BUDDING (photomorph) & THE PRICE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE PRICE

all this stuff I've chosen to take!
yeah, it's lovely it's all being given
away for free -- especially as I can
really use very bit of it -- but how
the blazes will I carry it home?

each time I go over how best
to stack it so that I can heft it,
I swear everything in the pile of books
and shoes and papers and chachkies,
has multiplied magically

I can clearly imagine each item
budding off a complete duplicate
of itself in a mitotic attempt to
frustrate my best efforts to manage
this haul on my own

the donor of these seemingly
living objects approaches me with her
rapidly increasing concern: will I be
taking it all, or not? I assure her
I will take every last item, just not
all at once, then asking if she knows
of any way to curb the tendency
of these objects to multiply, and
maybe even how to reverse the last
two sets of duplication?

to my utter surprise she doesn't even
know what I'm talking about, as if
it's perfectly normal and usual
for, say, a book to shimmy and
shine and ... POP! ... become two
copies of the same tome

I begin to accept that dealing with this
challenging multiplicity is the price
I'm paying this time for accepting
what was touted to be free

MORPHANT MOON (photomorph) & "the half moon ..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

the half moon rides slowly
across the late afternoon sky,
trailing mare's tails:
the distant moon no more stable
than the nebulous clouds

OF WHEELS & DRAINS (photomorph) & WILD MEMORY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

WILD MEMORY

as I wash my hands of it all
in the tiny metal sink,
a loud old rock song
crashes through the air
as if a door had slammed
open onto the past;
I can't help but sing along
in my imitation alto:
"Gitch yer motor runnin'...
Head out on the highway..."
yeah, it's "Born to Be Wild"
for sure that's shaking the walls
of this room:
"Lookin' for adventure...
"And whatever comes our way...,"
the vibrations tickling my bare feet;
Wow! I think, I can't believe
I recall the lyrics to this old hippie
anthem so clearly:
"Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace"

I bounce and bob to the insistent
beat, as I cleanse my hands
until the song ends and the water
runs clear in the sink, leaving
the coral colored soap bar
in the basin, not wanting to get
my hands soapy again to lift it
out; it's where it needs to be
ultimately anyway, just
as I am, my hands clean,
and my heart energized
again, this time by a wild
ride on a memory

[free verse poem on a dream of 10-3-17. I was curious about that color coral, as I so infrequently "see" color in dreams. So I googled its symbolism, finding a very interesting pie-chart that has a particular color for each month. Surprisingly coral is for 9-23 to 10-21. And I really liked the words associated with it (the underlined I see as most applicable to the dream): victory, beauty, physical energy, vitality, vigilance, strength [this was also emphasized in the pie chart], will-power, dedication, and protection. It would take a novella (or at least a very long essay :-D) to go into where all this has taken me in further understanding of this dream. Suffice it to say, it's an even more positive dream than I'd thought before looking into coral's symbolism. BTW, I don't just take "as is," what any symbolic meanings that I find in internet research may offer. To the contrary, I carefully determine how they fit and/or echo a dream's images, and/or my deep associations to the dream. No fit and/or echo, then the meanings of the symbolism I've garnered from the internet aren't applicable. Photomorph "Of Wheels & Drains" (2-19-10 19951ev6f) by Roswila]

CUP OF LIFE (photo) & BEYOND THE RIM (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BEYOND THE RIM

over and over, I show them
how to properly fill
an etched glass
chalice

one, I say, keep looking
at it, letting neither your eyes
nor your inner gaze wander
as you slowly
grasp it

two, hold firm, not tight,
but firm, to its roundness
as you raise it to the light
(even what's not fragile
can be broken by
carelessness)

three, listen to the sounds
that trill through it as it fills
with your appreciative attention
(it's a subtle music but
music nevertheless)

then, steps four and five:
when you're ready, and the cup
full, raise this shapely chalice
slowly to your lips

it's odd hourglass of liquid
exists now only for this: for you
to drink your fill, as the aroma,
sweeter than finest wine,
wafts beyond the rim,
like responding fingers

now, that's not so hard, is it?
did you take notes?
or should I run it all by you
one more time?

OK, first you look at
the chalice you wish to fill,
truly look at it ...

RIPARIAN DREAM (photomorph) & THE CHANNEL (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE CHANNEL

I ask nothing more
of you than this:

when I am dying,
step up to my bed
and lie down beside me

lay your limbs along
the lengths of mine
and feel how
the last of my life
still calls to yours

let us glide for a while
like two rivers
meeting in the channel
they've sculpted,
pouring their lives out
as they wend their ways home

WRITTEN ON THE WIND (photomorph) & LIKE A STONE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

LIKE A STONE

she sits in an old fashioned drawing room,
in a time before electricity would have been
everywhere, candles adding to the already
rather Goth ambiance of the space, which her
black long-sleeved blouse and floor length
skirt fit right in with, though her choice
is based in mourning, not style; she's
shuffling a Tarot deck, sitting at a small,
delicately gilt decorated, dark wood desk,
preparing to lay cards out yet one more
time for a "look see," when a man
enters the room, walking immediately
up to her, squeezing gently by the several
other folk circling the desk and watching;
he's mannerly and even in the Goth gloom
of the room she can see he's nice looking
enough and that he's noticed her soft pale
skin where the collar of her black blouse
lies open, yes, she thinks, there's interest
in his glance; one of the cards then
pops out of the deck as she starts to lay
them out, landing a distance away on
the worn old carpet; the card gets quickly
picked up and passed from person to
person in the circle around her, landing
finally in the new man's hand; he offers
the card to her, a question in his eyes,
and she notes it's The Five of Cups
... ah, she silently and sadly reads the card:
he'll be disappointed, someone else is going
to appear and, for some reason and in some
way, totally swamp this new man's boat;
and that will be that; well, at least for once
it won't be her extended mourning
that sinks a man's interest like a stone

[free verse poem on a dream of 9-30-17. BTW, cards not infrequently just "pop" from a Tarot deck while shuffling it. And when one does, I do read it as having something important to "bring to the table." Also, The Five of Cups in The Tarot does many times mean "disappointment."
