REACHING FOR THE SUN (photo) & "what evaporates..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

what evaporates
as my long hair air dries?
water, clearly
but something else lifts with the wet:
a rather sticky habit of negativity

[non-dream tanka written 5-18-19. No great shakes, and really more a hope that negativity is evaporating … at least for now, BWG (big wry grin). Photo “Reaching for the Sun” (9-8-09 6690ev2[3]) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

HER BRAIN ON BELIEF (photomorph) & BELIEF (non-dream mixed format poem) by Roswila

BELIEF

holding her hot, tear
wet face in her cold hands:
morning prayer,
nay, petition of any god out there,
though she has no belief one even exists

and yet what does believing, or not, matter
anymore (if it ever did) in her small life,

lived as in a trashed doll’s house: far better
she wipe her face and start coping with the day

[non-dream tanka with two capping 2-liners, written 5-17-19. There’s a hidden reference in this to my actual rooms. They are very small and I’ve somehow managed to stuff them. Presently, I’m doing my damnedest to sort everything and get rid of as much stuff as possible. In this process, I have piles of things all over, only some of them neatly in cartons, and all awaiting final determination. To my eye, my space looks rather trashed (or at the very least, as if I’d only moved in a few days ago). I’m also embarrassed to admit there is a definite association to the Ibsen play “A Doll’s House.” It’s pushing me to acknowledge a sort of “faked” child-like neediness with which I’ve faced many of the issues in my life. As to having a spiritual belief: that’s been a difficult issue I've gone back and forth on all of my life. And that painful struggle doesn’t look to be easing in old age. HOT MESS (photomorph) & THE REVIEW (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE REVIEW

the dance rehearsal
hall is filled to capacity
with cast members;
I’ve arrived from the future to view
the first recording of a famous song

actually, the most
famous and beloved song ever sung
by Elvis Presley --
go know there’d been all this unclarity and
zealous squabbling involved in its creation

will they ever smooth it all out into
the incredible hit it is in my day?

Elvis listens to
each cast person’s thoughts and needs,
almost dancing as
he directs and considers, wandering
among these many anxious folk

something’s still missing
that’s in the completed hit song I
recall from the future,
and here it comes in the arms of a
young techie: an adorable toddler

her hair is curly,
a bright auburn, and as the cliché
goes: lights up the room,
but even her presence doesn’t pull
this puddle of loose ends together

it seems there’s truly
no going back, no getting a private
re-viewing of a
special scene, much less the fixing
of a massively messy one

each moment comes around only once
and we do best to live it as it does

[tanka series with two 2-liners on a dream of 5-15-19. I should mention that I’ve had numerous Elvis dreams over the years. He’s always – in one way or another – some aspect of my father (who was a handsome, troubled singer/actor with blue eyes and dark hair that was really a natural medium/light brown). I suppose another way to phrase one part of this dream’s message: leave the past to the past. There is more to this dream than that, but I’d have to go on for too long. And my plate for today is very full, so I’ll leave my comments at this. Photomorph “Hot Mess” (3-28-17 2656v93[2]) by Roswila]

GET A GRIP! (photo) & LOCATION (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

LOCATION

it’s not a secret
place to the masses who hide here
but the catch? we each
wear a unique mask to avoid capture,
masquerading as something else

what good, then, that we know our location in time
and space, when we can never know each other

[a tanka and capping two-liner on a dream of 5-14-19. This is an odd little dream. The more I fussed at the poem on it, the more it evolved. As if it were a living thing. Hm, that doesn’t really say what I mean. Especially as almost all my artistic efforts evolve in some way. Maybe it’d be closer to the experience to say the dream unfolded new tentacles as I wrote about it. As if it had been holding itself close, and the writing required letting go of that grip.
😊 And, in a way, that’s just what the poem above is addressing. Photo “Get A Grip!” (5-27-17 018) by Roswila]

PIECES OF A BROKEN HEART (photomorph) & TWO TENDER IMAGES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

TWO TENDER IMAGES

Dream One

hugging a dark horse’s large warm head
to my breast to calm him I worry
if I’m standing at an angle
that will allow him to stay in motion
while I caress him (a challenge
to be sure), even as he huffs
softly and gently against me
like a heartbeat at rest

Dream Two

the sweet adolescent girl who’s so
anxious to help me save the bees
offers me advice on what to feed them
(which I had already begun to do
based on past knowledge),
then she starts teaching me how
to speak the bee language,
syllable by vibrating syllable …
should I tell her that I already
know how, interrupting her
evocative, accidental song?

