THE SHOW'S OVER (photo) & SHE'S NO NEWBIE (dream narrative) by Roswila

SHE'S NO NEWBIE

she's just been accepted as the newest member
of a famous American rock band and copes
with the other members' ignorance
of her previous success in Britain,
all of them assuming she's a rank newbie

she comforts herself by singing
"Do you know the way to San Jose?"*
over and over, in her mind
like a movie soundtrack

but she's nothing if not resilient and patient,
her youth standing her in good stead
within this group of aging male musicians
("Do you know ...?)

one of the friendlier members leads
her to a closed door, at which he knocks,
gently so as not to startle their sleeping boss

the boss yanks open the door,
("... the way to San Jose?")
clearly large and in charge if still
somewhat sleepy, and zaps
everyone in the room with a withering look,
until he sees their newest member
whom he gestures into his space,
smiling at her as he starts to close the door

but not before he tosses out an ancient
black typewriter, saying to the rest of the band,
"Here, get to work!" ("Do you know the way ...?")

it thuds as it lands, then skids noisily across
the heavily waxed parquet floor, ending the dream

[narrative on a dream of 11-13-15. I think a loud noise may have actually woken me up, but I don't recall one. I only know I woke up suddenly. And I did dream I was singing that song at various points. Though I was more an observer of this dream, i.e. not really "embodied" in any of the characters. * Lyrics to "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" by Burt Bacharach. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

SINGING FOR THE SUN (photo) & FITTING (dream tanka pair) by Roswila

FITTING

it's a lovely dress
a salmon pink with spangles
no California
sunset starting to share stars
could be any lovelier

appropriate
for strolling in these woods?
probably not
but who cares, isn't beauty
always fitting to the moment?

LEANING TO AQUA (photomorph) & INVISIBLE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

INVISIBLE

OK, another
of the questions my dreams
have been prompting:
why, pray tell, would I ever want
to make myself invisible?

when all too often
I already feel unnoticed
by a great many folk
yet, here I am showing her
how to become unseeable

and with great glee
as if it's something impressive
"Lookit! I just pull
this clear plastic string, fast
and hard, and voila! No me!"

I go on saying
that it does sometimes take
several attempts
before one's hand, then arms,
and so on, begin to fade away

and that for some reason, one's fingernails reappear first,
my shiny aqua nails coming back slowly, proving my point

but she's not at all impressed by my bid for attention,
by this attempt to be proud of not being seen

THE HEART OF SHADOW (photo) & THE SINGER (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE SINGER

the boy looks human,
so very, very human, with large
limpid dark brown eyes
and the face of a proverbial
angel, almost glowing as he sings

but we're all aware
he's not human, yet could not care
less as we listen
and watch him sing, his eyes welling
with the sad song's deep emotion

we're each reminded acutely of love we've lost,
of that coming into and out of being we endure

he ends his painfully beautiful singing
on the refrain "It's you that I love ... "

the truth of his feeling going beyond the personal
or even the human itself, out into the universal,

and all the way down to subatomic uncertainties,
the vibrating continuity to it all

[two tanka capped by four two-liners on a dream of 11-10-15. One influence on this dream: I'm attending a memorial concert tonight. However, there's much more to this, that I just want to live with and feel. And not analyze endlessly as is my usual wont. Photomorph "The Heart of Shadow" (10-24-15 010v2) by Roswila]

TAKE OFF (photomorph) & THE TRUE QUESTION (dream tanka pair) by Roswila

THE TRUE QUESTION

new pink satin slippers,
dinnerware of real silver,
and now this long trip
through Europe by boat and train
with return via private jet

the question is not
why is she so demanding
(he clearly gives her
everything she hits him up for)
but why he never just says "no"

TATTERED HEART (photomorph) & "she freezes him out..." (non-dream senryu) by Roswila

she freezes him out:
his anger's protective heat,
hurt its stillborn heart

[non-dream senryu written 10-28-15. From Haiku Society of America: "A senryu is a poem, structurally similar to haiku, that highlights the foibles of human nature, usually in a humorous or satiric way. ... A senryu may or may not contain a season word or a grammatical break." I'll add that often it's difficult to say whether a poem is a haiku or senryu, given that many modern writers do not as a rule use season words in haiku. I'm one of them. A season word will only show up by "accident" (so to speak) in my haiku. I.e., not by intent. However, I do employ a "grammatical break" in senryu (called a kigo in haiku) as it's become ingrained in my way of writing in such small forms. Actually, I do not set pen to paper to write a senryu. I'm always drafting a haiku. Only later do I begin to think it might more accurately be called a senryu. Lastly, as to this senryu, I observed the interaction written about from across a room, as if it were a silent movie. Photomorph "Tattered Heart" (10-27-15 022v4d) by Roswila]

THE ROSE SINGS (photo) & THE ORANGE TREE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE ORANGE TREE

I hurry to Dad's side to tell him
about what I've accomplished

he's lying down under a fruited
orange tree, looking rather
youthful, and I lie close by him
in the late afternoon quiet

I chatter on happily at length
and although I could easily
find more to say (it's so unusual
to have his undivided attention)
I realize he's beginning to nod out

"OK, Dad," I say softly
"You're ready for sleep, aren't you?"
he manages a small smile
before sliding quickly
into the arms of Morpheus

I now can't recall what I'd so
excitedly shared with him,

and only know I'm grateful
to have been unconflicted
about seeking him out,
and even more rare,
to have felt safe in the circle
of his attention
