BEGGARED BY THE MOON (photo) & THE BETTER QUESTION (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE BETTER QUESTION

she falls asleep asking her dreams
for help: what's with this on-going
and intense increase in her old lady
crankiness? living in constant fear
of biting off someone's head just
won't do! feeling so vulnerable
that defensive anger she must
choke back is her go-to
response to almost any
situation ... no, this will
not do, not do at all ...

... the dream is sweet and intimate,
(and oh-so-welcome!) his body
and hers entwined in a long yearned
for rise to night-lighting heat ...

... sheesh! she wakes enough as she
turns over to note the answer
she'd received: why not tell her
she needs to take an energizing
long stroll sans her walker, across
the space dust on the surface
of the full moon, or why not Mars?
either would be more obtainable

maybe the better question to ask
her dreams would be: how can one
learn to live in a principled way
with what can't be changed

[free verse poem on a dream of 7-14-17. What I did by asking my dreams for something just before falling asleep is called "incubating a dream." I almost always get a dream response. Photo "Beggared by the Moon" (10-27-15 002v6) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

WHAT CAN BE MADE OF THIS? (photomorph) & SCULPTING (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SCULPTING

yes, I know, I know, she says,
it's an awfully weighty mix
with which to sculpt a life,
as she molds the wet mass
between her still strong
and agile fingers,
slapping it heavily
down with each change
of perspective she tries

he smiles, amused, as if
indulging a favorite child:
OK, OK, but that's only
because you're not folding
any air into it at all

[free verse poem on a dream of 7-13-17. Would not have given that famous red cent I'd have a dream like this last night. I went to bed in one of the worst states of mind I've been in in ages, and that's saying something. So, once again, I'm grateful to the dream world. Photomorph "What Can Be Made of This?" APRICOT MOON (photo) & IN THE MIRROR (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE MIRROR

part sister, part demon
you visit nightly
draped in sleep,
a child playing dress-up
before her mother's mirror

you take on facets
that beg reflection,
friend or traitor,
whimsical or sad

as each in turn
finds full embrace
in the moon-like silver
of the mirror

[poem written during late night wakefulness, dream influenced, 4-11-07. This over ten year old poem I chose to re-post today (for lack of anything else) is one that I like, yet feel puzzled by. It's as if I just about get a grip on something and it slips away. Of course, that's certainly appropriate with a dream influenced piece. Yet (this may sound like a contradiction) a poem needs to be clear in its unclarity. And I don't think this one has that sort of necessary clarity. But, I still like it. :-) Photo "Apricot Moon" (10-27-15 034v3a) by Roswila]

WAITING FOR SUNRISE (photomorph) & TRIO SANS BRIO (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

TRIO SANS BRIO

three intuitions
line up, one right next to
the gloomy other,
as if to say "See, we were right,
it's not ever going to be"

odd to stand here
knowing these three sad intuitions
are coming as true
as any, confirming this early
warning system's accuracy

yet almost to wish it had misread the future,
had just this once, been unmistakably wrong,

and that he's right here, expressing his desire
while the future lights up as if under sunrise

MIDNIGHT TAKE OFF (photo) & IT'S IN THE WIND (dream narrative) by Roswila

IT'S IN THE WIND

the handsome one of the group that keeps
passing me in the night as I search the same
street corner, again and again, for my lost purse,
starts talking to me (after all, we've been making eyes
at each other on each pass) and first thing he says after
a perky "Hi," is "No matter how we look, we're not human,
my buddies and I," then he waits a breath as he bobbles in
the air to see if I'm absorbing this news, and continues "Yes,
we live in the air; born and bred here, on the wind; but we're
not the romantic sort that just goes where the wind blows us ...
not at all, when necessary, as the wind changes or slows, we
put more elbow grease into our flying and we get where
we want to despite the wind;" I start to ask what sorts
of places they like to go but he's already taking off
(he and his friends) for parts unknown; and I
wonder why they circled around me on
the high breezes so many times, or
maybe I'm just trying to find
meaning in an accidental
pattern of the winds
they chose to ride
with tonight

[narrative on a dream of 7-9-17. Those middle lines are pretty long. So if the lines of the poem aren't in a neat "curve" on the right, you might try temporarily decreasing the percentage of your "zoom" a bit (i.e., decrease the size of your viewed font). NOTHING LEFT BUT SWEEPINGS (photomorph) & IN THE CLOSET (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE CLOSET

oh no, not this damn
closet again! if I'd known
I'd not have come in,
not have taken the big chance
and opened an unfamiliar door

ah well, done is done
and now as I'm calming down
and look at what's here,
I see it has much less stuff
than it's ever had in it before

seems the work I did
cleaning it out in the past
was quite effective ...
but, sigh, now you barge in!
is there no escaping your threat?

these unexpressed, if also un-acted
upon, sexual feelings toward me

feelings I don't return, nor would if I could,
we're blood relatives, for cryin' out loud

I hold my breath as you reach one long arm
around me; "Thank all the Deities!" I think,

when you pick up some small white shelves
that had been propped against the back wall

you comment on how neat the closet looks
now and how spacious, which surprises me

I'd not known you were even aware this closet
existed, much less actually been inside it

my surprise morphs into a wistful thought:
maybe I could toss him out, too, forever

after all, I've become rather too expert over
the years at cleaning out this old closet

ASS-OVER-TEAKETTLE (photomorph) & THE FACE-PLANT (re-post of mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE FACE-PLANT

she's ordered to dim
her lights or they'll ask her
to leave this house
she sadly obliges them
and promptly does a face-plant

her neon colors
had long been her only buoys
yet her offspring held
close to her chest are not hurt
by this sudden toppling

finding the tumble
amusing, her kids explore
the new viewing angle
while she catches her breath
and harbors her slew of babes

how will she stay upright now without brilliant lights
to float her down the rough path like helium balloons

from this low place the only way she can see
is to take the risk and stand up lightless

[tanka series with a pair of two-liners on a dream of 10-24-14. I came across this poem wandering through slews of old posts, trying to find something I felt like putting up again (no viable dream recall from last night, or other poem in progress). It's one I didn't recall at all at first, neither as dream nor as poem, and that's highly unusual. But as I re-read it I had a vague memory of that toppling and the relief that the babes weren't hurt.
