SEEKING ENLIGHTENMENT (photomorph) & THE SAME ANSWER (two dream tanka with a dreamku) by Roswila

THE SAME ANSWER

the odd little man
dressed like a wooden soldier
asks the oracle
the same question one more time
and gets the same answer

another presence
and I sway “no” slowly
back and forth
and the strange little man
holds me to stop my motion

“That’s nauseating”
he says “but I hear the ‘no’”
Does he "no" he’s funny?

[re-posting -- after some tiny tweaks -- of two tanka and a dreamku on a dream of 3-28-09. This tickled me back then (in addition to having some relevance I no longer recall) and it tickles me now. As to relevance today? Some will probably come to me after I've re-posted it, which is sometimes how it goes. :-) Photomorph "Seeking Enlightenment" (8-7-14 015v3) by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

AFTER THE SURGE (photo morph) & WITHOUT A DOUBT (dream tanka series) by Roswila

WITHOUT A DOUBT

they're calm and pleasant
now that I've made it quite clear
that I'm moving out
how do folk go from sixty
to zero in seconds flat?

I'm still so angry
I could spit nails and hit
a bull's eye each time
but at least they're leaving me alone
in our apartment to pack up

old habits die hard --
as hard as anger it seems --
I start to worry
about how they'll arrange
furniture and handle money

but none of that's
a concern of mine anymore
they'll make their own beds
from now on and lie in them
I'm on to a new place

as I fill my note pad
with lists of what to toss and
what to keep, I breathe
deeply: I definitely don't
want to bring this anger along

old habits may die hard
but die they do, I mumble,
and then laugh, adding
that funerals are for the living
and I still am without a doubt

EXCERPT FROM "Fall of the Towers" (on living in New York City on 9/11)

... The cloud of smoke, ash and debris looks to be a couple of blocks away, but is way downtown:

looming ever larger
the clouds
of a towering demise

* * *

The sidewalks are crowded with purposefully walking people. There is hardly any vehicle traffic, but for the ambulances, fire trucks, and police vans:

the sirens wail -- we walk and walk

* * *

For a couple of blocks I stumble slowly along in the wake of an elderly lady and her day worker companion. The old lady tries to talk her companion into leaving her immediately and going home to her children. The worker graciously refuses, carefully supporting her charge and saying she'll see her home and fix her meals for the day first:

each more concerned
for the other:
their caring sustains me ...

* * *

[excerpted from my lengthy haibun (prose capped by a haiku) series written shortly after the disaster, about my experiences living in New York City on 9/11. Each year when I put up something in memory of that day (and the many months afterward) I struggle to know what to say. Today I will simply reiterate what I'm sure I've said before, that I hope all who were terribly affected by this tragedy have found healing and peace.]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

GANAPATI GLYPH (photo morph) & ICONOGRAPHY (dream tanka pair ) by Roswila

ICONOGRAPHY

I click on the icon
and a figure rises like smoke
she suggests I guess
what she has to offer me
her black and white stripes wavering

I have no trouble
stating what this young genie
has bottled for me
but then comes her challenge:
"What do I need of you?"

[re-post of a tanka pair on a dream of 11-3-08, with some tweaks I made today. I've often felt I should be asking my dream world and psyche what they require of me, given all the pushing and pulling I do at them. And that's only partly a joke. Photo morph "Ganapati Glyph" (9-5-14 004v11) by Roswila; this is of one of my many Ganesh figurines, a brass one, and that sword is my letter opener that He graciously holds for me.]

COSMIC SPIDER (photo morph) & "spider, here I am ..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

spider, here I am,
your personal nightmare
why did you build here
on this window sash again
earthquake territory

[non-dream tanka written 9-4-14. Same window space and probably the same spider I posted a haiku about here on August 10th. Guess from a spider's viewpoint it's prime real estate. Photo morph "Cosmic Spider" (8-22-14 016v11) by Roswila]

MAGICAL GARDEN (photo) & THE TAD POLE'S TALE (dream tankas w/one two-liner) by Roswila

THE TADPOLE'S TALE

who's this strange woman
in my bedroom and why's she here
oops! she's no woman
at all, but a good-sized,
greyish green pond frog

what odd fairy tale
is this? doesn't it usually
go the other way?
from magical talking frog
to full and loving human?

but this is a dream not a fairy tale
and anything goes, doesn't it?

so herein may lie
the tadpole's tale (please pardon
that intended pun):
sometimes you have to go all the way
back to start to fully transform

[tanka series with a two-liner on a dream of 9-7-14. I associate the idea of going all the way back to start to the oroboros. That ancient symbol of a snake (or dragon) with its tail in its mouth, symbolizing constant re-creation, or the eternal return. There's another way of reading this dream, that does not necessarily exclude the one expressed in the poem. The initial sighting of the strange woman can been seen as a vision of the possible that the frog's appearance casts before it, a foreshadowing if you will. Additionally, the dream may be reminding me not to "run ahead of myself" as I go through so many changes. After all, a magical frog is not to be sneezed at in my impatience to get further, faster. LEAF LITTER (photo morph) & CREATIVITY'S COFFER (dream tankas w/two liners) by Roswila

CREATIVITY'S COFFER

there must be a ream
of paper littering the floor,
full color copies
of the company's sheets
of assembly instructions

you know, those "slot A
into slot B" and "tighten
fully before use"
declarations by the item's
components spread out on the page

one simply follows
the letters and numbers
to their touted ends
and like habits of thought
they build the expected results

there must be a sheet
of how-to-do instructions
for everything
on our planet in this pile
on the living room floor

oh, look, that one's
for a hobby horse, how sweet!
and this, a metronome,
and some of these larger ones
amuse like Rube Goldberg's work

the comfort of predictability
all laid out, right here, at one's feet

watch it, though, one might slip up
on these layers of glossy paper

and, what's more, what of the cost
to creativity's coffer
