SUCKLED BY THE ELEMENTS (photomorph) & THE CHORUS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE CHORUS

there’s a huge chorus out there in the swaying
surf, singing away as they paddle and float;
a very young, dark-haired man of color, waves
and jumps to get my full attention, his semaphore
inviting me in, off the dry flat beach; around him
in a loose, gently rocking semi-circle, other
chorusers leap like dolphins and as they make
their arc down back into the water, sing out as
if verbalizing his silent call: dive right in!
the water’s fine! nuh-uh, I think, I’ll sing
quietly along with you all from here on the
steady sunset beach, its darkening under my
bare feet like one edge of an old parchment
scroll hung up in the town square
and left to the elements
a long time ago

[free verse poem on a dream of 2-6-20. Not sure if there’s any meaningful connection, but February 6 was the day I moved here to CA, 12 years ago. I also had an intense ocean dream last night. And today is the anniversary of my mother’s death when I was ten. (Sigh, among much else that happened in that dream [poem to follow here tomorrow], I was yearning for a hug from Wonder Woman that I knew I’d not get.) BTW, one association I have to that floating chorus in the above is to the tradition of a “paddle out” for someone who’s passed on. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

GARDEN FROSTING (photo) & SWEET CAKES (dream) by Roswila

SWEET CAKES

they’ve made these delightful little sweet cakes
for certain people; I’m quite surprised and happy
when one of the women involved in the baking venture
hands me the neatly stacked supply, each with its own
tiny printed pink invitation on top of it; she doesn’t
say it but I realize I’m to lift one carefully out of
the stack for myself, leaving the remaining ones
neatly organized so I can readily distribute the rest
appropriately and the recipients can see how nicely
they were presented by the bakers; I’m still very
touched and even more surprised that not only did
they make one specifically for me, but left the
ultimate care and distribution of all the rest
in my hands

[dream of 1-28-20. ACK! I just keyboarded and deleted some lengthy comments/associations to this little dream. Blech! I’m sure the sweet cakes in this dream would taste a lot better than all that ruminating did when I read it over. Suffice it to say it’s a jam-packed dream, both positive and negative, both forward looking and stuck in the past, etc., etc. Photo “Garden Frosting” (7-9-09 3580e[2]) by Roswila]

TIME WAS (photo) & AS TIME GOES BY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

AS TIME GOES BY

his new T.V. show
is a “wow” and he’s even more so
I try to draw my
friend’s attention to my amazement:
all these years and he’s still handsome

but she’s not having anything of it,
not even glancing at my cartoon selfie:

my tongue hanging out
my eyes boggled

no way to share this sweet moment in time:
a mix of memory and ongoing attraction

[a tanka and three two liners on a dream of 2-4-20. I reference both the British T.V. show and the song from “Casablanca” in the title to this. The T.V. actor was a very young version of Chuck Connors (of “The Rifleman” fame). Whom I had a tremendous crush on because he looked so much like a young man whom I’d been mad about in those years. Photo “Time Was” (11-19-14 004v2) by Roswila. And truly this is a pic of a “was” – this memorial garden on our retirement community grounds has not bloomed this beautifully … sigh … since the year I took this photo: 2014. True, there have been years of drought since then, but also neglect. Or to be kinder, no one living here knowledgeable enough and also physically able to take care of roses. I hasten to add, the garden has been looking better the past couple of years with the easing of the drought. And right now, the bushes are sporting total buzz cuts, so maybe the subsequent blooms will be more enthusiastic.
:-) I'm waiting now for the inevitable profusion of brand new, shiny red leaves; for some reason I find them almost as visually pleasing as the eventual roses.]

BELLY LAUGHTER (photo) & "I ask what a dream..." (tanka on a dream) by Roswila

I ask what a dream
of a tiny woman birthing
a wee baby means
he smiles lopsidedly and replies:
don’t bite off more than you can chew?

[tanka on a dream of 2-1-20.
😊 BTW, there’s also a more serious level to this little dream, but these days humor is very welcome and nourishing. Also, the “he” was a non-specific man whom I knew in the dream. And, yes, this tiny dream was vaguely lucid as I knew I’d dreamed that birthing woman to even ask that question of the man in the dream. Photo “Belly Laughter” (8-09-09 5262e[2]) by Roswila. I have a very small, sort of maroon colored, plastic Happy Hotei (known as the Laughing Buddha) whose belly I rub for good luck whenever I remember to. This larger than life-size Happy Hotei above was and probably still is in the entrance way to an Asian restaurant. His belly gets a tremendous workout, I’m sure.]
