RIDING THE GREAT ROUND (photo) & THE PARADE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE PARADE

the objects parade
into manifestation
each of them lifeless,
all they take to scintillate:
a touch of my blood, sweat, and tears

a huge round one rolls in rumbling with import
have I enough left with which to touch it alive

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

TILT! (photomorph) & WHAT A PUZZLE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT A PUZZLE

time, you blesséd old ogre,
disgorging everything for a duration
less substantial than the flickering
of moonlight on a darkly lapping lake
before swallowing it all up

only to instantly release
a new moment to be devoured
by your inevitable hunger ...
and another ... and another ...

what a puzzle then that a thing
called "I" maintains a belief
in its own continuity
and in the value of tilting
at flickering windmills

[non-dream free verse poem finished 7-24-15. Although not dream based, this could be called dream assisted. I completed it yesterday, but was vaguely discontent with the final image. When I woke this morning singing "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha, I realized I'd found the closing image. Photomorph "Tilt!" (6-15-15 001v5b) by Roswila]

OVER & OVER (photo) & BELOW THE SURFACE (dream narrative) by Roswila

BELOW THE SURFACE

naked ... again! I begin wending my way through
the dingy maze of this below the surface train station
to where I'd stored a few of my things, maybe
I left clothes there the last time I was down here

suddenly I'm faced with an open expanse
of sunny city streets, and when I turn away
from the not unpleasant view to go deeper into
this warren of a station for my belongings,
a young dark man promptly stops me and says
I'll have to pay to get back into the station

he doesn't respond when I point out that I
didn't go through any exit and there isn't
even one near us that I can see!

instead he starts telling me about how
totally focusing on his first committed love
relationship has helped him to get into
recovery from his addiction

before I can say "Isn't that sort of obsessive
focus an expression of addiction," a packed subway
train pulls up, and a young celebrity gets off

he and I are happy to see each other as it's been
a long time, but he begins to get rather too intimate
with me, and I gently but firmly distance myself
as I know he not only has a lover but is married

though part of me wishes otherwise,
I realize neither of these men offers
anything helpful or appealing, in fact
they're impeding my progress

so now which way should I go? pay the price and continue
to wander where I've already been, or take a free shot
and explore those sunny but unknown city streets

[narrative on a dream of 7-20-15. I've probably noted this about my narratives (and almost all other writing I do about dreams): it ultimately goes a bit beyond what I recall, to my conscious reaction to it. I.e., to some part of what I began to hear the dream saying as I wrote about it. Photo "Over & Over" (7-12-15 004v2b) by Roswila]

MELTDOWN (photomorph) & "awaiting rain..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

awaiting rain
from heavily humid air
oppressive promise

[non-dream haiku written 7-21-15. Wrote this yesterday, and still no rain for us (Santa Barbara area of drought ridden CA), while inland and to the southeast of us is getting soaked. I even saw lots of promising clouds over the mountains again this morning. Yeah, right. But at least the tease today doesn't also include very high humidity. THE LAUNCH PAD (photomorph) & THE MAN AND I (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE MAN AND I

the man and I each
care for a different big baby,
solemnly swearing
to protect our charge from all
threats that may come its way

each baby then lobs
a hot stream of anger across
the room at the other,
even as they do the man and I
realize those streams will collide ...

and bounce right back on their big baby senders!
we rush to pull our charges out of their own ways

[two tanka and a two-liner on a dream of 7-20-15. Could this dream be any more pointed? (Thank you, Chandler. Yeah, I've seen too many "Friends" reruns recently.) Of course, there may be more in it that will come to me as I go about my day. However, as it stands now it's a timely reminder, with some interesting (it's begun to open up a little more as I've been typing this) permutations. CAMOUFLAGE (photomorph) & APPEARANCES (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

APPEARANCES

the field's asprout with
neat rows of number sevens
all deeply rooted
yet a good tug on any one seven
and it comes right out of the earth

ah, now I remember, in the Tarot deck
a seven may mean "appearances deceive"

[tanka and two-liner on a dream of 7-19-15. I did a lengthy post a while back on the Seven of Pentacles in the Tarot to one of my Tarot blogs. And among many meanings was the above idea of deceptive appearances. This dream, however, goes past that to the idea that all the sevens in the deck may carry this meaning as a possibility. Something to think on and watch for in readings that I do for myself. But the heart of this little dream is its "message" to me personally. I've been living with some painfully entrenched understandings for a long time. Maybe they, too, are deceptive. Photomorph "Camouflage" (5-1-13 12644ev4) by Roswila]

THE THUNDER SPEAKS (photomorph) & ANOTHER DAY OF DROUGHT (non-dream tanka & haiku pair) by Roswila

ANOTHER DAY OF DROUGHT

when was the last time
I exulted over thunder,
perhaps in childhood,
even as now I'd love to wander
through dripping wet high weeds

yet this thunder brings hope
as do the few fat rain drops
exploding in the dust

[non-dream tanka and haiku, the first sketchy draft written while it was still thundering yesterday, 7-18-15. We didn't get any real rain, just those sprinkled drops. I may be stating the obvious but this also turned out to be an unintended metaphor for my personal life right now. Photomorph "The Thunder Speaks" (7-3-13 008v2b) by Roswila]
