DARK MATTER (photo) & VAMPIRE JEWEL (dream tanka pair) by Roswila

VAMPIRE JEWEL

it’s almost as rare
for a vampire to father children
as it is for one to
care if his progeny live and this
one makes sure his babes survive

he won’t let them wake
and open their wide eyes while
he escapes hunters,
for only in the pupil’s dark skies
can a Vampire Jewel be spotted

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS): The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, and monoku -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to understand or interpret any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not.

For more in-depth exploration:

THE ALCHEMIST (photo) & SKEWED (four dream tanka) by Roswila

SKEWED

their magazine’s debut
proves to be a surprise:
“New Takes On Tarot,”
all based on their unique
reviews of my designs

the first: Temperance,
a slice of my design brightens
their black and white text
that proclaims “so devilish
at being so good”

then their white lines pour
down, even further veiling
my hazy Moon card,
like right brain perception
raining endlessly

several more cards
appear in rapid succession
ending with The World –
all creatively skewed on top
of my already quirky designs

[four tanka on a dream of 11-29-12. It'll be interesting later when I have the time, to relate to Temperance, The Moon, and The World as a three card Tarot reading. Photo “The Alchemist” by Roswila, this is my Temperance card in a photographic Tarot deck I’ve been developing, The Found Tarot]

CHRISTMAS GIFT (photo) & [Untitled] (dream tanka) by Roswila

[untitled]

the Santa and I
walk in a pair of footprints
that suddenly end
we go on in the curving
snowy path and make our own

[an old dream tanka on a dream from January 2009. Wish I would find that I’m making new footprints. Seems it always turns out to be the “same old, same old” ones I’m following along in, going no place new. I’ll blame this Scrooge mood on the rainy weather. Ah, that’s my wish from Santa this year: that I walk down new paths. Of course, I’d better be careful what I wish for. As the expression goes, I just might get it. Photo “Christmas Gift” by Roswila]

MIXING IT UP (photo) & [a non-dream based monoku] by Roswila

running late     but oh the sun through fall leaves

[a many year's old, non-dream based monoku (one-line form of haiku). We're only weeks from Winter Solstice but I'm in a very fall mood, even though -- or maybe because -- all I can see out my window right now is fog. Photo "Mixing It Up" by Roswila]

LAPPING IT UP (photo) & ON SATIETY (dreamku series) by Roswila

ON SATIETY

she reads Tarot with
an unfamiliar deck and in
very poor lighting
she must lift one card right up
to her nose to see which it is

the tall narrow card
finally yields up its name,
the Ten of Cups,
though from its odd design
it looks more like The Fool

yes, she mutters wryly,
satiety has more than been reached
the cups spill over
it’s foolish to keep trying to
make them accommodate more

she sets the card down
obfuscating limits never
makes them go away

[three tanka and a dreamku on a dream of 11-26-12. It’s not necessary to understanding the narrative, but here’s a little bit of Tarot info for anyone “not in the know.” In The Thoth Tarot deck The Ten of Cups is called “Satiety” and it pictures a stack of filled cups against a solid red background, with more spilling down into them. This has led me to sometimes read this card as saying that one has had enough of some charged situation. Although it was not this particular card I saw in the dream, on realizing as I was dreaming that it was called the Ten of Cups I recalled the name “Satiety.” Photo “Lapping It Up” by Roswila]

AUTUMN'S CAULDRON (photo) & FINDING A WAY (dreamku series) by Roswila

FINDING A WAY

when we finally
break into the children’s room
it’s dark and dreary
little light reaches the dirty
walls or the dead dry plants

and the kids themselves
clearly neglected and uncared for
I fling windows open
as I make plans to change
these deplorable conditions,

especially the lack
of books and learning material –
my friends and I scrape
debris off the walls into
rapidly filling wastebaskets

I’m surprised to find tiny green sprouts at the base
of a dark brittle vine – life finding a way

THE KISS OF THE INFINITE (photo) & NOT A GOOD FIT (dreamku series) by Roswila

NOT A GOOD FIT

I connect briefly
with another like mind –
leaving, she adds that
the Deity we're risking all for
is called by the name Lee Ann

worry twists my relief
at having connected:
it’s inherently
imprecise and dangerous
to name the numinous

it can’t be captured in words and we wind up
bearing the brunt of all ill-fitting labels
