SINGING FOR THE STARS (photo) & A PERILOUS GAME (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A PERILOUS GAME

dream one:

that would-be beau of mine (I don't know why we
haven't gone that way yet) inquires in his usual flirty
fashion if I know "Wally's," the upstairs restaurant
that has such a relaxed ambience, and when I nod "yes"
he leans much closer and almost whispers in my ear
"Would you like to have a leisurely dinner
with me there, right now?"

the night time city streets around us quiet suddenly,
not even the murmur of tires rises as if the city
holds its breath beneath the small music
of the stars while, with thumping heart,
I say what feels like a long fated yes

dream two:

a young dark haired, middle European woman competes
on T.V.'s "Jeopardy," embracing two light brown,
cardboard cutouts against her breasts like babies
and smiling almost beatifically

and indeed, she explains, they represent her infants,
the ones she just gave birth to here in the States,
her double joy re-doubled when the government
allowed her to stay here to raise them

and then, she adds brightly in her charming accent,
that's why she's here: using her deep memory
and quick intelligence to support her brand new
family by competing in this perilous game

[free verse poem on two dreams from 4-15-16. As I know I've mentioned here before, twins often represent something new is in the offing. I hope so. Since I turned 72 in January I've had this thirst (in just about every way) for newness. I almost feel like an adolescent again, with all its accompanying angst, as well. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

AT THE HEART OF TURQUOISE (photomorph) & THE ELIXIR OF TURQUOISE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE ELIXIR OF TURQUOISE

he hands me a little bottle, "Elixir of Turquoise,"
and when I thank him he corrects the name
I use, saying gently, "I'm called z.z."

how odd that I never knew he had a nickname
and now only learn it when he's moving on,
what else about him did I miss getting to know
sad, is it not, how connections sometimes deepen
just as they're about to be broken

and the gift of turquoise he's leaving me is exactly
what I didn't know I wanted until I saw it nestled
in the palm of his large hand: a drink from an ancient
master stone's well of healing

then I notice the disclaimer label on the side
of the golden brown, stoppered bottle that reads
in the tiniest of print: "Life's not about getting
what you want, it's about living the life you have"

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-13-16. Turquoise is actually referred to in gem lore as a master healer, which I didn't recall until I googled it this morning. However, "master healer" was referenced in the dream so I may very well have read about it long ago when I (kinda, sorta) believed in the healing properties of gem stones and their elixirs. PETROGLYPH (photomorph) & MY PETROGLYPH (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

MY PETROGLYPH

as he walks toward me back lit
by late evening's glow I'm struck
again by his silhouette's resemblance
to that broad shouldered petroglyph
design that filled the center
of an old tee shirt of mine
"You're my petroglyph,"
I think wistfully with that little
leap in my stomach that always
comes with a sighting of him,
raising that yearning once more
to explore the unknowns
of his flesh and mind, and not
be left alone again with this hot impression
brushed across the breast of my desire,
tantalizingly ancient, and less
substantial than a shadow

-- non-dream free verse poem written 4-13-16. The photo above is a slight re-working today of an old one of mine (my skills have improved since first editing it), "Petroglyph" (9-16-11 112853v2).

WAITING FOR RAIN (photomorph) & IN A RATHER DRY TIME (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IN A RATHER DRY TIME

dreams fall through the night
into my sleep less and less
these days, well, actually it's recall
that's missing not the dreams, but
either way dreams don't come with me
into waking very often right now,
which would be nothing worrisome
were not droughts of all kinds around,
the least rain shower a matter
of conversation and even a bit
of celebration at the dinner table,
and my long starved body in imminent
danger of falling into a wilted,
whimpering heap
at the feet of that juicy man

NEEDLE WORK (photomorph) & A BLAND DREAM (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A BLAND DREAM

it seems like such a bland, even
pointless dream, not worth the effort
to work up into writing

but maybe (as has happened before)
once begun a point will start to surface,
a needle with which to stitch a passable design:

the famous actor, son of an equally
successful actor, applies
for a large bank loan

the paperwork is mountainous,
with folder after folder holding
the various levels and stages
to this financial transaction,
each one a separate, sub-loan
(as it were) to be attended to
as if it stood alone

it's all very well organized and suits
the man's approach to things,
if not his wife's, who's very casual
and not at all what one might expect
a celebrity's spouse to be
(a bit frumpy, if lively)

the actor thanks the bank manager
for all their work and quickly adds
that though he doesn't anticipate his wife
drawing on any of the loan's levels,
she does have the same rights as he
to use of the funds

and remaining unspoken: that she also bears
the same responsibility for the over all
debt whether or not she avails herself
of any of the money

and maybe that's the sharpest point,
the needle that punctures if misunderstood
or denied: we're all in this together,
with equal responsibility, no matter
how little or much we may ask of others

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-11-16. Well, I gave it a shot (is that a needle pun? smile) but I don't think it really works. Still, it's my effort for the day, so I'm posting it anyway. BTW, I do think the point I finally got from this "bland" dream is important for me to remember. I just wish I could find a better way to end it, i.e. without making the insight I got explicit. Maybe I could if I put it aside for a day or two. But I'd rather post it as is and move on. Photomorph "Needle Work" (3-24-16 010v3) by Roswila]

SINGING FOR THE SUN (photo) & ON SINGING (free verse poem) by Roswila

ON SINGING

dreaming of singing "...out of my dreams
and into your arms I long to fly ..."* in full
soprano voice she surfaces toward morning

how easy it once was, in her long ago
youth, to reach those top notes
she just nailed in sleep all night long
in song after song, no harder than retrieving
a box from the back of a top shelf
for a short roommate

but even if old age has limited her reach
she can go on singing all those songs
and their high notes in her mind

and she indulges in a wistful
and thoroughly welcome
mental simulation,
a waking dream resounding
as if from the sun's bright speaker
like the soundtrack to an old
movie musical

[free verse poem prompted by my singing various songs throughout the dreams of 4-10-16. *This snatch of lyrics is from "Out of My Dreams" (in the musical "Oklahoma") and was the dream singing that trailed me into waking. Photomorph "Singing for the Sun" (3-28-16 009v2) by Roswila]

STRATIFICATION (photomorph) & ONLY THREE OF THE MANY (about dreams) by Roswila

ONLY THREE OF THE MANY

dream one:

I'm drawn to and a bit scared of that
male figure, he's both dangerous
and not, his ugliness rather beautiful --
metallic aqua lines wandering like an ancient
river over the almost skinless, softly blushing
landscape of his face and neck --
his presence abstracted but still managing
to telegraph a hard won self-acceptance

dream two:

and that woman's all too familiar,
demanding I find the proper addresses
for a huge list of organizations instantly,
yes, she's an Hispanic female Judge,
inundated with work, who refuses
to waver or slow fearing her failure
would let down all Hispanic women,
but all this does is force others to fail her
such as I, who cannot move any faster
given the realities of the physical world

dream three:

each scenario in turn begins to open like a living
nested doll, just a hesitant peek inside
making me dizzy as I realize how much
aliveness it contains, what further
colors and shapes anxiously line up,
awaiting their turns to speak
