BUZZ WORDS

sheesh! we've been waiting
on this bus for ages it seems
and now the driver
says to be patient a bit longer
that we'll be on our way soon

but at this point I've
lost all enthusiasm
for the conference
on a new style of self-growth
for which this full bus is headed

I can all too readily imagine what awaits me,
and do so: it all boils down to relationships

not what the buzz words
being taught say, but what happens
unaware between
the attendees and teachers, and
between the attendees themselves

the dark gap between the pretty and harmless pap of words
and the reality of human relationship too much to bear

I rush off the bus
stopping only to get my suitcase
the air seems clearer

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

[dreamku written 2-12-06. This was actually written before I developed the dreamku form so is more aptly called a dream haiku. But, hey, small (pun intended) difference. It was also one of the first posts to this blog, way back in 2006. I was scrolling through my haiku master file for something to put up today and it just jumped out at me. MY CUP SPILLETH OVER (photomorph) & FUJI WARA (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

FUJI WARA*

I stand at the edge
of the building roof, looking out
over the city
when I sense someone behind me
I turn and there he is: Fuji!

my old friend Fuji,
whom I'd all but forgotten about
since we'd not met up
in many years -- we rush together
but stop short of embracing

the attraction between us as strong
as ever, as is our hesitation

still, it's so good to see him
I'm sure I'm radiating all over

and he looks equally pleased
most of his delight in his bright eyes

his last name pops to mind: Wara, yes,
that's it, I say, rolling the "r" on my tongue,

like a bullroarer** it buzzes with promise
as if he'd heard it, too, he embraces me at last


[a mix of tanka and two-liners on a dream of 8-19-15. *There is an old Japanese last name of Fujiwara, but it was clear in the dream that these were first and last names. On Googling today I found out that in Japanese fuji can mean "a man of a certain stature." Wara shows up in many languages but the one that really hit me is said to be an "aboriginal" male name meaning "man of the water." Well, put together those two name meanings lead me to The King of Cups in The Tarot: "...the King of Cups is an indication that you must create balance in the realm of the emotions. The King of Cups represents compassion; one of the most powerful and beautiful qualities of the human spirit. Ask yourself, “How can I develop a stronger awareness of the unconscious without being overwhelmed by its power? AT THE CROSSING (photo) & DOES VERBIAGE RHYME WITH GARBAGE? (dream tanka series) by Roswila

DOES VERBIAGE RYHYME WITH GARBAGE?

as the other two
old ladies and I start to cross
the suburban street,
I see a couple of young men
harassing woman not far from us

the other two gals
are a little ahead of me
and in danger
of also being verbally
accosted by these dark youths

I tug at their arms
pulling them back to stand
close by my sides,
whispering, play dumb, like you
don't speak any English at all,

and as if you're
a bit stupid -- then they'll leave us
alone, for they never
act out, but get their kicks solely
from flinging scary words around


[tanka series on a dream of 8-18-15. At one level this dream is about a kind of thinking I can still get into (i.e., those guys are my own thoughts). But what I find more interesting, actually, is how this is the third recent dream in which "playing dumb" is a protective strategy. And that's the level to this dream I will explore more later. SUNDOWN #2 (photomorph) & THE SINGULAR RIDE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE SINGULAR RIDE

he's driving again
which makes sense given I
never learned how to
but this is a dream and why
can't I be at the wheel for once

ah well, that's just a red herring
it's a splendid ride, if about to end

he's approaching
the highway exit ramp
and I hope that he'll
take it at a more moderate speed
than is his normal tendency

lo and behold he slows appropriately
and up the gradual curving ramp we go

(not forced to one side, as I pray
the car won't go up on two wheels only)

the sun's setting light a pastel curtain
drawn on what had been a singular ride

Also, the "he" here was my actual father. I've had other dreams in which he's at the wheel. I have a lot of associations to this dream but will let it speak for itself. SHE SAYS

she proudly shows me
her oval pearlescent locket,
her tiny baby,
she says, lies lovingly
ensconced within it

she doesn't want me
to touch it, so lifts it herself
from over the pulse
at her neck and opens it
for my admiration

but there's no baby
curled up there, I say, hoping
it didn't fall out
she's disbelieving and quickly
checks it over for herself

her sadness nearly
palpable she describes how
it'd been there, sleeping
peacefully, radiating
possibility and promise

a man whispers: she claimed this once before
I say: we all try to get our needs met as we can

THE BLUSHING TREE (photomorph) & ON PLAYING DUMB (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

ON PLAYING DUMB

a lithesome dark gal
stands by the swinging doors
of the old saloon,
agape at the tumult of wild west
cowboys, astounded by the noise

suddenly she's dressed
as a saloon girl, and rushes
into the melee,
but the ethnicity her costume
lends her is clearly not welcome

however, she quickly adjusts, acting as if she can't
understand because she doesn't speak English

this mollifies
the cowboys (with no change in
decibel level or
frenzy of motion, however)
and she freely explores the room

when next she appears
she's still in costume, and on
a high roof's edge
next to her tall blonde boyfriend
with whom she's struggling to talk

but to no avail
he might as well be from
another planet,
he doesn't even react to
the frustration flushing her face

above the angry
rush of blood in her ears
she can hear the fuss
from the saloon below
and decides to return to it

the lesser of two evils, still she'll welcome its tumult:
better any day than this young man's blank stare,

and even if now she'll be the one playing dumb
to protect herself from what's threatening
