SHADOWS OF ITS FORMER SELF (photomorph) & "the shadow cast..." (dream based scifaiku) by Roswila

the shadow cast by his soldered wing scarless

[dream based scifaiku written in 1999 & revised into one line form in 2007. A scifaiku is basically a haiku (or monoku as the above) with a sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or cosmological theme. I used to write a great deal of them years back and am still on a Yahoo scifaiku group email list. When I realized my night dreams had again escaped me I had the urge for some reason to look through the masses of scifaiku I've written. This is one of the earliest and I ever so vaguely recall the visual dream image it was based on. Photomorph "Shadows of Its Former Self" (6-12-16 001v6d) by Roswila]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

DREAM GOLD (photomorph) & BABY GOLD (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BABY GOLD

we've never even slept together, yet
we've had a biological son, one I'd
forgotten about somehow over
the years and only remember now
when he introduces himself to me,
an apparently very forgiving
young man with shiny dark brown
hair that bears a hint of the baby gold
I suddenly recall

it seems time may be more
than the great healer, it may,
if we are very lucky,
bring back in refined form
what we have lost along the way

BACKFIRE (photomorph) & PRAYER TO THE HEAT WAVE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE HEAT WAVE

like a backfire may you burn away
any fuel that this unexpressed passion
for him might use to run wild again
consuming acre after acre
of hope and self-esteem
leaving nothing in its wide wake
but a barren yearning
with no end in sight
the dark heat of his familiar silhouette
already rising again
through a rain of ashes

[non-dream free verse poem written at the end of June 2016. I've had this one on the back burner (if you'll pardon that unintended pun) not sure I wanted to post any more yearning poems. But I have zilch dream recall this morning and this prayer is still, unfortunately, relevant. And though the actual wildfire that gave me the image has been totally contained now, I have not been. BTW, this poem is 10th in a "Prayer to..." series, all posted here (Prayer to the Sun, ... to the Haze, ... to Empty Moments, ... to An Other, ... to Surrender, ... to Deep Sadness, ... to Pain, ... to the Left Brain Interpreter, and ... to the Wind) so just search by title (search box is in the upper left of this page) if you're interested. OPENING (photomorph) & BROKEN HEARTED (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BROKEN HEARTED

my heart may be broken
but my arms still do their work,
my spirit may be crushed
but my legs still carry on,
my mind may be scattered
like bits of sheep's wool
on a barbed wire fence, but

I still can see, still breathe,
still taste and touch and hear,
yes, these arms can still reach out,
and these hands can still open
to receive the gifts that spring
from this unfathomable world
like sudden flowers

[non-dream poem written 7-9-16. This is the poem I wrote before I had the dream I posted about yesterday, and mentioned in that dream poem's comment. Photomorph "Opening" (6-28-16 001v6) by Roswila]

MOVING ON (photo) & FOR ETHRIDGE (on a dream) by Roswila

FOR ETHRIDGE
(a deceased neighbor)

the fact that he's deceased
registers when I first sight him
but figures not at all in our very brief
encounter as he opens the door out
to the nighttime street and pauses
long enough to say something to me

he looks so young and handsome
that I almost didn't recognize him
maybe it was his stay in the hospital
that's made such tremendous changes

it seems he's simply stopped by
to encourage me to continue doing
exactly what I have been and is gone
before I can ask for clarification

the warm sweep of his positivity
leaves me thinking that maybe I've found
a fully life-affirming path at last

[on a dream of 7-9-16. When Ethridge died I regretted not having gotten to know him better. What I did know of him is consistent with what he does in this dream. What's intriguing to me is the timing. It's an affirmation of a very recent change I've been "trying on for size" in how I am in my life. I actually wrote a poem about that change before sleep last night (and may post it tomorrow). Photo "Moving On" (7-10-16 004v2a) by Roswila]
