FRAZZLED (photomorph) & NOTHING (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

NOTHING

Linus* has nothing
on me: see how I cling to these
fantasies of you,
all tattered and faded now, but
still somehow oddly comforting

NIGHT SONG (photomorph) & TWEETS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

TWEETS

what do others know about
this isolating ignorance I suffer
of which I haven't a clue?
or is knowing not the point at all,
is it simply (or not so simply)
the living that matters?
what difference if I tap
the deepest levels
of loneliness, sure of my
unlovability when the sun's
at my back, that palm leans
at a charmingly loopy angle,
the sky signals of much
needed rain, and I'm about
to get to my feet yet one
more time and walk on,
the tweets of birds
tickling my heart awake
like tiny fingers

LOST TO THE NIGHT (photomorph) & THE SWEET BEAST (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE SWEET BEAST

another morning
waking to the same beast of tears
rattling her cage bars,
this beast of forever yearning
that haunts every waking hour

a wild sweet creature,
with large dark eyes and little hands
always reaching out
between the bars, petitioning:
for release, for sustenance, for love

twisting and wounding
the heart of witness with each gesture
of her beast fingers

sadly, she can not be allowed her freedom
just look at the damage she does contained

and there's not even
any way to offer comfort to this pitiful
wild dumb creature
shaking the bars of her cage as she
pleads wordlessly but eloquently,

unable to comprehend there's no release
from her cold, empty prison of yearning

DECLINE (photo) & BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE

he looks so young I almost don't
recognize this uncle I've loved
from earliest childhood,
but ultimately felt abused by

and now he stands here, knowing
full well I'm caught between
the devil and the deep blue because
I know he's dying, so how can I
do anything but be compassionate
and take responsibility
for everything, as I've always done

embracing my fate this time involves
first listening to his plan to crash
his car into the front entrance of
the home he'd so artfully renovated
to bring it down "the way the Twin
Towers were," then watching him
actually crash the car before
I can even ask why

the entire, two story, white,
wood frame building shudders
but does not collapse, at least not yet,
and I wonder if there's time left
to suggest that, OK, he's dying and won't
need this home he so carefully refurbished,
but would he like to leave it to charity?
it would bring in a pretty penny ...

but I quickly recall, even as the house
shudders frightfully again, that charity
never mattered much to him, just
what he wanted to do at any
particular moment

and for his last show it's very clear
that what he wants is
to bring down the house

[free verse poem based on a dream of 3-2-17. This was one of my actual Uncle's (who died quite some time ago). Our relationship -- at least as I experienced it -- is pretty much encapsulated in the first stanza. Of course, the dream represents much more than that, including aspects of myself. it seemed much fuller
seen from a corner of the eye
phantom day moon

BRANCHING OUT (photo) & "they cannot prune you..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

they cannot prune you
much more, dearest jacaranda,
for what will be left
to greet the growing season,
to fully embrace the sun

[non-dream tanka written 2-8-17. And they've done several more prunings since I wrote this tanka. I've not ever watched this tree through a winter into spring before, so maybe this is what's needed and appropriate. But I sure wince each time I see more cuttings on the grass beneath it and look up into further thinned out branches. Photo "Branching Out" (2-27-17 018v3) by Roswila]

ON THE HEELS OF THE DAY (photo) & "today even bliss..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

today even bliss
trails darkness in its wake,
as if what's drowning
in the depths grasps desperately
after the rainbow colors of joy

[non-dream tanka written 1-30-17. Still not sure about this one; it's been tweaked many times since first written over a month ago. But it reflects the day I've just had, so here 'tis, darkness trailing it and all. Photo "On the Heels of the Day" (1-9-17 002v5) by Roswila]
