MEASURING THE SUNSET (photomorph) & VISIT FROM AN EX-LOVER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

VISIT FROM A EX-LOVER

not him, again! and why, please tell me why
I'm welcoming him? and feeling glad to do so?

have I missed being alternately charmed
and criticized that much?

and what he's offering to do doesn't seem
to be anything I've wanted and ever will

I haven't worn jeans or slacks in decades,
so don't need to know my in-seam length

come to that, I can guess it anyway as I still have
long legs, at least that hasn't changed with age

and maybe that's just the dream's point: walk,
maybe even run away from that new man and my

yearning for him, on these long, if unsteady legs,
as if old nick were about to embrace me

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IN A SUNNY PATCH (photo) & THE YELLOW SKIRT (on a dream) by Roswila

THE YELLOW SKIRT

oy! after thinking about him all evening,
he appears in a dream, this new crush
that's weighing so heavy on her

though, as often in dreams, she's braver
than in waking life: she's asked him
to join her at a dinner theatre show

he's not as laid back as usual, sitting very
close to her, while something in his aspect
says this is really more like a date

which is fine by her, for sure, but then
(sigh) a young woman he knows comes
up to them and she begins to worry

after that, he goes to get the bill and hands
it right to her ($149.50!), and she accepts
that it's hers to pay for having invited him

as they drive home, she enjoys his casual mastery
(if you will) at the wheel of the car, 'til he calls
another woman to tell her where to meet him

and her worries about his not being truly
available rise again sharply; to distract herself
she brushes at the folds of her sunny yellow skirt,

wondering at the symbolism of yellow: her long-
deceased mother's favorite color, cowardice,
or, the least disturbing association: friendship

then she notices the hem's getting rather grungy,
she'll have to wash it, further distracting herself
by wondering whether or not the dye will run

the yellow of the skirt fills her downward focus
all the way home, like a blossom that had opened
only to quickly splay out, wrinkled and wilted

TESTING THE LIMITS (photomorph) & VACATION AT THE EDGE (on a dream) by Roswila

VACATION AT THE EDGE

watching the baby boy my woman friend
adopted roll happily around at the edge
of the lake I become concerned

not only does his nickname, Big Ben,
disturb me (he's rather large and heavy
and this could mark him for life), but he's
already earned a reputation in this lake-
side retreat as at least two over flowing
hands of trouble

my friend says (with motherly frustration
tinged by a barely hidden pride)
that she can't keep that two-piece sun suit
on him, that it'll be off in minutes,
no matter how she secures it

he does seem to have a knack for
opening things, I think, recalling our
neighbor's complaints that he raids
their bungalows, scooting away faster
than they can follow, even with stolen
food or some object in tow

yet this would be no cause for worry
were his biological mother not serving
time in jail for a long series
of escalating crimes

but I begin to warm to this big baby
as he lies next to his new mother,
the down of his blonde hair shining,
his hefty limbs quiet for once,
when my stomach sinks at the thought:
what if it's in his genes?

POOLSIDE REFLECTIONS (photomorph) & THOUGHTS ON A WINDY DAY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THOUGHTS ON A WINDY DAY

palm frond shadows shift madly
across a corner by the pool, then over
the water, then back again

like thoughts running lose and wild
they thin, then gather in, they round
and curve, stretch wide for a flicker
then narrow once more in retreat

the rippling pool surface a contrasting
relief of pattern, cracks in the poolside
cement drawing threads of continuity
through the tapestry

as the shadow fronds erratically slip away,
slide back, curl, uncurl, contract, spread out,
knot up, but never quite grasp the pool's
corner from their fickle, mesmerizing
world of only two dimensions

GARDEN DRONE (photomorph) & JUST ONE LOOK (dream inspired free verse poem) by Roswila

JUST ONE LOOK

the old song insinuates itself
into each dream of the night:

"Just one look, that's all it took,
just one look..."*

yeah, that's all it did take and from quite
a distance at that, a chance meeting
of our eyes over the heads of others
milling about in the crowd

our glances might have been missiles
launched from warring countries
that met in mid air exploding each other

but as I now recall, the combustion
was more like fireworks, making a wild
display in mind and body, showering
that night with a sudden re-awakening

all in "just one look," and it wasn't
even our first mutual glance,
simply the first to put spark
to fuse

one that ultimately trailed a sad little
whiff of a warning like the lightly smoky
aftermath of a pyrotechnics show:

you've breathed these ashes before

[non-dream free verse poem inspired by the song I heard/sang all through the dreams of 3-28-16. * "Just One Look," the original 1963 version (written by Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll). It's all I recall of the many dreams I had last night. Photomorph "Garden Drone" (3-28-16 038v2) by Roswila]

SHADOW EYE (photomorph) & "the awning shadow..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

the awning shadow
flits across the blank white wall
a death weighs heavy

AT THE EDGE ... (photo) & THE BEATING HEART (on a dream) by Roswila

THE BEATING HEART

another long hallway! she thinks,
as memories rise of other dreams of walls
close on either side as she walks and walks,
some halls with pictures, others paneled
only with shiny dark wood, and yet others
like this one lined with room doors

odd, though, this hallway has doorways
on only one side, the left, into which
she peers briefly as she passes, and all have
a man embedded -- if you'll pardon that pun,
though it may actually speak the truth --
alone in a silent, deep sleep

in the first she sees a dying man
who's gracefully accepted his fate,
a slight smile almost glowing
on his still handsome face, this is a room
to return to, she thinks, there's such
a radiance here, and maybe he'd welcome
a Reiki treatment once awake

in the next, a seriously ill man, looking
strained and awkward with pillows
plumped in such a way as to hold
his neck at what must be a poor angle,
but somehow she knows he'll recover
from both the strain and the illness,
and given the cards and flowers
around his bed he doesn't lack for friends

the last of many more rooms she peers into
holds the only waking man she's seen:
a celebrity she's never been all that
fond of, neither did she like the famous
character he played many years ago
on T.V., but here he seems warm and
approachable, maybe it's his inability
now to walk that's humanized him

they wind up hugging, his chest bare
and sun-tanned, her cheek and hands
feeling its warmth and the beat
of his heart, as she rests next to him
on his bed listening to his determination
to get up on his own two legs and walk

should she point out what she knows
he's all too aware of: he cannot do this,
and may never be able to walk again,
or should she simply go on listening
to the comforting and insistent
beating of his heart

[on a dream of 3-26-16. Not sure I can explain this so I'll simply say there is something Easter like about this dream. Speaking of which, Happy Easter! Photo "At the Edge..." (3-12-16 009v2) by Roswila]