[free verse poem on two dreams of 5-12-19. Given my recent dreams and daytime mood, I was surprised when I recalled these two. They both offer caring advice in a very welcome way when I've been feeling helpless/hopeless. The first seems to be addressing calming myself, especially given what agitation does to my body. The question/advice: How best to calm myself so that I am able to be more active, “to stay in motion.” In fact, as I typed that I thought “being in motion more often will be calming.” The second dream’s bee imagery led me to realize I need to start taking B-Complex vitamins again. I’d stopped a few months ago due to the expense. I take quite a range of supplements and I’d hoped the (rather sparse) B’s in my multi-vitamin would suffice. But as soon as I recalled these bees, I thought of B vitamins. So, I’ve ordered them again. The girl is also a jam-packed image that I won’t go into here. Suffice it to say, her desire to help is heart-warming. And here we are, back to that first dream’s ending. Photomorph “Pieces of A Broken Heart” (5-27-17 018v3a[3]) by Roswila]

DIAMOND DIG (photomorph) & PRECIOUS (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

PRECIOUS

from all the way down
there on the baseball diamond
he recognizes me,
his old (in both senses of the word)
friend who’s deeply proud of him

then he hails me, gesturing insistently that I
come down from the stands to be with him,

to be at his side as he’s being honored …
and giving me a gold medal of memory

[a tanka capped by two 2-liners on a dream of 5-11-19. A rather too precious dream, ey? Diamond? Gold? Medal?
😊 I have chased down the sources of the metaphors here. Mostly “day residue.” And no great insights arising from them so far. It seems to be basically a simple wish fulfilment dream. Photomorph “Diamond Dig” (Old Pix 6-22-09 2656v9h[3]) by Roswila]

THE EMPRESS [III] (from The Taiga Tarot) & THE DOOR IN THE SKY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila)

THE DOOR IN THE SKY

my first door in the sky!
I recall one beneath the sea,
the water supporting and furthering
the muscular struggle even approaching
it required of me, but there’s nothing
here to help me, simply the cold blue air
through which each effortful stroke
of my arms and legs slices instantly,
moving me not one whit closer
to the door, this intensely compelling
hinged portal whose only reason for
being -- at least in the waking world
– is to afford entrance to a different
space … ah! and now I get it (if only
on one metaphorical level) today
is Mother’s Day (bear with me)
and the Hebrew letter corresponded
with the Tarot’s Empress card --
the Archetypal Mother – is Daleth,*
which in noun form means “door” …
so much thinking for a dream in which
I’m itching to be in motion, not just
hanging around -- literally, hanging
becalmed in the air despite my best
efforts -- I could pray for a great wind
to come up and sweep me through that
door, only I’m not only sail-less but
rudderless, not to mention that I’ve rarely
been one to throw myself onto the winds
of change, especially now when body
and mind grow more fragile daily …
and so here I hang, waiting for the
inevitable advent of arthritic and
emotional pain to wake and drive
me through another morning

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-11-19. *All info mentioned here about The Empress card in The Tarot is factual. Image above: THE EMPRESS in my Taiga Tarot deck. This card was designed in 2007 and the deck is still in progress. The curved placement on those stars is meant to represent her traditional pregnant belly. The non-traditional tanka (poem) on this card is also dream-based. To see the few other completed designs I've made for cards in this deck, google for “The Taiga Tarot” blog.]
