VOICE OF THE SIDEWINDER (photomorph) & THE PICK UP (dream tanka pair) by Roswila


THE PICK UP

she picks up a large
black and white furry snake
a honey-hued one
left in the mud as she puts
the snake in her woven basket

after the swamp hike
with her former friend, the snake
lifts the basket lid
at a loopy angle saying:
humans are as crazy as we


[dream tanka pair written and posted in March 2009, revised & re-posted 11-22-14. This is one of those rare dreams of mine that only gained some satisfying clarity when the title occurred to me today, almost five years after having it. But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

[non-dream monoku (one line haiku) written late 2005 or early 2006. This was posted here quite some time ago as a three liner/haiku but I realized today it's really a monoku. BLUE EYES IN THE RAIN (photomorph) & WASHED AWAY ... (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila


WASHED AWAY
(or: A Visit with Bill Clinton)

it's been a long time
since I've seen Bill, except
in the media
and I hadn't realized
how much I'd been missing him

we sit together
just us in the room, he looking
through the window
at the city below, neither
of us feeling the need to talk

he seems healthy
and I wonder -- surprisingly
for the first time --
how someone survives an office
such as the one he held

and I'm overwhelmed
by a flood of empathy:
the impossible
weight of decisions, and of
endless opinions and conflicts

however did he
do the everyday things
during those times
such as enjoy a true laugh
or go readily to sleep

he becomes aware
of my tears and embraces
them with a soft smile
we continue to sit without
speaking but deeply communing

our habitual and casual way of relating
washed away by this new level to our connection


[tanka series capped by a two-liner on a dream of 11-19-14. I occasionally dream about presidents. Former President Clinton has been one of those recurrent dream visitors, though usually in a more flirtatious interaction. I've tended to relate to President dreams as being about my animus. Very simply put the animus is "an inner masculine part of the female personality in the analytic psychology of C. G. Jung." It's also said to be part of the collective -- as opposed to individual -- unconscious. So a President would fill that bill (if you'll pardon the pun). WHICH WAY HOME (photomorph) & THE SIDEBOARD (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila


THE SIDEBOARD

yes, she really wants
to take this huge old sideboard
to her new rooms,
the last furniture left to move
from this basement apartment

as she stares at its
dark wood and white marble counter
she ponders paths,
knowing she can do this,
she's slid its bulk around before

as long as the way's
relatively smooth and level
edging it forward
will present no problem, she just
needs to breathe deep and pace herself

but which path is best
she's aware of two, one direct,
one gently curving
but she's not walked either of them
nudging her heavy sideboard

she'll just have to start down a path at random,
there's little time left to complete this move

besides it's much better to be doing, thinking
has no legs to stand on, much less to walk

Until those last two lines jumped out of my pencil early this morning, I really thought maybe I should leave whatever that sideboard represents behind. However, I then realized that the sideboard is a symbol of my own body. (It's an apt image as sideboards are connected to food.) And I definitely hear the urgency about doing more walking. I've been thinking way too much about how best to incorporate more walks into my days, where to walk, etc. Seems I just need to do it, already. All this if I want to make it to the new home of a fully slimmed down and healthier body. (Had I mentioned? I've now lost 78 lbs.) CROSSING OVER (photomorph) & GUARDING THE BORDER (dream tanka series) by Roswila


GUARDING THE BORDER

the border crossing
from the turbulent night world
into organized day
hums even more than usual
with efficient activity

the guards quietly
accomplish their crucial work
what might mislead
or be unhelpful they change,
or mute, or return to the dark

like this traveler's
black baseball cap, a sure sign
of chemotherapy
and her consequent baldness
that it both warms and covers

the guards "disappear"
her cap, leaving the woman
to cross into day
her bald head glimmering golden
with a hint of new growth


[tanka series on a dream of 11-17-14. In my dream vocabulary hair most often represents thoughts. I find the night/day contrast multi-leveled. E.g., dreams/waking, right brain/left brain, past/present, or unconscious/conscious, and even non-existence/existence. But most of all I see my struggle to develop some "guards at the border," or mental filters if you will. Not to believe everything I think. And that there might be some signs of success. An aside -- the guards also put me in mind of a brain function I read about somewhere called the "left brain interpreter." Its sole function is to balance all the new information with which our brain is flooded, in light of past information. (BTW, as I mentioned here before, maybe the jumble of activity our brains go through in sleep is organized by the left brain interpreter into what we experience as our dreams. ECHOES

her deceased brother's
ghost hovers over each of
the night's divers dreams
peering down as if onto
a table top diorama*

what is it he seeks
this dark hooded shadow
what draws him to these
jumbled reconstructions
of her life's impressions

is it simply form,
that solidity of being
dreams wanly echo,
that still has a pull on him
leading him gently along

a not unwelcome ghost this haunt of her hauntings
