RIDING ON THE TIDE (photomorph) & FROM A BALCONY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

FROM A BALCONY

the surf-like sounds of rolling
tires on the street below engage her tired
focus as she closes her eyes to further
encourage the fantasy of a soothing
seaside sojourn after a busy day in
paradise building this necessary
sand castle called a life while
harboring a hot thirst for that
man who dangles before her mind's
eye like a juicy apple just
out of reach

[non-dream free verse poem written 4-8-16. The word paradise is meant in the usual way and also as a reference to a nickname for Santa Barbara County, CA (where I live). Photomorph "Riding on the Tide" (3-3-16 002v10f) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

DYING OF HUNGER (photomorph) & STARVED (free verse poem on a dream) by Roswila

STARVED

it's no surprise she's starved
for touch, for being touched, that is

what drags her stomach suddenly down
as if she'd swallowed a lead sinker?

that she needs to touch even more,
the palms of her hands weeping

as she recalls the feel of stroking,
of giving while receiving

OUT OF NOTHING (photomorph) & BUSKERS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BUSKERS

an odd man (or is he a woman?)
recruits her into his group
(visualize a Fellini-esque band of buskers)

they want her pretty face for a photo shoot
they're planning, and start working
busily around her head

she begins to think she's been suckered again
when they pry beneath the shiny metal rings
spinning around her brain cage

revealing a resounding emptiness, a hollow
where most folks' brains would be, yes,
she thinks defensively, I'm quite the air head

but then finds she's actually very relieved
to be exposed, Saturn-like, with all these rings
spinning smoothly around emptiness

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-6-16. The major association for that Saturn reference is to my astrology sign (my sun is in Capricorn, which is ruled by Saturn). Basically I think this dream/poem is another on the theme of "not knowing." And is, therefore, rather positive. Photomorph "Out of Nothing" (3-28-16 008v2a) by Roswila]

ROUNDING IT OUT (photomorph) & ROUND HEELS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ROUND HEELS

I've heard the expression "round heels" used
for a female who's a certain kind of pushover (ahem)

and though I've not heard this old term applied
to a man, slanted differently it fits you all too well

for each time you rock back on your heels away
from me in haste to beat a retreat I just don't get,

your heels smooth a bit rounder, making your next
rock-away from me all the more likely and quick

leaving me to stand disappointed, the rise of hope
at meeting up with you, slowly making its own retreat

DESIRE'S CUP (photomorph) & THIS DESIRE (free verse poem) by Roswila

THIS DESIRE

"Basta!!" as it's said in Italian, or better,
"Enough already!!" as my New York City
friends of years past would say

No more dreams that poke rudely
into the bottomless well of my desire,
scraping up images for the pain
I already get all too clearly, and don't
need or want impressively dressed up
only to meet an oblivious day

where's the openness, the sense
that nothing's set in stone,
no concrete memorial's yet erected
over this sleep twisting,
day dizzying desire in all its
labyrinthine layers

to put it more succinctly
and make an end to this rant,
where has simply accepting
not knowing gone?
the way of the dodo bird?
extincted each time I try to figure out
what's coming, instead of waiting for it?

[free verse poem, non-dream though partly in reaction to the focus of many recent dreams. That question in the last two lines is derived from a bit of T.V. show dialogue: "Stop trying to figure out what's coming, and wait for it!" Photomorph "Desire's Cup" (4-9-12 11648v2) by Roswila]

WATER BIRTH (photomorph) & BETWEEN TWO BIRTHS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BETWEEN TWO BIRTHS

my father's busily denying any upset
that mother's leaving him to have their baby

she's packing her things on the seat of her walker
and there's an awful lot of stuff to fit on it

I offer to get a large shopping bag to put in all in
so it won't slide around and fall off once in motion

then I turn back to dad, concerned for him given
his history of having been abandoned, over and over

yes, the present's vulnerable belly has it's imperatives
that can't be stopped, as it nurtures another unknown

but the past also presses forward, just as needy
and only seemingly already in our hands

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-3-16. These two were my actual father and stepmother (whom I called mother), both long deceased. Photomorph "Water Birth" (3-10-10 10046v4b) by Roswila]

the sky doesn't need
