DOPPLEGANGER (photo) & THE TWIN OUT OF TIME (dreamku series) by Roswila

THE TWIN OUT OF TIME

the grandfatherly
actor takes on his last
action hero role
only this time it's for real
he's fighting for his life

a humanoid from
another planet nearly
manages to drown him
but he wrestles upward
from the icy lake water

a twin of himself
trails his gasping breakthrough
to the surface,
identical in every way but
yelling in a lost language

synchronicity
has yanked this twin through time
like a hooked fish
out of the ancient fjord in which
he was being forcibly drowned

no one now speaks Bafa,
his barely recognizable
native tongue, but his
attempts to communicate
at least prove his origins

even the stars seem
to lean in closer straining
to learn the meaning
of this eruption from the past
of the famous actor's double

it's known that a twin heralds something new -- this one's
an old man out of time, speaking a forgotten tongue

smiling wryly the actor mutters:
and everything new is old again

[several tanka capped by two two-liners on a dream of 7-4-13. Googling did not come up with anything really pertinent for that odd word "Bafa," except that most results referenced French, which is truly a foreign language to me. The phrase "a man out of time" in the additional sense of there being no time left, is probably the heart of the dream. Although we never know when we'll be out of time and it can happen at any time young or old, living at this end of life does put one more intimately in touch with that fact. That pun at the end on a line in the song by Peter Allen "Everything old is new again" came as I wrote this dreamku, and I have some thinking to do about it. There's more there I think than meets the eye. Here are the actual song lyrics that most strike me:

Be a movie star on your own
And don't throw the past away
You might need it some other rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When everything old is new again

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS): The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, and monoku -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not.

Also please note that a dreamku is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. A dreamku is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku you may do, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, that has been changing for some time now. I now tend to "show" (the dream narrative) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it).

CONTINUUM (photo) by Roswila & "Taking flowers, taking leave" (dream poem) by Guest Poet Joseph Siegel

Taking flowers, taking leave

A Latino neighbor has come by
to cut some deep red roses.
While I could rightfully decry
the leave his act supposes,
in fact I'm glad to see him there
outside my parents' window.
Long-stem roses held with care.
His son looks up to him so.

I offer greetings, but I fear
that sadness overwhelms me.
It's displeasure that they hear,
their careful manner tells me.
How could they know I'm floundering?
My visit's nearly over.
My sorrow, looking round at things,
sees emblems of forever.

[dream poem by guest poet, Joseph Siegel, who can be reached at: ireadpages2@yahoo.com. I hope to post more of his work here in the future. Joseph also has been studying and composing music. You can hear some of his work at this page on SoundCloud.com. (He would like you to know that the Portuguese fado is not his composition, but that he loves that genre of song -- heart-felt music of the people. Also, if you listen through the full cycle of works on the page, you will hear a gentle work of synthesized music, Nebulae -- not his either. Among his original works, he recommends "Dancing on the Sidewalk" and "A Matisse Morning" because the computer-produced piano sound is fairly natural and the pieces are rather cheerful.) PLEASE NOTE: There are many other sorts of daily posts on this blog. The vast majority being my poetry based on dreams with my digital photos accompanying each. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems, scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

RED MOON RISING (photo) & [untitled] (monoku written in a dream) by Roswila

melting a hole in the night huge red moon

[monoku written in a dream on 7-2-13. This monoku was written in phases within a dream about entering statistical records in a computer file. The first try at it was at the beginning of the very first stat file I entered and said only "red moon, full moon." I don't recall subsequent versions that popped up as I entered stats, but it went through several phases. Seems my dreaming mind was of two minds: typing numbers and writing a monoku. The way the monoku writing intruded also reminds me of that repeated line in t.s. eliot's "The Wasteland" -- "HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME" -- with that sense of urgency. Photo "Red Moon Rising" by Roswila; I did not get pix of that recent "super full moon" we had; this photo was my imagining of its visual effect, just now re-colored to go with this monoku]

CORNERED (photo) & [untitled] (dream monoku) by Roswila

the old woman tells me to sit over there time out

[very old dream haiku (meaning it was written before I began developing the dreamku form), reworked into the above monoku, probably in 2006. Blush, I still need this old woman's help sometimes to get away from my own thoughts. Photo "Cornered" by Roswila]

RESISTING THE WIND (photo) & WHAT'S MORE ODD (five dream tanka) by Roswila

WHAT'S MORE ODD

packing to visit
my long-time friend's Mom
is quite a chore --
I neatly fill my suitcase
as it morphs into a small truck

but I've enough junk
to fill it, even so,
with space in the back
for my calico cat
who's clearly against this trip

as if I couldn't
tell by its body posture
it starts objecting --
we have a pleasant verbal
argument as I pack it

I carefully
bend its articulated
joints to fit it in
(molded plastic textures
feel so real these days)

finally content
that it's securely stashed
I pause by the door:
what's more odd than my talking
plastic cat? I don't know its name
