IT FALLS APART (photomorph) & EVERY LAST BODY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

EVERY LAST BODY

the student body's* in bare skin display
on this hot spring day, every last body
in the huge, lively bunch it seems ... No,
no, don't go there, Patricia, don't go there!
Aw! Scheisse!** You just had to go there,
didn't you? And now, Miss Smarty Pants,
how are you going to get out of this
quagmire of self-denigration, this end-
less self-put down of your own all too lived
in old body ... there's not even anyone
around to extend a hand to you as you flail,
caught in this bog of self-judgment as surely
as in quick sand, no alternative thoughts
floating like planks to grab on to, no firm
ground in sight to wriggle carefully towards
... well, hey, maybe you can just understand
this trap you've gotten yourself into (again!)
as a mud bath, it has been said
they're good for the skin

[non-dream free verse poem written 5-19-17. * Inspired by the University of Santa Barbara students I wander among almost daily on my long walks through Isla Vista. ** "Scheisse" -- pronounced "shisa," with a long "i," it's German for "S--t!" There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

NIGHT CLIMBING (photo) & TWO PALMS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

TWO PALMS

some day I will write a poem
about these two tall straight
palms and their partnership
against the sky, graceful as they
parallel each other even in
the high winds; maybe it's their
rootedness close by each other
in the same patch of earth that
gives them such stability, or
maybe it's the white clouds
that back them up; and even
though, as with most things
perceived by the human eye,
all this is a projection, I'm quite
fond of imagining that these two
palms stand proud, partnering
each other as they climb
toward heaven

[non-dream free verse poem written 5-15-17. The photo today is of the two palms referenced in this poem. I often watch them from some distance away when I sit on our retirement community's library balcony that over looks our pool. I've taken many different closer day shots of them, and ultimately settled on this one after quite a bit of editing. Not being a trained photographer (that's putting it mildly) I mostly just experiment and learn as I go along. Trying to get and ultimately edit an at least decent pic of these palms was a fun challenge, given the bright sun, their heights, and the surrounding poles and wires and building. And, honestly, I'm still not all that happy with this pic as it doesn't really get across what the poem comes a bit closer to doing. Photo "Night Climbing" (5-18-17 014v2) by Roswila]

SEEKING SHELTER (photomorph) & UNMASKED (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

UNMASKED

the persistent dream image keeps
tiptoeing past in the background as I'm
dreaming other things, but I won't let it
get away with that and grab it
by the collar, asking the familiar
male figure who's always and ever
been only a friend: "Who are you
a symbol of? You, who now say
you've loved and desired me
for several years"

as I look at this unmistakable
maleness standing pinned by my
mental grip, the full body mask he's
been wearing splits suddenly into
pieces, and like an impossibly adult
new born bird the underlying male
steps awkwardly out of the cracked
pieces of the shell:

how obvious! it's you, who else would
it be underneath the dream mask?
and gloriously on the rise, no less,
glistening with all the wishful
tears that created this dream

THE BLUSHING TREE (photomorph) & ANOTHER TRUMP DREAM (narrative on a dream) by Roswila

ANOTHER TRUMP DREAM

prez trump seems basically
approving of my written review
of a large meeting he'd called,
all except a small action taken
in it by one of his underlings,
an action repeated five times;
he's very disturbed (to put it
mildly) that I'd not mentioned this;
I explain it was because I'd not
really taken note of the action, it must
not have impressed me, and say so to
our prez (very tactfully, but I do speak
up); he pontificates in his rough way
in front of a host of hangers-on about
how whether or not the action was eye
catching the first time, once repeated
four more times it became an attention
grabber and I should have noted it,
adding that I really must develop my
journalism skills if I want to stay in his
employ; I feel shamed that I'd not seen
the five time deed and resolve to be
even more observant and aware, while
a slow burn begins beneath the shame:
why is he so crass, nay, brutal, and
in front of everyone else: is this the
middle ages that I should be so
publicly flogged?

NO WAY (photo) & IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK

is it too much to ask
for just a taste of you?
through my lips and tongue,
my fingertips and palms,
in that private crevice
that weeps as surely
as my eyes
for just a taste of you

forever's a fantasy
for which there's no time left,
but a taste
would be nothing less
than heaven

THE DUEL (photo) & ZORRA (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ZORRA

the costume's coming together nicely,
it'll be fun to be Zorro, maybe I'll
even spray my hair black for the night,
then there are those black glasses of mine
that I can tape a little mask to, and I'm sure
fake swords abound on e-bay, while a cape's
a cinch to hand sew out of some cheap
material -- I can even paint the requisite
"Z" on it's back

but what to do about the waist down, I
most certainly can't (nay, refuse to) wear
slacks and Zorro would never wear a skirt,
not that Hero! (I can just see him jumping
into a fight, skirts flapping, revealing a pair
of nice, slim legs -- men have all the luck!)

well, what if I'm a female Zorro: Zorra!
yeah, who wants to wait around anyway
for some male to notice what's going on
and then decide whether or not
to come to the rescue,
I can make my own decisions
about rescuing from now on,
thank you very much

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-14-17. This was in direct response to a request I made of my dream world as I went to sleep last night. I'd done some Tarot reading earlier that evening and the Page of Swords in the Tarot of the Cat People came up as an important card:

One of the meanings I've picked up over the years for this card (in any deck) is "The child of difficult parents who ultimately overcomes." Too much to go into, but that led to the request of my dream world, leading to this dream poem. Photo "The Duel" (2-27-17 037v2) by Roswila]

THE FOG ROLLS ON (photo) & BABES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BABES

beware of the "Babes" in this life

that nickname may imply innocence
and softness, and that sugar wouldn't melt
in their mouths, but just look at them:

infant, grown woman, and Babes
of all ages and sexes in between, even
the handsome man walking with you
and looking over your shoulder as you
review this line up of Babes: they're all
teasers, sweet and loving come hithers
roll off their tongues and shine
in their eyes and smiles, but rejection
and betrayal is what they hand out
once you step up

no wonder they now stand in this police
line up, waiting for you to identify
the biggest perpetrator
from among this backlog
of shameless Babes

fuggedaboudit! they're all equally guilty,
toss the whole damn lot of them
into the can and throw
away the key

better to wind up walking alone through this world
than ever again to hook up with a Babe
