DEEP COVER (photo) & BUTT NAKED (tanka w/two-liner pair) by Roswila

BUTT NAKED

what to do, what to do
all these dream shadow figures
visiting at once
each asking to be understood
to tell their deeper stories

I get it, I really do get it, well, get them
at least, though I'd much rather not

it's embarrassing to stand butt naked
even if alone before my own mirror

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

REFLECTIONS IN SATIN (photo morph) & "the black leather gang..." (dream tanka) by Roswila

BLACK LEATHER GANG

the black leather gang
pads up my apartment stairs
sleek, like young panthers,
they set my heart to racing
with the thrill of hope’s bright bite

[re-posting of a tanka on a dream of 5-23-08. I slightly tweaked this for re-posting, taking out the capitalization and periods. As I've had more experience with tanka and haiku, I find that capitals and periods weight them down. BTW, when I re-post it's almost always because I see some resonance in the piece to what might be going on currently. Many times I've picked out a piece to re-post just because I like it, tweaked it (if necessary), and even re-posted it before I see what that resonance is. Almost as if I'd had a dream and have to wait for "meaning" to surface. Photo morph "Reflections In Satin" (8-16-14 024v8) by Roswila]

THE FLOOD NEXT TIME (photo morph) & THE CHARGER (dream tanka series w/two-liner) by Roswila

THE CHARGER

my best friend and I
wander the sea's edge looking
for an open spot
but in this crowd there's no room
for us to spread our blanket

then I notice three
empty squares of gleaming sand
my friend ignores them
as too small but I'm concerned
about why they were vacated

other spots open
around us as I look toward
the turbulent sea,
we'd best grab our cells phones, I say,
we're about to be flooded!

but it's way too late
the water's already
shorted out our cells
we flee, sloshing with the crowd,
toward higher dryer ground

sans charged cell phones
whatever will we do,
I grouse, as my friend
points to a long line forming
at the edge of the milling crowd

each person waits their turn humbly
as the line moves ever so slowly

in a post-flood world the man
with a charger is king

[tanka series capped by a pair of two-liners on a dream from late July 2014. I've had this one on the back burner for a bit over a month. Almost scrapped it but decided it might do for a day just like today when I have nothing else I feel like posting. And at least it's dream-based and not a re-post. I should note that there's a pun in that last line, a charger also being a medieval King's (or Knight's) war horse. And that set me to racing -- if you'll pardon another pun -- after various further associations to this dream, though I didn't get very far. I also wonder at all the water given the drought California's in. Of course, it would require bringing the desalination plant on line that they keep dragging their heels about here in the Santa Barbara area. :-) Photo morph "The Flood Next Time" (8-12-14 013v7b) by Roswila]

CUDDLING (photo) & TELL ME LIES, TELL ME LIES (mixed style dream poem) by Roswila

TELL ME LIES, TELL ME LIES

Dream One

I look around annoyed,
my roommate said she'd readied our
bathroom for company
but these piles of dirty towels
and garbage will fill huge bags

Dream Two

I'm growing fond myself
of this very popular actor
but now, as if sugar
wouldn't melt in his mouth, he says
"Why am I losing weight?"

yeah, well, no "why" about it
he's clearly piling on the pounds

Dream Three

as long as we're alone
you're quite content to cuddle
but let your best friend
step into the picture and you
don't know me anymore

are you trying to deceive your pal or me?
I guess it doesn't matter, a lie's a lie

Morning Song

"Tell me lies, tell me lies,
tell me sweet little lies..."
the song comes with me into waking
and though Mama didn't raise no fool
this surprising sentiment
softens the night's deceptions

[a mix of tanka, two-liners, and free verse on dreams of 9-1-14. The title references the lyrics of the Fleetwood Mac song, "Little Lies," which I woke up singing. Photo "Cuddling" (7-28-09 4338e) by Roswila]

RISING TO THE MOMENT (photo) & "delving into shadows..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

delving into shadows
can wait for another day
look! dappled foothills
rise in a sly tarantella
under a cloudless sky

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

INVITATION (photo) & BLUNTLY PUT (dream tanka trio w/two-liner) by Roswila

BLUNTLY PUT

even in the dream
she can tell he's neither
fish nor fowl,
neither the usual seducer
nor the distant friend

and his approach
proves different, his desire clear
but also his patience,
a certain sadness or is it
wisdom in his waiting

although she senses
the outcome will be the same
(they'll be together)
something in the timing
is not quite right for her yet

bluntly put, that sound's her courage dragging its heels

[tanka trio capped by a monoku on a dream of 8-31-14. Yes, that first line refers to a vague lucidity in the beginning of the dream. I realized he was neither (yet almost both) of two male types I tend to dream about. And I should add that this dream, as I understand the vast majority of mine to be, is about a psychological process. Photo "Invitation" (8-22-14 021v3) by Roswila]

AFTER THE GOOD-BYE (photo) & EXCITING TIMES (dream tanka series w/two-liner) by Roswila

EXCITING TIMES

exciting times, these!
Hil's* off on her campaign
to be elected,
in a rising tide of giddy hope
we happily hug good-bye

I wish I could be
at her side as she campaigns
but it's not my job
I've done my part simply
by being encouraging

as she steps back
from our hug I'm surprised
by my own question:
"Do you know how hard it is
to bear the mantle of greatness..."

she nods, waiting for me to finish...
"and how much harder yet to be good?"

[tanka series capped by a two-liner on a dream of 8-30-14. *Hil = Hilary Clinton. I've grown to like and respect her through the years (much to my surprise). But I am not sure how I'd feel about having her as President. This a deceptively simple dream, going other places in my psyche than my political musings. Though the metaphor of politics and rulers is quite apt. Photo "After the Good-Bye" (8-15-09 5566v2) by Roswila]
