INVOKING THE MASCULINE (photomorph) & ONE WAY OR THE OTHER (dream narrative) by Roswila

ONE WAY OR THE OTHER

Dream One

her long-time lover, Bill,*
arrives, as always she's delighted
to see him but becomes anxious
when he says "I'm quitting!"
guiding her to lie with him
on a large, over-stuffed couch;
as he brushes debris of some sort
off the cushions he quietly adds
"But I'm not leaving you..."
this is a relief but also a sorrow,
after all he's a known cheater,
then again, she's the one
dreaming of him

Dream Two

she's cleaning her kitchen, when along
comes Brad,** sporting only tighty-
whities (what a sight that is, she thinks)
he ever so casually mentions
that he's going away for a while, quickly
adding as he puts a warm, caressing
hand on her shoulder "But I'll be
back soon, I'm not leaving for good;"
as she tosses the last sticky garbage
from a plate into the trash she
wonders why she wants him around
at all, given he's a terrible flirt,
never coming across even as he turns
the heat up further each time
they meet in her dreams

Conclusion

it seems the only fidelity she can rely on
is the inevitability of seduction,
one way or the other

[narrative on two dreams of 11-18-16. *Bill Clinton, who's appeared over many years in my dreams, sometimes as lover, other times just good friend. **Brad Pitt, who's appeared once in a while in my dreams since moving to CA, usually with some sort of flirtation going on between us. And, yes, there was a vague lucidity (knowing one is dreaming, as one is dreaming) during both of these dreams, as implied by the ending lines of each. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IN THE ROUND (photomorph) & THE WHITE BALLOON (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE WHITE BALLOON

one white balloon on the loose
rolls and bounces in the light wind
down the sidewalk along
Camino Pescadero

sometimes ahead of me like a child
skipping, sometimes wandering
in the street as if daring a passing
vehicle to stop it or flying off
to pop out at me from behind
a parked car, its simple wholeness
even surviving a series of bobblings
against pointed drought
dry branches of bushes

when this delicate companion
heads for all the world
with a conscious purpose
rapidly down a side street
where I'm not going I briefly wish
I could call it back, a mother worried
about her exploring toddler

SINGING FOR THE SKY (photo) & "her memory gone..." (one-line senryu) by Roswila

her memory gone and yet, and yet, how she sings!

[one line senryu [very similar to haiku] written in Feb. 2016. One of the aspects of living in a retirement community is seeing more than the wider populations' share of neighbors in various stages and kinds of memory loss. This senryu is actually a composite "she," based on listening to several different women over the 9 years I've been living here. Music does seem to stick rather tenaciously in memory. My hope is that they enjoyed singing. A couple, though, weren't even aware that they were singing softly and sweetly to themselves. Photo "Singing for the Sky" (11-8-16 003v2) by Roswila]

CHANNELING (photomorph) & A DIFFICULT BIRTH (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A DIFFICULT BIRTH

this birth's a difficult one,
even more so because it's in public

yeah, I'm lying on the sidewalk,
on a sunny day, a man between
my legs watching and guiding
the process (what an irony!
I've wanted a man there
for so long and I finally get one,
but for an unexpected birthing)

another pain hits, not terrible
and certainly not one that inspires
getting behind it with my own
pushing, but I give it a try

he laughs lightly, saying that I'll
have to do far better than that
wimpy try, that I need to
really bear down

well, can you spell "pissed" children?
I tell him off even as another much bigger
pain rolls out and a fear courses
through me that if I push too hard
I'll rip my insides, and somehow
knowing this is an actual danger,
I begin panting rather than pushing

sometimes, no matter what others
may think and even have the temerity to say,
taking it slow's the wisest thing to do

[free verse poem on a dream of 11-15-16. This is one of those rare dreams I have that is quite a surprise on recall. I'd gone to sleep in an awful mood and feeling rather helpless/hopeless. I didn't even think to ask my dreams for advice, and along came this dream. Photomorph "Channeling" (5-25-09 1726v14a) by Roswila]

FAN DANCING (photo) & TO FEEL DESIRABLE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila]

TO FEEL DESIRABLE

yeah maybe I am too much
I've been told so often enough

but who says you must take me in
all in one swallow

instead think of me as a ten course dinner
from which how much you partake
is totally optional

or better yet know that like grazing
across a wide green savannah
a series of hungry nibblings would be
just fine as far as I'm concerned

I do not need to be taken up entire
to feel desirable

GARBLED (photomorph) & GOING FOR IT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

GOING FOR IT

it's time to let her
try to sing the part in the play
even though it's clear
she doesn't really know the lyrics
and the tunes are still strange to her

I know this part all too well, myself,
tunes, words, character motivation,

all would be accurately and movingly conveyed
by me, but he wants to give her the opportunity

and so she tries, getting more agonizingly sad
each time she has to start a song one more time

refusing to stop
so that it becomes almost like
watching a train wreck
over and over, or a wound that stays
resistant to treatment of any kind

as I watch him watch her it becomes obvious
he now wants her to have the role out of pity

he clearly can't bear the thought of further
hurting her by denying her what she wants

whether she's done it consciously or not, I think,
she's gone for what she desires by hurting herself

[mix of tanka and two-liners on a dream of 11-13-16. Yikes! I sure didn't like this one when I recalled it. A sort of odd form of munchausen by proxy. I've had the thought before, but now having had this dream I need to give it very serious consideration. Photomorph "Garbled" (4-08a-15 031v2k) by Roswila]

HOLDING ON (photo) & ALL FALL DOWN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ALL FALL DOWN*

hold on to me before it's too late
my grip alone on you is not enough
to link us through this dizzying
long fall we call life

I do not want to lose you to the wind
of this agonizing descent, to watch
you spin off into the dark that presses
in from all sides as we all fall
slowly down

that final grounding awaiting us all
will come soon enough,
I do not want to lose you
before I must lose you
