GENETIC CONVERGENCE (photomorph) & IN THE FIGHT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IN THE FIGHT

most of my opponents throughout my life
have defeated me, as will this last one, old age

but this battle will be as all others: life
was in the fight, not in the losing
nor even the occasional win

and I cannot do otherwise now, even
when this last loss is inevitable, an inch
by inch private and hidden slide, or at times
an agony of holding on at the cliff's edge,
or at others, a clashing of staves
in a skilled ballet

after all, the ancient meaning of my surname
"Kelly," that proud flag raised by others
at my birth, is warrior or fighter*

and it's led me forward from the start --
win, draw, or lose; subtle, obvious, or
wild; masked, transparent, or transformative --
I cannot but respond to the call of this spirit,
winding round its chromosomal axis,
an intrepid and wise serpent,

who's rising will only stop, never to rise again,
at the end of this last losing battle with old age,
for its message and my response
has always been to fight

[non-dream free verse poem written 2-22-17. *The surname Kelly is "said to mean 'descendant of Ceallach ' or it can also mean warrior or fighter..." from Wikipedia. Photomorph "Genetic Convergence" (2-13-17 021v2i) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

SKY CLIMBERS (photomorph) & THIS EMPTY SPACE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THIS EMPTY SPACE

no matter my protestations to the contrary,
maybe I do really prefer continuing to act
out this endless balcony scene with you

my painful yearning's certainly sweet
enough and keeps my heart warm
and more importantly safe

and there's no risk of getting closer
and actually touching,
or of having to reveal and
be revealed at deeper
and deeper levels

so this distance might best be left
untraversed: after all, look at what
happened to Romeo and Juliet

far better, then, that I go on milking
this empty space between us
for every poem it's worth

BUSH BABIES (photomorph) & A SHOT AT THE GOLD (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

A SHOT AT THE GOLD

I have not, and might not ever catch
the Golden Ring on this not-so-
Merry-Go-Round of a life

but today on sighting a bush whose shadows
entice a photo or two, I recall crawling
beneath just such a green and twiggy
jumble as a toddler, on an Easter egg hunt

and to my great delight retrieving the most
special of all eggs, the Golden One! for
my colorful woven basket

maybe we only get one shot at the Gold,
and if so, I certainly took mine that day
and ran with it, my basket filled with eggs
of every color in a nest of lavender
plastic grass, swinging from my chubby fist,
to show off to my mother and grandmother
who waited at the other end
of the long green lawn

I don't know why they were so sad
that day, even though they smiled as I
rushed up to them, hoping the Golden
Egg, surrounded by others
in a rainbow of colors,
would cheer them

I can't now recall if it did
but remembering that day slows
my own melancholy spin and I sigh
and stretch, close my eyes, and gratefully
lift my face to the golden orb of the sun

THE GIFT THAT GOES ON GIVING (photo) & "spirited away..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

spirited away
from maudlin inner dialogue:
the call and response
of diminutive sparrows
and tumbling ocean waves

METAPHOR RISING (photomorph) & WHY SHE WRITES (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHY SHE WRITES

imagination's
fighting for her life
again,
will she let it win?
or give in to the pain
we label reality
and let it run her
down,
saber toothed predator
that it is: ah, see, there's
imagination
starting to wriggle its way
out
one more time,
as if to say: "OK, I can't
control content, but I can
reshape 'the real,' and blunt
its biting edges with flashes
of metaphor"
