about it. As it is now, it gives me a little image indigestion: that attempt to interweave a moth, a sailing ship, and cosmic travel ... :-D Photomorph "Cosmic Winds" (6-28-09 2988v9) by Roswila]
