THE TEACHER (photo) & DANCING AROUND (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

DANCING AROUND

so here I am
back in the dance studio
at her invitation
to rehearse a routine
I haven't even been taught

and as usual, she's ignoring
my questions, and going on at length
about something other than the dance

consistent with my recent resolve
to not assume anything,
in any situation, I try and try again
to make my ignorance clear
and get the info I need, nay,
we need since it's ultimately
to be a pas de deux

when my tactful queries bounce off
her chattering like so many
breeze tossed dry leaves, I try
moving in closer but to no effect,
then attempt to joke my way
into her attention,
to break her enchanted stare
in the studio mirror

then for the first time ever
it occurs to me: why do I feel
so obligated not only to take part
in this dance but to do it well,
especially since she clearly doesn't care
to teach me, nattering on as she dances
about something else all together

why hang in
where I might as well
be invisible

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-4-15. After finishing the first draft I thought rather mordantly, maybe I need to break my own stare into that studio mirror. And there is that to this dream. However, it's more about ending relationships that aren't working. Along with other issues, on other levels. Photo "The Teacher" (11-27-15 001v3) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

FLIGHT OF THE DRAGON (photomorph) & IN MY FACE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

IN MY FACE

ah! I remember
a Medusa mask, I must
have it stashed somewhere ...
no, it was too costly to pack and ship
so I gave it away when I moved here

but here's an as yet
unassembled dragon mask
fierce and colorful
still begging to become three-
dimensional and take on the world

I could spray paint my hair into fiery strands
and wear my scale-patterned green kaftan

sigh, I can't imagine wearing this dragon face
for an entire Halloween masquerade party

no matter it's eye catching, yet totally masks me
(and ever so close to my dragon loving heart),

I can no longer tolerate my own hot breath
coming back in my face, not even for cover

[mix of tanka and two-liners on a dream of 12-3-15. This was a largely realistic dream. That Medusa mask is one I assembled from a book of masks and did give it away for the above reason when I moved from NYC to CA. And I still have that mask book and keep thinking to make the dragon. Though I'd simply hang it on a wall, as I did the Medusa mask back in NYC. Also, I do love dragons, and once had quite a collection of dragon figurines. Although I wore a Kabuki mask from the book on my first Halloween in CA, I learned then I really can't bear the heat. This dream's deeper meaning is too much to go into here. Suffice it to say it's taking a (non-mask image) insight I had not long before going to sleep, a bit further. Photomorph "Flight of the Dragon" (11-24-15 053v2d) by Roswila]

GHOST OF A CHANCE (photomorph) & ALMOST (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ALMOST

maybe not as dramatic
but certainly the same at some
momentary level of frustration,
each memory of the night's dreams
rises like a sneeze that promises
but ultimately just isn't there

memory's emptiness closing over
the last teasing of recovery
like a pond surface
after a tossed pebble

an inquiry rippling outward:
was there ever anything there
to begin with

maybe almost's
all there ever is ...
at all

FLARE UP (photomorph) & SKEWED DIGNITY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SKEWED DIGNITY

at first it's an ailing old man
we're taking care of (my vague,
long term roommate and I)

then it's those awesome,
adorable tiny horses of the sea,
right out of an old dream
I still clearly recall (how's that
for a dream come true?)

fire (or is it only fiery heat?)
becomes an immediate danger,
the temperature keeps rising ...

ah hah! I almost stopped at "temper..."
and there you have it, a Freudian slip
upends the mystery, it's legs
flailing in the air as it tries
to re-establish its flaming
dignity in the face
of such a fall

my roommie and I do well to harbor
this old man and these palm-size horses
from a skewed dignity that burns
everything in its vicinity

LEADEN HEART (photomorph) & TWISTED (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

TWISTED

omigosh, these are
notes she clearly doesn't want
anyone to read
I've done the same, keeping hidden
records of things so I won't forget

but I read them anyway, little guilty pangs
brushed off like so much dust on her binder

hm, she liked that workshop that I could not stand,
and from what she's written, others enjoyed it, too

not an unfamiliar situation for me ... maybe it is me
after all, some basic flaw in my way of perceiving

not a pleasant thought to wake to in a chilly morning,
the covers twisted like a lengthy impossible argument

POINTED (photomorph) & GAME OF TRIANGLES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

GAME OF TRIANGLES

they're playing that game again!
she's criticizing me from a cold remove,
as he watches with the sort of smile
that only a hyper-observant
person would see

then she moves in for the kill (so to speak),
starting to flirt with me in that way
some women have when they've
caught the scent, and his watchfulness now
so acute one could almost be cut by it

and as ever I have no idea what the point
is to this recurrent game of theirs
(though I do seem to be hoisted on it
each time nevertheless)

will it ever become clear
what they aim to find out
with their repeated triangulations

GANESH CHATURTHI ALTAR 2015 (photo) & STOLEN (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

STOLEN

oh no, I sort of knew
I shouldn't leave it
out in the open
and now they've stolen
my favorite Ganesh statuette
(the one with gems for eyes,
that twinkle in any light)

it's true they've left a brightly
painted ceramic figurine
of The Little Mermaid in His place

but how could they think that
finding a Disney cartoon
where my heart used to be
could make up for this theft?
