BUILDING LIFE (photo) & WHICH WAY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHICH WAY

getting up in the morning, or for that matter,
going to sleep at night's too often as if boarding
an elevator in a high rise office building and not
knowing which way it's headed: will it ascend on
the next inevitable in-breath to the sky, offering
a freeing perspective on the massive city landscape,
or plummet straight down into the dark and chilly
dumps where all the septic tanks and water pumps
do their gritty work trying to keep the ground
clean and stable beneath the grinding wheels
and trampling feet of the city

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

CORKSCREW PUNCH (photomorph) & THE BOXING GAME (dream based free verse poem) by Roswila

THE BOXING GAME

she keeps trying to fill up the cavernous
space that echoes darkly inside herself,
creaking and threatening to collapse
and take her down like some lost
and lonely spelunker, with
learning how to box

even as she agrees with that persistent voice
in the back of her mind that asks: why should
she now, at this late age and in such physical
decline, take on this humongous task

yet, not only does the mysterious necessity
press itself upon her, leading her to struggle
to complete even one of the many strenuous
lessons she sees lying ahead of her, but
the odd desire to develop this particular
new skill draws her like
nothing else ever has

and so, despite her wobbly balance and aching
heart, she puts her arms and hands, shoulders
and legs and heaving core, into what feels
like the single most demanding and yet
light-filled challenge of her life

RIDING THE WIND (photomorph) & BREEZY KISSES (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BREEZY KISSES

something in me pipes up in a small,
steady voice: yes, it's safe to close
your eyes here, in this now,
in this place; even as the tree above
agrees, shushing softly in the wind
like a loving mother letting her
young daughter know that the danger
has passed at last, while she kisses
her child's tears away with little
breezy kisses

A STUDY IN ROYAL BLUE (photomorph) & "blue mood seeking ..." (non-dream monoku) by Roswila

blue mood seeking my heart in the sky

[non-dream monoku (one line haiku) written 2-27-17. I was looking for something to post this morning -- anything new I have still needs too much work and I'm a bit rushed -- and was surprised to find I'd not used this one yet. I think maybe it just got visually lost in the clutter of three line haiku in my Haiku Master file (:-D). Photomorph "Study in Royal Blue" (6-4-17 024v2) by Roswila]

GOING WITH THE FLOW (photomorph) & WITH-IT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WITH-IT

I can't resist pacing the rhythm
of my walker-aided hobbling
to the compelling bass line
of the hip-hop song blaring
from their speakers

do any of these handsome
young men notice this old woman,
much less catch the irony?

hey, even a broken clock
is with-it
two times a day!

RIDING IT OUT (photo) & HURTS SO GOOD (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

HURTS SO GOOD

sometimes it hurts so good
to bear the sear of yearning
for what I cannot have, to feel that burning
flash of electric constriction in my breast,
that cattle prod shock of pain, or to ride
that manic roller coaster of sobbing
under the hot eye of the sun, clinging
to my own sides hoping when I'm thrown
out this time it will be free of any collision,
any lasting damage, even as that familiar
stitch in my heaving ribs begins
to knot the brokenness
together again

and though you'll probably think I'm crazy
I'll still take all this any day and appreciate
the aliveness salting the mix,
rather than return to that arctic cold
of decades ago, to those years of pacing
a dark and solitary prison cell
of unyielding bone, those years
of being dead and buried,
without ever having died

"BOTH SIDES NOW" (photo) & EPHEMERAL MOMENTS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

EPHEMERAL MOMENTS

sigh ... I knew I should have made notes
for that poem; now, all I can recall is the willow's
leafy shadows covering my forearms and the
backs of my hands like living, breathing tattoos
and how I could almost feel them brushing
my skin, ephemeral moments that no
poem can ultimately pin down
