BIRTH OF A BLUE (photo art) & BLUE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BLUE

that blue! that exact blue!
no, not powder nor even sky blue,
a deeper but yet not deep (by any means) blue

someone brightly important
long ago also wore a dress in that same
indescribable, in-between deep sky and royal blue

it gripped my child's stare...
ah, yes! no dress, but my painting of a gown
that I'd designed to match my lovely mother's eyes

and here Mama shines again,
resurrected by a friend's blue dress
perhaps to ease the grief of my brother's passing

the son whom she bore
and loved for an all too brief five years
before her own life wound down and out

and I see them enveloped together
by a blue like their eyes in a certain light
joyful at last to be getting to know each other

[non-dream free verse poem of 1-18-14. In memory of my recently deceased brother Russ and our mother Mary (who died when he was five and I, ten.) Photo art "Birth of a Blue" (4-29-12 11818ev2) by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

PICKING UP THE PIECES (photo art) & THE EX-CON (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE EX-CON

the young woman just given
an early prison release
dangles dangerously
from my window ledge

she's shocked and relieved
when I grab onto her hand,
hoping to haul her
back up into my room

for the split second we stare
wide-eyed at each other she almost
plummets the several stories
me trailing like a flag of surrender

but she makes it over the ledge
into the safety of my space, her
sneakered feet thudding softly
on the wooden floorboards

and now where do we two strangers
go from here? I request her name
and address so I can keep in touch

she seems distracted, mumbling
the information impatiently
from across the room

the only thing ringing clearly
through the shadowy distance
she puts between us:
my name is Risk

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-16-14. Believe it or not, this is largely about recent challenges I've had from my emotional world to continuing to eat healthfully. Photo art "Picking Up the Pieces" (4-29-12 11835ev2) by Roswila]

THE CHOICE (photo art) & "the dreams stay..." (dreamku) by Roswila

the dreams stay gentle
unlike their agitated "I"
point and counterpoint

[dreamku on the dreams of 1-15-14. I don't think I've ever had this particular dream experience before. The actions and characters of the dreams were gentle and rather caring, but the "I" observing from within the dreams was upset and tending to judgment. The night of dreams was very much like a moderated debate. Though who or what was moderating I have no idea (and that's only partly a joke). I woke thinking it was a surprise that the agitation of the "I" had not taken over the dreams; that they'd managed to go on their gentle ways. And this very much mirrors what I've begun to be able to do more and more in my waking life: not let my negative and/or painful emotions determine what I actually do. Old family photo & MOVING DAY (dream precipitated free verse poem) by Roswila

MOVING DAY
(in memory of my brother Russ)

back in the day he'd always help me move
to a new apartment (and there were many
moves in those salad days of our youth)

he'd toss boxes and lamps on and off trucks
and U-hauls, lift them into and out of cars,
heft box after heavy box of books up stairs
(of course, there were always stairs)
into the freshly painted space awaiting
what I (and whichever roommate I had
that time) would make of its blank walls
and echoing rooms

even as I now echo in waves, that space
where he'd lived from infancy to white
mustachioed age starkly empty and huge

while I bear each cherished memory
as it flits across the walls painted anew
by the shaking hands of grief

[free verse poem precipitated by a dream 1-14-14. I say "precipitated" because I have not recounted the actual dream here, except in the last stanza and even there only in part. All the rest is actual memory of my younger brother Russ (who passed away 12-28-13). Image: old family photo, taken in very early 1949 in the back yard of our new home in Astoria, Queens, New York City where we'd just moved from Florida; Russ (3 months old), me (five years old), with our mother and father]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

FIRE DANCE (photo art) & HOT SPOTS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

HOT SPOTS

he's still at it, spraying the hot spots
so they won't flare and spread wildly,
even as the entire display spirals
oh-so-slowly into nothingness,
as if down some underlying drain

oy! there's that flare again
within a dried up bush
bent by abandoned decorations,
it must be the cracked clay pot
from which the bush
once grew green, that harbors
the embers in its glazed confines

he's tired of dousing incipient blazes,
and only his fear that they will spread
on the wind beyond this deserted
display before it spirals totally away
keeps him coming back

the stars in the dense night sky
offer a vague chill of disregard
as he returns to his work

when will this burning
be over

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-13-14. There's much more to this dream than this, but one association I have to the "burning" is to the painful inflammation of my arthritic joints. (Which has been aggravated tremendously by recent emotionally intense events in my life. Not the least of which, of course, being my brother's death.) COMETARY (photo art) & THE ANSWER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE ANSWER

the answer to my unspoken question
shines out of his offer to her of a single
food in a small portion:
bring less variety to her table
and not in such whopping portions

she's at the edge of the Big Leap
all her energy tied up in balance
and preparation, even nourishment
from this side affords her less
and less of any true worth

it is she now who will nourish us
her life of willing service -- in all its
shades of vagary and brilliance --
trailing her exit like a comet's tail

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-12-14. BTW, that question in the first line was what I asked my dreams for help with as I fell asleep. That's called "incubating a dream," which almost always gives me some sort of answer. Photo art "Cometary" (10-1-11 11319ev2) by Roswila]

MOON MIMIC (photo art) & AFTER (five non-dream monoku) by Roswila

AFTER

after the close lightning strike lingering chill

* * * *

after the spring storm a pond in the trash can

* * * *

after the thunder storm prayer for breezes

* * * *

after four seeds on the dandelion

* * * *

after all a full moon

[five non-dream monoku, all written in either 2006 or 2007, the first two revised today from their original haiku (3 line) form. I was wandering through my haiku file and noticed for the first time how often I'd started one with the word "after." So I decided to use that as an excuse to string them together for a post. Once I saw them on a screen by themselves (and not lost in a welter of other 'kus), I realized that the first four cover the four seasons. And that the fifth might be seen to cover them all. BTW, they were all written when I was still living in New York City (before I moved to CA in 2008). Photo art "Moon Mimic" (11-9-13 077v3) by Roswila]
