STORMING THE BARRICADES (photomorph) & DEFENDED (on a dream) by Roswila

DEFENDED

my brother's involved in a commercial project
with a shady man, who may also be dangerous

while in my camp (so to speak) two friends of mine
-- an up front youngish female and a mysterious
maybe not even human male -- seem to
have my best interests at heart

she vociferously supports my keeping as much
distance as possible between my brother and me
as long as he's tied up with that devious
(I also keep thinking "tendentious") man,
while my male friend morphs into
his defense mode: long, black, rod iron spikes
extend from his dark head and shoulders,
a threatening and powerful display
if I've ever seen one

I relax enough at some deep level to begin
to wonder, though, if I've yet to clearly perceive
this situation with my brother and his cohort,
much less understand it

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

AFTER THE STORM (photo) & ON THE BALCONY (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

ON THE BALCONY

reading a booklet
of poems on the balcony,
the pool's light
below rippling along
as if entraining the metre

POSEUR (photo) & SEARCHING FOR MODELS (on a dream) by Roswila

SEARCHING FOR MODELS

that long-time frenemy of mine and I
decide to design and produce a series
of large art posters, she'll write the sayings
to go on them and I'll do the art work

I approach the model for the first, a dark
young man whom I've known for some time
who quickly shoves the evidence of his still
active addiction into an end table drawer
(a small black plastic object, that I had
already glimpsed and hoped was not
what I thought it was), I don't have any
success explaining to him that what he does
is truly his own business, that I'm not here
to tell him what to do or not to do,
and that I only want him to be the subject
of the first poster (his intense physicality,
if I could have even partly captured it,
would have made for a knockout poster)

then I find myself before the model
for the last poster in the series:
a young woman whose lightness
may be deceptive, who goes about
whatever it is she's doing (I can't seem
to get even a slight visual grip on it)
with unselfconscious acceptance,
I resist approaching her thinking
that she's simply too good to be true,
but quickly note my flash of envy, as well,
and return to trying to figure out what it is
she's doing, but somehow know that even
if I can figure out her activity I'd not
be able to incorporate it in the poster

I move on to ruminating over each of the subjects
I've tentatively identified for the intervening
posters in the series, deeply saddened
by my failure to recruit the models
I'd wanted for these first two efforts

ENJOYING THE CHASE (photomorph) & THE COMPONENTS OF A LIFE (dream piece) by Roswila

THE COMPONENTS OF A LIFE

first, she gives it a big try
but can't seem to help the young
man understand how to put
his new cell phone together

of course, it's a cutting edge phone,
printed by a copier, and the layers
aren't even in proper order yet,
just cell phone shaped and sized,
flat plastic sheets (and where the blazes
is the front layer of the phone
where all the apps should be?)

then before she can even give him
a few hints (there's the front of the phone,
squashed in the middle of the muddle,
no, that's not it) her questionable new
woman friend starts chasing
mice around again

yeah, they're germy but, hell, so are we
(ever hear how many germs live
in our mouths?) yet she knows they can't
be allowed to set up a nest in her
friend's room, so between the two of them
swinging manic brooms they dispense with the mice

how frustrating! and this is only the start of the day ...
and what was it she was yearning for when she woke?

lost, like the front app layer of that cell phone,
buried beneath the mysterious components of a life

[on a dream of 5-24-16. And, yes, I did dream I'd woken up (that's called a "false awakening"), as referenced in those two next to the last lines. However, the thought in the final two lines was added as I drafted this piece this morning; i.e., I did not dream that simile, just the lostness. EYE ON THE PRIZE (photomorph) & GOT GAME? (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

GOT GAME?

he quits to move away,
while she wins more money
than she can handle
and so she leaves the T.V. show
to her sister and the others

what's puzzling, though, is that a game named "Jeopardy"
continues to inveigle everyone to play to begin with

THE HEART MOURNS (photomprh) & PRAYER TO DEEP SADNESS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO DEEP SADNESS

help me to take you in graciously,
Sadness, as you rise again to fill
another day, for more and more
I question my reflexive urge
to flee at the first sight
of the shadow you cast ahead
realizing I cannot out run you
anymore than I could leave behind
my breath or heartbeat
and sense with a puzzling
certainty that all you truly require
if not an open armed welcome
is permission to simply be:
like a starved stray cat curled shivering
against the ribs surrounding my heart
unsure as yet if it's found a home

[non-dream free verse poem written 5-22-16. Sixth in a "Prayer to..." series, all posted here (Prayer to the sun, Prayer to the Haze, Prayer to Empty Moments, Prayer to An Other, and Prayer to Surrender) so just search by title (search box is in the upper left of this page) if you're interested. VENA CAVA (photomorph) & ON GIVING IT UP (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

ON GIVING IT UP

the cop keeps trying
as I resist, to draw blood from
my femoral artery
hell, he's not a medical professional
but it seems they're short on help

and the thousands
of us gathered in this theatre
all need to be tested
guess it doesn't matter I drew a cop
as I don't trust authority of any stripe

however it seems there's nothing for it but to
give it up and let him plumb my heart's path
