STAIRWAY HOME (photo) & A MODEST POEM (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

A MODEST POEM
(in memory of Gladys Dorf*)

she nods and softly responds to my inquiry
"Yes, I write, but only limericks..."

"Only limericks!" I say, "they're a challenge,
I've tried them, but between their having
to be funny, and to have a certain number
of lines and rhymes I gave up!"

she looks at me with a gently amused
disbelief, adding "If you want, I'll show
you some of them ... sometime..."

but sometime never did come and now
she's gone and I regret that I only asked
her maybe once more in the years
she was our much loved neighbor,
if I could read a few of her limericks

so, if you ever feel me pushing you,
it's not that I'm a pest by nature,
or nosy, but only that I don't want
to lose out on something wonderful
in you because you are too modest
or shy to share it

[non-dream free verse poem written 8-31-17] *Gladys was a well-loved neighbor in our community. All of the friends we lose from our retirement community leave holes in our lives. The gap Gladys leaves is a big one. Photo "Stairway Home" (8-31-17 001v2) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

NO ADMITTANCE (photo) & BAREFOOT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BAREFOOT

and so the ocean of speech
persuades me I just might
be desirable after all,
I can feel the joy this possibility
brings radiating from me
like a tiny sun,
but sadness instantly douses
this rare happiness: I'm painfully
tired of being teased like this
from a distance,
the chilly surf of words
trailing nothing along with it,
not even a caress
to briefly curl my toes,
stranding me here,
unshod
and still waiting

INCHOATE (photomorph) & IT'S AS IF (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IT'S AS IF

it's as if she's released everything she'd
so desperately clung to believing onto
the unpredictable winds of the world at last,
her fingertips reaching for last light kisses
from mistaken or simply worn out knowing
before letting it all fly away, leaving her
to stand tall at the blue loom
of new skies

AVALANCHE! (photomorph) & ON THE SURFACE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON THE SURFACE

... and, so, she says to me,
envy informing her astonishment
that I could have anything
to complain about:

"But you appear so happy
with the choices you've made!"

I respond carefully,
as if crossing thin ice,
fearing a dunk
into unwanted intimacy:

"Yes, but there are choices
and then there are choices"

What I do not say spirals
briefly in my heart,
like the surface of deep snow
disturbed by a sudden wind:

"Had the price for being with him
not been too high, I would never
have chosen this loneliness"

[non-dream free verse poem written December 1993 with minor revisions 8-17. I've been thinking about this very old poem quite a bit recently. And finally went to the trouble of ferreting out what I recalled was the only copy I had. I remember a female acquaintance saying just what is quoted at the beginning. I don't recall how I responded except that I tried to make it clear that, in my opinion, being OK with difficult choices doesn't necessarily make one happy. That scenario about a man at the end was made up at the time to make my point within the poem. What's eerie is that many years later, it did happen. This is something I find sometimes with my oldest poems: my current life reveals them to have been, in some way, like self-fulfilling prophecies. Photomorph "Avalanche!" (8-15-17 003v3p) by Roswila]
