NO ESCAPING THE LIGHT (photo) & LYING IN AMBUSH (dream tanka w/two liner) by Roswila


LYING IN AMBUSH

all these silly dreams,
images and words punning
as they whiz on by,
and this last dream, of folk chased
around a bank by Keystone Cops

will even this silliness expose meaning
lying in ambush? you can bank on it


[tanka with two-liner on dreams of 7-18-14. And, for sure, meaning has surfaced as I drafted the above. In a way, I think the dreams were mostly trying to escape (or seek relief from?) the big disappointment I felt coming that landed painfully this morning on getting up and about. However, they were still fun. Another dream played with the "charger" for a cell phone and "charger" as in a medieval King's war horse. Oh, and just in case, here's a link to info on those endlessly manic and silly Keystone Cops of the silent film era. ROSY FLUSH (photo) & ONE FOR THE BOOKS (dream tanka pair w/two-liner) by Roswila


ONE FOR THE BOOKS

no matter how she
places the pieces in her
3-D construction
the shadows show up a soft
totally improper pink

not that this doesn't
please her wannabe artist's eye
but how can it be?
block light, dark's projected
not lovely pastel rose

this one's for the books (and art boxes
it seems): shadows may come in all colors


[a tanka pair capped by a two-liner on a dream of 7-17-14. I read somewhere once that our psychological shadow (in the Jungian sense) does not always consist of repressed dark/negative aspects that we then project onto others. But that it can occasionally have light/positive aspects, especially in folk with low self-esteem. I'd not have given one red cent when I went to bed last night that I'd have a positive dream like this one. (And there was a dream before this one with the same theme, couched in different less interesting imagery.) Not only am I going to watch -- even more closely, if that's possible -- what I think about other people, but this dream has set a fire under me to do some collage work again. SEEKING A NEW FORM (photo art) & DIPLOID DANCING (three dream tanka w/one two-liner) by Roswila


DIPLOID DANCING

... so now here's a dream
about word memes: on one side
human, and lined up
on the other, memes from Mars,
all anxious for the diploid dance

how easily each
meme splits in half, leaving their
other half behind,
to mate up with their foreign
yet fitting counterpart

strings of new copper
words curling themselves up on
a sheet of paper
the lines like a baroque
modern dance livening the sheet

the advent of a mixed art
meaning the afterbirth


[three tanka capped by a two-liner on a dream of 7-16-14. This dream (at least as far as I relate to it right now) reflects three issues. One, how I keep trying to meld things together, like poetry (and its various forms) with dreams and/or Tarot and sometimes all of them at once. Oh, then there's connecting my photos to all this, as well. Two, my wish for a fresher language in my writing. A desire to breathe new life into it. And three, the wish I could get across to others that the question "What does it mean?" doesn't really matter all that much. A corollary to that being a wish for others to understand and/or believe it when I say that I do not come to the blank page knowing what I'm going to say and what it means. I find all that out later, after it's completely written. And sometimes not even then. This was also a fun dream visually. The part of it reflected in the third tanka involved the strings of word memes lining up and then re-aligning on the sheet of paper. Trying to find the most balanced and pleasing draping of lines. BTW, that they were copper colored may bring another element (if you'll pardon the pun) into this dream as copper is said to help with arthritis pain. Oy! And the title for the photo I've chosen to go with this dream poem may hint at even another element: my wish for a new body. (And that's only partly a joke.) BURNING THROUGH (photo art) & WHILE THE HOUSE BURNS (dream tanka series w/one two-liner) by Roswila


WHILE THE HOUSE BURNS

the fire spreads slowly
and steadily through her home
surely there's time
to gather a few things
like her small television

but where is it?
where'd the roommate who gave
it to her stash it?
as she searches she notes
the fire's moving more quickly

yet she continues
to hunt for the idiot box
while at the glass door
of the terrace teenagers
in a ferment try to get in

without thinking
she double locks the door ...
then the idea!
leave all these snags and invasions
to the accommodating fire,

head out for cool high ground
and stroll beneath the stars

A ROUGH SOBBING

she stops at the door
of the apartment she's just
moved out of, hoping
for a last look at the place
she'd lived the longest ever

but she knows the fridge
stands empty, and the plastic plants
rest clean in their pots
there's nothing left to do, while she's
got more than enough memories

she turns away
her soles drag on the concrete path
a rough sobbing

AS SURELY AS BLOOD

please love the children,
she keeps thinking sadly,
just let them all stay
doesn't any one care they're
upstairs crying for a home

they're milling around
on the floor above our heads
just lost little kids
why all these trumped up charges
so they can be sent away

does it matter if they're not our children
compassion binds as surely as blood

SINGING IN THE RAIN (photo art) & THE SITUATION (dream tanka pair w/two-liner) by Roswila


THE SITUATION

the big boss tells me
to quickly cut a small check
to my Dad's order
that he deserves much more
but it's all the budget can bear

this situation's
completely confusing,
the boss: a stranger
my Dad: alive and young
the office: no longer extant

but I'm told my father sang his heart out
so I cut the check and give the man his due


[two tanka capped by a two-liner on a dream of 7-7-14. This was dreamed the same night as "Prelude" (posted here 7-8-14) and is the only other one I recalled out of many dreams that night. And, yes, it was vaguely lucid at the point recounted in the second tanka. The office was one I worked in many years ago, and is no longer in existence. And my father was a singer by profession most of his adult life. However, I suspect he's symbolic here of other folk (not necessarily singers) as well, both past and present. That boss? A dream fabrication as far as I know. And he may actually be the most important aspect of this dream, for various reasons too numerous to list/explain. That neither the payee nor that employment exist anymore, maybe that's saying there's no way to pay some debts other than to acknowledge them. And that I might do best not to forget where I came from and how I got to where I am today. Note of 7-13-13: Since drafting this poem and comments, I've come to a more encompassing awareness pointed to in this dream/poem. Very simply put, it has to do with the issue of how well do any of us hear others. I have this sense that we all "sing our hearts" out in this life, one way or another.
