ADVENT OF THE BLACK SWANS (photomorph) & BIRDS! (non-dream mixed format poem) by Roswila

BIRDS!

sidewalk Birds, Birds, Birds!
(with the occasional Lime among them
like an ugly duckling)
wingless and fearless, perched for the taking,
obstructing entranceways and even gardens

what's convenience for many, a hindrance to others:
squeeze your walker past them, why don't you

and cast a spell, making a truth of the lie
in their name: Begone! Fly Off!

[non-dream tanka capped by two 2-liners written 11-16-18. This was drafted on my first long walk in a couple of weeks. In only that short period of time the flock of Birds (with the occasional other brand, Lime) landing in our area has grown tremendously. Ack! Making it worse is the inconsideration of many who leave them partially blocking our already narrow or crowded sidewalks. Ah well, it was really good to be up to a walk. And I'll adjust to this change. (With some grousing, obviously.) What I'm not looking forward to is when the UCSB students are all back from Thanksgiving Holiday trips and crowd the sidewalks and streets riding them. (Yeah, just like they do with their bikes. Even though it's not legal to ride a bike on a sidewalk.) Then there's the skateboarders. Oh my, I'm sounding an awful lot like a cranky old lady. Hm, could it be that I am? :-D I hasten to add that it's a rare student who isn't considerate of me with my walker. It's just that all it takes is one who really messes up and I'll be the one in trouble. I was nearly wiped out recently by a skateboarder. Though the bigger -- but more readily anticipated -- problems are those who text while walking toward me, completely oblivious and on a collision course! (I usually wait til the last minute to say something, just to see how long it will take them to notice me ... an old lady's game of chicken. LOL) I suppose I can see all this as keeping me "sharp," so to speak. Aware and on the alert. Not a bad thing at all. As long as I still enjoy the walks, and I most definitely do. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

LIFE GOES ON (photomorph) & "with or without pain ..." (non-dream mixed format poem) by Roswila

with or without pain,
of body or soul or both,
the day's to be lived
imagine how ephemeral we are
in the context of the universe

some flowers blossom
for barely one day

THE INVITATION (photo) & ADVICE IN A LONG FORGOTTEN VOICE (mixed format non-dream poem) by Roswila

ADVICE IN A LONG FORGOTTEN VOICE

no, don't keep making
wishes, you stubborn old woman,
you know you almost
always get them, and then what will you do,
stuck again with more than you bargained for

or, maybe, as also happens, less in some major
way that you never could have anticipated

so let your life live itself out, wish free:
the present moment's offerings pass quickly

[non-dream tanka with two 2-liners written 11-14-18. That "voice" I kept hearing as I drafted this was my paternal grandmother's. Which is odd as she (Grace Adelia) never offered me any sort of advice, at least that I can recall. Much less like that in this poem. She just about wished the vast majority of her own life away, in love with her first husband. I do not mean to minimize the other sorts of objective challenges she faced, nor to claim that I ever really knew her deeply. Simply that a particular aspect of her way of living stands now as a warning to me. Hm, that's probably why my unconscious foisted this (ultimately mediocre) poem on me. To push me to look closely at and release all the wishing. To recognize the consequences of looking past what's right here. Of course, this sort of letting go is far easier said than done. But isn't that true of much of life? In fact, I'm beginning to believe that being able to let go may be one of the most important things we need to learn to do, in so many ways. And certainly at this far end of life at which I now find myself. (I'll be 75 in less than two months.) Photo "The Invitation" (11-27-15 006v3a) by Roswila]

THE STALKER (photo) & "weaving through ..." (non-dream monoku) by Roswila

BLOWN COVER (photomorph) & THE JUMPER (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

THE JUMPER

tattoo it on her
forehead: Beware of Triggers! those
jumps to conclusions,
those fiery flights of fancy she takes
without warning: sniper fire from a nest

[non-dream tanka written 11-11-18. I'm saddened (and blush) to admit it, but this is actually about my own struggle. One of my pet peeves for most of my adult life has been how people jump to conclusions. Not that I believed I never did, but I was vain enough to think I had that sort of jumping down to a benign, almost non-existent level. Well, scratch that belief. It's been brought home to me big-time, how much I take huge leaps myself. Photomorph "Blown Cover" (10-8-11 11370v2f) by Roswila]
