THE JOURNEY

an endless prairie
like a serene golden sea
in the afternoon light
from which a tower
of fire suddenly erupts
spewing clods of earth
that tumble slowly down
through the cool blue air
to land on a forest floor
moonlight lilting
as bull frogs sing
from every shadow
a new path shimmering
like the sliver
of a silken overtone

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

A BRUSH WITH PROTOCOL

it's not permitted
to leave the kitten overnight
in the locked office
but I forgot the carrier
for this high energy cat

and there it sits
cleaning its small white paws
'til they almost gleam
against the rest of its
sleek little black body

I'll have to risk
life and limb, and carry it
home in my arms
I just know it will panic
and I'll bear the brunt of it

and so it goes,
its mixture of fury and fear
impossible to contain
I finally give up, letting
it scramble out of my arms

it glares darkly at me
from across the courtyard lawn
I can't leave it here
and decide to return it
to the office for the night

to my utter surprise
it bounds right over to me
when I call its name,
whether it's short on memory
or long on forgiveness I don't know

I'm just grateful this kitten will be safe
in the office for the night's duration

who gives a fig anyway about office rules?
this little one's safety is more important

NO BRAKES

no hand brakes on the bike!
not broken or ripped off, mind you,
just not designed with them
how could I not have noticed
when I rented this lemon

how ever will I stop?
dropping and dragging a foot's
no option at this speed,
and old fashioned back pedaling
only whizzes my feet backwards

and there's also no horn!
I can't warn other bikers as
I pick up speed down
this beautiful mountain road
in the bright morning sunlight

I'd never have imagined the prayer drying
on my lips: for an uphill turn to slow me down

This one seems mostly to be playing around with the expression "Going down hill fast." :-) Time flies by faster and faster at this end of life (I'll be 71 in January). And there's seemingly no slowing down the progression of my arthritis, nor it's development in other joints, too. (Not even having lost 74 lbs., and continuing to lose.) Yet this was not really a "negative" dream. I was aware of the beautiful day and scenery, even as I concentrated on the considerable challenges of staying on the road and not crashing into other bikers. Oh my, that last phrase "staying on the road and not crashing into other bikers" pretty much encapsulates my approach to life these days. BARE OUTLINES

she looks through the pile
of black and white ink sketches
they're clearly quite old
but the artifacts they're of
are older yet, from ancient times

one drawing stands out:
six nude, large bodied women
lie shoulder to shoulder
in an orderly row
in their long gone bog grave

what deep history
was buried with them, she muses,
did they dance through
their nights, or mourn their ways
slowly to this group burial

something in their shapes
is vaguely familiar ...
ah, they're not Celtic
as she'd first been inclined
to believe, but Tuetonic

she finds this knowledge
an odd sort of comfort
as if for once
her Mother's lineage
has slipped quietly to the fore

grateful for even bare outlines of what has shaped her

three guitarists stroll
through the early evening
strumming softly
their playing wistfully
improvisational

their instruments
light up the soulful song,
each guitar unique:
every surface of the first
covered in vine carvings,

the second, sculpted
out of alabaster,
shines like the moon,
and the last's long languid neck
curves like a golden swan's
