CONGEALING SKY (photo) & AT THE RESTAURANT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

AT THE RESTAURANT

why did I guilt her
into giving me some of her ham?
not only is it
totally cold and greasy now
but she doesn't owe me anything

yeah, the serving I paid for and gobbled down
was much smaller than hers, but that's life,

and envy of another's portion
leaves a bitter taste indeed

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

NIGHT FLIGHT (photomorph) & THE SILENT VOICES (poetic dream narrative) by Roswila

SILENT VOICES

he lets his wife know once he's drugged
the bees so that she can safely enter
the ancient stone ruin in this forest

and true to his promise nothing buzzes
off the ceiling into her long dark hair
as she seeks the drawings that legend says
cover the insides of the crumbling walls

ah! she exclaims happily, and bends to making
sketch after sketch of the petroglyphs
that appear in the small moon of light
cast by her cap's lamp, each ancient figure
like a message she doesn't quite understand,
calling out in the same way it always has,
here in the dark with only the slowly
and mysteriously dwindling number
of busy bees passing back and forth

when she's done her husband gently gathers
the torpid bees, handful by handful,
releasing them outside the ruin into the fresh
forest air so that they can recover fully

each bee taking off awkwardly
from an open palm, to fly off crookedly
and eerily silent into the falling of night

THE RIVER'S GIFT (photo) & ON TURNING 72 YEARS OLD (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON TURNING 72 YEARS OLD

the lifeline on her palm itches intensely
as if cutting ever deeper like an old river
suddenly raised in altitude by a quake,
no longer meandering along
in its shallow groove,
but reclaiming some of its surging
energetic youth to carve a deeper,
more lasting impression upon the earth

LOOKING FOR LAVENDER (photomorph) & PROGRESSIVE THRIFT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

PROGRESSIVE THRIFT

as if things weren't already cheap enough,
our neighborhood Progressive Thrift Store (you know,
like those old dinners, housed course by course
in a different home?) is offering everything
"FOR FREE" tonight, and for tonight only

but viewing all the wares, tawdry or lightly used
and some even new, in all the different houses, only
makes me very sleepy, and I doze off on a bed
thinking free is not much cheaper
than what we've picked up over the years
from the store's card tables and over-turned cartons

I wake up suddenly to find my friend crowing about
a round box of "fairy dust" (glittered dusting powder,
give me a break) she'd found in a corner pile,
and I recall the lavender "fairy dust"
I'd once happily bought, briefly envying
the joyous enthusiasm I see in her smiling face

even though I know now no matter what we buy,
or even stumble upon for free, there's always
a hidden cost that's ultimately too high

TEARS FROM TOMORROW (photomorph) & YOU'D THINK (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

YOU'D THINK

you'd think her carefully silk screened sweatshirt
bore horrendous images the way folk
turn away from her

but it only conveys the many faces
of young children before they were abused,
unscarred, innocent faces all

yet one woman won't even let her join them
at the large dining room table,
objecting strenuously to "That sweatshirt!"

as if the silence of these lambs,
exposed en masse,
hurts her delicate ears

LOW FLYING DREAM (photomorph) & DREAM SEMAPHORE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

DREAM SEMAPHORE

ah yes, that's it ...

he's wearing military fatigues
and standing at a distance
with his back to me,
moving minutely against a sky
that's saffron with dust,
an unreadable semaphore

and that's it ... the dream image
will not unfold or expand,
even here in the clear morning air,
but clings to sere brevity
in a gritty orange sky,
a cry choked off at its root
