SEA CHANGE (photo) & SOON (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SOON

maybe this scene leads up to those dangerously
large ocean waves the evening news warns
are coming: an agitated ocean, creating a series
of pools in the sand along its heavily frothy edge

and in one of the pools, a pair of my sneakers
lazily swirling, as if nonchalant about its certain
fate in the explosive curls of the soon to arrive
huge waves

I rouse from my own usual morning lethargy
to wonder if I have enough time – much less
energy and strength – to attempt to retrieve my
sneakers before the crash of massive waves,
as I don’t relish hobbling home barefoot

but I’d much rather stand here, feet sunk softly
in wet sand, a witness to my own mesmerization
by my footwear’s slow circling in the small pond

and then I notice: they have no laces! how ever
would they stay on my stiff, arthritic feet, if I
could retrieve them?

sigh … I turn away from the pool to look down
the beach toward where I live: better that I hassle
the painful way home barefoot

one last glance back at the small pool reveals
the sneakers are gone: sunk totally out of both sight
and reach to the bottom of the growing pool?

or sucked out to sea when my back was briefly
turned, the early edge of the huge waves washing
away what I can neither reclaim, no use if I could

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

REMNANTS (photomorph) & "immortality? ... (scifaiku) by Roswila

immortality?
(echoing clucks) the hen’s last clutch?

[scifaiku written 1-2-20. “Scifaiku ("science fiction haiku") is a form of science fiction poetry first announced by Tom Brinck with his 1995 Scifaiku Manifesto. It is inspired by Japanese haiku, but explores science, science fiction (SF), and other speculative fiction themes, such as fantasy and horror...” (from Wikipedia). I’ve been writing in this form on and off (more off, for some time now) for many years. And many of my dreamku/dream haiku are more akin to scifaiku, given their unrealistic scenarios and such. In any case, it’s always fun to scratch the scifaiku itch when I get it. BTW, thanks to the members of the Yahoo scifaiku group for their inspiration over the years. Today's was inspired by a post by Rich M. Photomorph “Remnants” (Archival Pix 5-25-09 1718ev3[2]) by Roswila]

YOU WANT WHAT?! (photo) & "she expects me ..." (dream haiku) by Roswila

she expects me
to edit dirty water
I let it drain

[re-post of dream haiku of May 2007. Another from those old dream haiku I’ve been going through on and off for a while now (see recent previous posts for more info). This feels like a particularly apt one to re-post today, the first day of a new year. I’ve been struggling for some time now to make not only better but more realistic choices. In some ways what I too often find myself doing is exactly what is expected of me in this old dream. Well, this old dream haiku can act as an additional New Year’s resolution: I’m gonna do my dangdest to recognize when an expectation is absurd. And that goes for any I may have of other people, as well. Of course, that also requires recognizing when an expectation is holding some sort of sway in a situation. Too often (at least for me) I’m on autopilot and don’t even see clearly that there’s an unstated “demand and supply” interaction taking place. I remember really liking that I chose to let that stupid dirty water drain in the dream. I have gotten a wee bit better since at recognizing “dirty water” (both my own and other people’s) and hope I’ll get better yet. Irony? Some folk don’t even seem to care whether you meet their expectations. The just want to keep you all tied up trying to. OK. So, it’s up to me to take care of myself in those situations. What they do is what they do and I can’t change that. I can only let the dang dirty water go down the drain.
😊 I just remembered that silly old (from 1947!) jingle for “Ajax, the foaming cleanser,” in which you just “float the dirt right down the drain…” Photo “You Want What?!” (Archival Old Pix-10, 002) taken of Roswila by a friend and edited by Roswila]

WHAT LIES BENEATH (photo) & "finished basement ..." (dream haiku) by Roswila

finished basement
I do better than before
on the climb back up

[dream haiku, written in January of 2008 (re-posted 12-31-19). Another from that stash of old dream haiku/monoku I am considering for re-posting. It hits me just now that it’s probably appropriate at year’s end to be going through the last of my three old, hand-written notebooks of dream haiku. As I’ve said here before, the books are truly old, some of the source dreams going back to the 1990’s and earlier. There’s always that looking back this time of year. But what I find interesting is that many of these old dream/poems were more predictive of my future than I recognized. Enough to give me goosebumps, every so often as I read. And I’ve been long accustomed to having the occasional “psychic” moment, sometimes in dreams. But it’s eerie to find them in retrospect. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this could simply be a matter of “self-fulfilling prophecy.” I.e., I may not have seen a particular dream as predictive at the time. But just the act of writing about it years ago, put the possibility of manifesting it in the back of my mind. I hasten to add, though, one could say that about anything we think/do/observe. All of life is deeply suggestive. Who’s really to know the source(s) of anything, ultimately? Maybe this is what is at the heart of that assertion that “Everything is one.” Just try to identify, much less untangle all the contributing causative events in which we're embedded.
😊 Anyway, back to today’s re-post: I think it’s a nice bit of positivity to end this year with. Which leads me to: HAPPY NEW YEAR, ONE & ALL! Photo “What Lies Beneath” (Archival Old Pix-2, 12718) by Roswila; BTW, this pic is of the guts of the only elevator we have on our retirement community grounds; given the heavy use it gets (as much for freight/furniture, etc. as people with walkers and shopping carts) it's amazing its motor has only been replaced once in the 12 years I've been living here)]

TRIPPING UP (photomorph) & "lead-footed and sad ..." (dream monoku) by Roswila

lead-footed and sad forgotten dreams hangover

[monoku on a dream, originally written as dream haiku January 23, 2008. Turned some time ago into a monoku from the usual 3-line haiku form. See comments to yesterday’s post for info on the monoku form. BTW, this may be the first posting of this ‘ku, in any form. What draws me to it today is that I dreamed/wrote it only 3 weeks before I moved from New York City to Goleta, CA. I rediscovered it last night in getting back to that project of going over my three ancient, handwritten, dream haiku notebooks. And I do mean “ancient…” some of the source dreams go back into the 1990’s. And a couple I recalled from childhood. Photomorph “Tripping Up” (Screenshots/many 2-6-19[14]) by Roswila]

POSEUR (photo) & "coloring the bracelet ..." (re-posted & tweaked dream haiku) by Roswila

coloring the butterfly bracelet iron spine

[repost of a dream haiku I wrote in April of 2007, edited recently into monoku (one-line) form. This version came out of that wandering through my ancient haiku notebooks I was doing some time ago, and posting some of the results here. I have quite a list of others for possible re-posting, many of their previously shared versions lightly tweaked on re-discovering them. I chose this one to post in its new monoku form because I have always liked the contrast within it. And how suggestive it is (at least to me) for such a straightforward image. I must also admit to needing its inspiration very much these days: one can be delicate and creative, and still be strong. Info on monoku. I’ll add that I like monoku visually (as I’ve said many times here before) because its single line echoes how haiku were laid out in original Japanese calligraphy: one line (but vertical). There’s more not only to the monoku form for me, but this particular little poem. However, I’ll leave it at this for now. Maybe I’m back to re-posting old haiku of mine. If so, you’re in for all sorts of other nattering on my part.
