DANCE OF THE PAPER TREE (photo) & THE OLD PAPER TREE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila]

THE OLD PAPER TREE*

old paper tree, don't stop writing your stories
against the sky, curled and bent twigs
and branches marking invisible trails
for me to follow and fill in with my own knotted
tales of going on despite little to none of what I
most needed and wanted; I've heard if you give
a chimp a typewriter and let it bang away
for an infinite amount of time it will
eventually produce all of Shakespeare's work;
help me, old tree, to keep writing away until
my stories no longer smack of this emptiness,
this long past painful, self-centered yearning,
and simply dance against the powder
blue sky the way your branches do today
in an unselfconscious tarantella

[non-dream free verse poem written 7-19-17. *The tree was probably actually a eucalyptus, but someone I know refers to this type as a "paper tree," which also has peeling bark. And I like the term paper tree for use in a poem about writing. Though how much longer paper will be all that related to writing is questionable given how electronicized everything's becoming. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

A CHANGE OF SEASON (photomorph) & ON CHANGING (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON CHANGING

as I wheel my walker
around the market, song lyrics
I've never heard before
sung in a youthful male voice
declare sadly: "I'm most frightened
of what I've become ..."

I respond under my breath, hoping no one
will hear and think this old lady's losing it:
"I'm more frightened to have learned
I'm still who I always was"

the sweet smelling rose
in shadow on a chain link fence,
behind, in sunlight,
bird after tiny bird taking
a furious morning dust bath

NIGHT OF THE KRAKEN (photomorph) & SAD TO SEE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SAD TO SEE

I've been dancing with the devil
my entire life and did not know it,
doing the fastest mazurka ever
in order to escape his taloned grip,
sad to see from the forced vantage
of this hobbling slow down into even
older age, that he's the only partner
this aging fool has ever had
and most likely ever will

[free verse poem written 7-12-17. It might add an additional level to this little (so-so) poem) to know that one of my "family" of cards in the Tarot is The Devil. Each card can be attributed to an astrology sign. And The Devil's is Capricorn, which is my astrology sun sign. Cards can also be considered related to a reader via their numbers (in numerology) or to the decan they rule in the astrology chart, and so on. So one winds up with several cards with particular significance. Significance that can evolve even as we do. In this case, though, I was feeling stuck in the unevolved takes on The Devil card and in my life. Though I have to admit I do doubt there ever will be another partner for me to dance with (even if I could now, what with my arthritic knees -- Big Wry Laugh). BTW, there's a little stretch of a pun in the title, as the Hebrew letter often attributed to The Devil is "Ayin," which, in noun form, means "eye." (The 22 Major Arcana cards of the Tarot often have a Hebrew letter assigned to each of them. In learning them, of course, I learned the Hebrew alphabet by heart. And writing this little poem set me off trying to re-memorize those forgotten letters, and their noun form meanings and cards. Good exercise for the old brain, I should think!) WASHING THE SKY (photo) & THE OLD WILLOW (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE OLD WILLOW

fill me up completely, old willow, with your
endless display of dark branches; even as you
crowd every nook and cranny in this sky
clouded with distant wild fire smoke, leave no
room in me, no room at all for the hot haunts
of my life who wring tears out of me until
my agony runs dry and cracks wide open again;
so, quick, fill me up as you do the sky, gnarly,
beautiful old tree, for my attention's already
losing its grip on you

WITHOUT A PADDLE (photomorph) & YEARNING FOR HOME (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

YEARNING FOR HOME

my envy of her, laced with self-pity,
turns the observing dream bitter:

how does she do it?
always land someplace where she's
liked and respected,
a home ground she basically trusts
and in which she has a place

I've never known
what that feels like, having
to furiously
dog paddle as I do just to stay
afloat wherever life drops me

another skill
to add to the list of those
I've never had:
how to find, or even to build
a safe home for one's self
