'ROUND 'N 'ROUND (photo) & IN THE RING (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE RING

I'm not sure if he's a doctor but he sounds
like one as he checks me out; his questions
make sense as I hear and answer them, but
they, and my responses to each, by-pass
memory to fall on the carpet of the boxing
ring we stand in; his tentative conclusion,
though, does stick long enough for me to
mentally question it: I'm quite sure I don't
have walking pneumonia, no matter that
little cough I've been having recently; he
then invites me -- in that commanding way
some men have -- to walk along with him
around the ring, and not just walk, but pace
my steps exactly to his and even place them
exactly as he does; without a single second's
hesitation, I do so; it's not like ambling
along the garden path together, nor is it like
dancing, and it's also not difficult, which is
a bit of a surprise given my arthritis and
consequent wobbly way of walking; as he
leads me 'round and 'round this roped-off
area I question what I'm doing, but find
no reason not to do it: it's actually rather
amazing to find I can follow a man's lead
and not have everything fall apart

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-29-17. This dream/poem, even though I just had the dream last night, does not reflect my mood now. Sigh. Wish it did. Right now I don't want to have truck with anyone, much less men. (Yeah, rough morning.) BTW, I do note the contrast between yesterday's dream/poem in which a man "yields" to me, and this one in which I do the "yielding." Of course, today's is set in a boxing ring. So here I think the issue is learning how to fight in a productive, contained way. I might even say that at a another level, it's addressing my difficulty in general with learning from/about a man in a less combative (defensive) way. Whereas yesterday's has to do with seeking a certain openness and vulnerability in a man. Not that I think men aren't vulnerable. It's just they don't let it out! I get it, given how men are socialized but, damn it, it makes a deeper closeness so awfully difficult. ROTFLMAO! That last could be said about me, too. What else am I defensive about anyway, but my intense vulnerability? Photo: 'round 'n 'round (12-2-09 8422ev2a) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

THE LAST STEPS (photo) & ON TREPIDATION (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON TREPIDATION

he's written his first poem and reads it
to me with a mix of trepidation and pride;
I enjoy the childlike bright light radiating
from him as he reads, almost as much as
the poem; when he reaches the end I
immediately realize that the last line should
really be the first as the image he's developed
throughout the poem so carefully, line by line,
would be exquisitely introduced by his final
statement that "the winter light shines on ice
like a promise from the sun," since the reader's
interest would be opened wide by that picture;
I get around my own hesitation based on past
experiences with his resistance to any sort
of suggestion, and tell him of this belief,
carefully prefacing it with "Just a thought ...
your wintery poem's beautiful as is ..."
and to my utter surprise he nearly runs over
my comments with a happy excitement, he
actually agrees with me and is grateful for
my comment: how delightful and strange
for once to have him accept what I've
offered; yes, wonderfully odd that any
man would share from a vulnerable
place and then go even further,
yielding to me with such joy

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-27-17. Sigh, what a wish fulfillment dream! The irony? I think this is what men want from me (probably from women in general). And, yes, it's another in that on-going series of dreams featuring a male of the species. This male is an actual man I know, who was clearly (given various details and associations) a composite of several men now in my life. Photo "The Last Steps" (12-6-17 003v2a) by Roswila]

DANCERS IN THE NIGHT (photo) & VOLCANIC (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

VOLCANIC

like some amorphous creature
of the ocean deep, my passion
for you swirls and dances
in the volcanic heat: come,
take the steamy plunge and raise
this torrid vessel to the surface
where it will surely burst,
it's medley of colors floating
like confetti, down through
the sun bright ocean air

WALL FLOWER (photomorph) & NEVER (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

NEVER

"Better late than never..." has echoed
in her mind the entire day:
this is such horse-pucky, she thinks

she broods further (as she crunches
furiously on a mouthful of M&M's)
that as far as she's concerned never would
have been better than this waking up so
late in life -- a wrinkled and white-haired
Sleeping Beauty -- to this intense yearning
for a male of the species to wander
by and brave the long over-grown
brambles around her

better she'd stayed asleep than this intensity
of longing, and worst of all, the teasings
occasionally tossed over the crumbling wall
by some flirtatious male, like little gifts
of pity for a needy old woman

better never to hope again, and simply watch
as "never" rises through the shadows and debris
of her tortured imaginings, until it settles over
her life, a blanket of numbing acceptance

[non-dream free verse poem written 12-25-17. This is a hoot! I've already moved past the despair in this poem. Of course, there's no guarantee -- none at all -- that it won't return. In fact, my experiences of the past few years almost make that a done deal. But, hell, I'm going to enjoy this respite! BACK FLIP (photomorph) & WHAT A PASS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT A PASS

this is certainly a pass I've never imagined,
nor even had I, would have thought I'd to come to:
where the unmet painful old yearnings toward you are a comfort,
compared to those that other man have left me aswim in, making
drowning feel like a distinct possibility; maybe this rather sere
comfort I find in my affections turning back in your direction
is as simply explained as a gravitation toward the familiar:
at least I'm clear what's unknown about you and that it will stay
that way, out of reach, if still magnetic, and there's no come here,
go away from you, just a steady pull toward what I know you've
never offered, no huge and nearly world shaking surprises
and tensions bursting from you: let me lean my yearnings
silently and softly against you again, my handsome bastion
of unavailability

LOOKING UP THE CHIMNEY (photomorph) & ON THE ROAD: A Christmas Dream (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON THE ROAD
A Christmas Dream

like some latter day Santa Claus
he drives the pick up truck through
the night, not the sky but it might
as well be for he still sets her heart
to flying, and it's still as much
an ancient fairy tale that if she's
good enough she'll get what she wants
from him, but she's far from good, no
not intentionally so, just broken by life
and crazed, albeit most of the profusion
of cracks can only be seen when she's
naked and she's never worried he'll
see those as he has no interest in her
that way, for she's only an old
woman who doesn't even know
where he's headed only that it
might as well be her own heart
steering that wheel, so willing
is she to go along with him
yet again on a ride
that's going nowhere

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-24-17. Yeah, another dream about a man, an actual one in my life. This particular man almost always appears in dreams looking just like he does in life. Which is not usually the case with other men, or women for that matter. And he was clearly his actual self in this dream. My immediate thought on typing that was "he's all too real." BTW, the lengthy string of dreams largely about men that I'd been posting poems about here hasn't been broken. I've just not been writing about them. Some were just too vague or did not compel my interest. Though I'm sure there was a lot of denial active, as well, in keeping my pen from the page on those dreams. For, over the years, vague and even uninteresting dreams have produced poems I've liked with important insights. And on another topic altogether, I'd be very remiss (even in my heart-less state) not to wish everyone a very HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! (I kinda, sorta quietly celebrate a mix of Yule and Winter Solstice.) Photomorph "Looking Up the Chimney" (3-3-10 10002v5f) by Roswila]
